Surrounded by members of the General Assembly, DHSS Secretary Dr. Kara Odom Walker, advocates, students, and health care professionals, Governor John Carney on Tuesday announced his support for Senate Bill 25 – legislation that would raise the legal age for sales of tobacco and vape products from 18 to 21.
The legislation, sponsored by Sen. Bryan Townsend, aims to protect youth in Delaware from the dangers of tobacco use and nicotine addiction. Tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable death and disability in Delaware and the United States, claiming 1,400 lives in Delaware each year, according to federal data. Treatment of tobacco-related illnesses costs Delaware $532 million annually.
"This is really about the children that are here in front of us," Gov. Carney said of the students at the press conference at the Delaware Public Archives. If current tobacco trends continue, the Governor said, about 17,000 Delaware young people under age 18 - who are alive today -- will die prematurely from a tobacco-related illness.
Secretary Walker said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has found that people who smoke have a life expectancy that is 10 years shorter than people who do not smoke. "That's a loss that we can never put a dollar figure on. How do you put a price tag on 3,650 fewer days of life?"

This was only a small section of the loud happy cheering crowd.
The Olympic Torch relay passed through town today. We meesed up our times, and only caught people leaving. It was still fun, as there was such an air of excitement around. The Chinese are very proud that there country is holding the Olymipcs, and they loved the fact that we were carrying their flag, and Tia and her friend were wearing Olymipc t-shirts.
No sign of protest, but the that was alwyas unlikely within China.

Soldiers and Airmen of the Virginia National Guard's Fort Pickett-based 34th Civil Support Team conduct night operations training May 18, 2016, in Lynchburg, Virginia. The mission of the 34th CST is to support first responders in potential biological, chemical, nuclear, radiological and explosive incidents, and the exercise provided an opportunity for the team to train in a limited visibility situation. In the exercise scenario, law enforcement officials discovered a possible terrorist bio lab, and the 34th CST was brought in to assist the locality with the incident. Members of the survey section searched room to room, gathered simulated samples of potential hazardous materials, took photos and then the samples were evaluated by the analytic section in order to provide the incident commander with information about potential hazards.
