The 4th Annual Wrapped in Red Gala and Red Lounge benefiting the American Red Cross was held March 15, 2014 at the Louisville Marriott Downtown. A record 600 guests came together for a fun time supporting Red Cross community disaster programs.

Virginia National Guard Soldiers and Airmen provide weather forecasting and aviation support Feb. 21 for Global Guardian 2012, a joint Army and Air Force exercise held at the Georgia National Guard Combat Readiness Training Center in Savannah. More than 1,300 personnel from 20 different states including flying units, medical units and support units as well as members of the Royal Netherland Air Force and Royal Canadian Air Force participated in the exercise that began Feb. 13 and concludes Feb. 24. Units from the active and reserve Air Force and Army as well as Army and Air National Guard took part in the exercise designed to prepare units to deploy, conduct direct and indirect combat operations and redeploy safely to home base. Airmen from the Sandston-based 200th Weather Flight provided weather forecasting support and Soldiers from the Sandston-based Detachment 1, Company A, 2nd Battalion, 151st Aviation Regiment provided aviation support with Lakota helicopters for reconnaissance, VIP and troop transport and casualty evacuation training. In the Teso region of Uganda, Cordaid and partner organization SOCADIDO support female farmers who struggle to maintain their livelihood because of climate change, land depletion or a lack of tools and agricultural knowledge. Cordaid and SOCADIDO provide seeds, tools, technology and training.
The program started in August 2017 and has been implemented in 9 sub-counties in Teso and supports 9000 farmers in total. The main objectives are threefold: increase food production, reduce post-harvest losses and improve access to finance for the farmers.
Each participating farmer received 2 kilograms of seeds, mainly black-eyed peas, corn and vegetables like cassava and potato, which they plant in a plot of land of about one acre.
All 9000 participating farmers are put into groups of 30. The 300 farming groups are trained on harvest loss reduction, how to organize savings and credit and improve economic activities.
Each sub-county also has a marketing association. That is where the farmers collect their produce reserved for the market after they put aside all they need for their own consumption. The farmers get paid per kilogram of product sold. The association connects the sellers and buyers.
"The problem was that they had a poor bargaining position and often had to sell their products for a bad price", says Tom Edul, Program Coordinator for the Female Farmers Deserve Better program. "As a group, the farmers are much stronger and better equipped to improve their income."
Another vital factor in raising the value of their products is the possibility to save the harvests for a longer time. In some cases, the time of year greatly determines the price of the products. By providing the farmers with special bags, called PICS bags, fruits and vegetables can be saved for months. Now they can wait for the right time to sell and get a much better price.
The successful project is about to end in a few months, but SOCADIDO is eager to extend and expand. Edul: "We really want to continue. The results are great, and we have really made a difference in the lives of these farmers. Our methods of distributing PICS bags, providing tarpaulins for drying the harvest, which increases the quality of the produce, and the implementation of irrigation systems, are unique in this region. The farmers truly appreciate our efforts and they now have the confidence and courage to sell their products on the markets for a reasonable price. They can sustain themselves and even grow their businesses."
Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito joined with state and local officials today for a tour of the Gandara Esperanza Women’s Transitional Support Services Program at Western Massachusetts Hospital, a newly opened 30-bed women’s unit to treat substance use disorder, which has already treated more than 65 women.

To support government’s initiative to improve its national social protection system, the Ministry of Manpower in collaboration with the International Labour Organization (ILO) is conducting a joint National Conference titled “International Experiences of Protection against Unemployment and Its Relevance for Indonesia” today (3/3) in Jakarta.
This National Conference aims to provide technical advice and further assistance on the development of unemployment insurance in the country by presenting experts on unemployment benefits from five Asian countries.
The event is conducted by the ILO through its Unemployment in Indonesia: Quality Assistance for Workers Affected by Labour Adjustment (UNIQLO) Project. Funded by the parent company of UNIQLO, Fast Retailing Co., Ltd, the Project facilitates tripartite dialogues and provide technical assistance to formulate an effective and comprehensive unemployment benefit scheme as a part of social protection system. The Project will run for two years until 2021.

U.S. Army Soldiers from Apache Company, 1-102nd Infantry Regiment (Mountain), Task Force Iron Gray, Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa (CJTF-HOA), conduct a mortar live-fire exercise at the Djiboutian Range Complex, Djibouti, Oct. 17, 2021. The mortarmen practiced accuracy and efficiency on the 81mm and 60mm mortar systems.
The fire support team (FiST) from the 1-101st Field Artillery Regiment (Mountain), Task Force Iron Gray, CJTF-HOA, performed a digital fires mission during the live-fire exercise. Using digital fire methods allow the FiST to transmit rapid and secure information through a small handheld device in order to process an accurate call for fire.
