Behold the lowly mayfly :-)
"Mayflies can be confused with stoneflies, caddis flies and lacewings; however, mayflies have short antennae which the others do not."
I found the above quote, and lots of other fascinating info at a wonderful website called Wild About Gardens.

In this photo, we see my good friend, Josh Boutros modelling in my studio. Instead of doing a simple headshot or standing portrait we were trying to change things up by giving him something to use, in this case, the collapsible chair.
The technical aspects of this photo are definitely the studio setup, settings and editing that went into the photo. For the studio setup, I had a black backdrop behind the model with a 135W light in a softbox to the left of the camera. Having the light to the left of the camera created the loop shadow on the model's nose.
I used my 40mm lens with my aperture wide open at f/2.8, I set my shutter speed to 1/100 and my ISO to 200. I found that having the aperture at f/2.8 gave a much more shallow feel to the image because only the closer parts of the model were in focus such as the face and hands. I set my ISO to 200 so that I could keep my shutter speed at a decently quick time to eliminate any blur my model may cause by moving slightly.
Once we were finished with the shooting portion of the photo I imported the photo into Lightroom where I brought down the highlights, lifted the shadows and desaturated the image to about -70%. I used the brush select tool to select the highlights on his face and bring up the exposure, I then did the opposite with the shadows on his face, I selected them and brought the exposure down do darken them creating more contrast. after adjusting a few more sliders such as sharpen, whites, blacks, and select colours, I added two gradient filters on the left and right of the model bringing the exposure down around -1.10 to darken the background so you were not able to see any of the backdrop.
The dominant compositional aspect of this photo is the model's face, chest and arms. Josh's face, chest and arms are all highlighted and in focus. The white shirt that he is wearing stands out on the black backdrop making the model pop even with the desaturated look.
This photo really shows the more serious side of Josh. He is all around a really fun friendly guy, but there is always going to be a serious side to someone and this photo brings that out in him.
I have really enjoyed taken portraits over the course of the semester to the point where I set up my own studio in my basement. I really like this photo because I think I was able to capture Josh in a different way than the other portraits I took of my friends. Most of the other photos generally looked the same, they were MS and MCU shots of the model standing with their arms down or crossed. With this photo of Josh, we used a chair and I captured more of him in the photo which I thought stood out over the other portraits.
Byron, De Wildt's Ambassador.
I photographed him last year at TUT's studio.
He is a wonderful model to work.

I had the privilege of shooting some images of double-neck guitarist Ian Ethan Case after his performance Saturday night at Studio 99
For most of the images I wanted a "street lamp" style look, so I had the Fabulous Sara hold a gridded strobe directly over Ian's head in the studio. I think these images look pretty sharp.
Big thanks to Ian for sticking with us past Midnight and letting us take some portraits!
