Thanks to ghostbones for the texture and Billy Idol for the title :-)

One light portrait of myself.

In my attempt to learn from the masters I made portraits inspired by Irving Penn's 'corner portraits'. This portrait was shot in my home studio.

Low key black and white studio portrait.

Strobist: I used to softboxes for this. I set up the large beauty dish at f16 on camera left but found that the shadows on the right side of the face were too dense so I added a smaller softbox to fill in some of the shadows. I don't know what the f stop was after adding the second light, as I just judged it by eye. Not very scientific but it worked okay.

General: This was the first time I worked with a make-up artist. The make-up was brilliant and the in-camera results were far better quality than anything else I've had to date.

A teaching shot at Pavilion Photographic Studio. Clamshell with 48" octa overhead and a 40" soft box from below (1 stop less power than the key).

The next in the 11 year self-portrait series at least until the rain stops and I can get back outside. Of course, it is now the rainy season and it will probably rain most every day for the next four months.

This portrait of Dane Hadley and his best pal Peanut was made one week before he had to reluctantly put her down after 13 years. Portraits are so very important. Never wait until it’s too late to have portraits made to document the relationship. This portrait now hangs in Dane’s home as a 20x24 print, mounted on canvas.

It's competition time again and i've been busy getting my entries finished. Many long hours in front of the computer. I'll be back to Flickr soon.

Hope this one does well. She's Gabrielle, a 12 year old dancer - just lovely. Even at my very best I couldn't make my body do the things she does - and she does it all on her toes!!

Mother is both a potter and a malleable pitcher full to the brim with love and resolve. She’s a pitcher that parts with its form into a fistful of soft clay that she moulds for years and years together to make it become the son every mother would want to have.
