177 East Hastings Street, Vancouver, BC.
Description of Historic Place:
The Washington Hotel, located at 177 East Hastings Street in Vancouver, is a masonry eight-storey Edwardian commercial structure adjacent to an alley.
Heritage Value:
The heritage value of the Washington Hotel lies in the historic relationship between this area and the economy of early Vancouver. At the turn of the twentieth century, this area of town was developed as a shopping area as commercial activity spread outward from its early roots in Gastown. As the young city grew, so did its commercial district. It was the home of several hotels, lodgings, and small retail outlets which were established to serve the growing blue-collar population.
Built in 1912 for James Borland by architects Parr and Fee, who designed many early Vancouver buildings, this building was first known as the Hotel Maple until 1935. The hotel's name changed to the Hastings Hotel in the 1930s and finally the Washington Hotel in the 1940s. Borland was a pioneer who arrived in Vancouver in 1888 and later became a well-known building agent. The hotel's fine finishes would indicate that it catered to tourists and business travellers who were expected after the completion of the Canadian Northern Railway and the Panama Canal. In addition to providing accommodation, the Hotel Maple also offered services including a pool room, a gentleman's clothing outlet, and a restaurant, all catering to the largely male travelling public. The real estate agency on the main floor was well-placed to deal with the boom which mirrored the city's economic prosperity.
There is also value in the architectural design, which reflects the changing public taste from the ornate decoration of the late Victorian period to the more refined ornament of the Edwardian era. The symmetrical front facade and the overhanging cornice on two facades are similar to other hotels and office buildings in the area. This tall building overshadows its neighbour, illustrating the 'sawtooth' skyline prevalent in the Hastings Street strip.

The Vasai Fort was established by the Portuguese as the headquarters of their Indian operations in 1534 and centre of their operations until 1739...The Portuguese buildings inside the fort are in ruins, although there are enough standing walls to give a good idea of the floor plans of these structures....was just a timeless beauty for me !

This amazing glass couture piece Structures of Self was recently modeled by one of the collaborating artists during the new Beakerhead festival of science, art and engineering. The idea to collaborate on an a photoshoot that paired the alien/bug like garment with the 40 foot RayGun Gothic Rocketship during the setting sun, made for some pretty creative images

CHATSWORTH - At 9:53PM on December 16, 2020 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to 20150 W Sunburst St for a reported structure fire.
The first arriving fire companies found a one story, commercial building with fire through the roof and requested additional resources. The 28,556 square foot building, built in 1981, was well involved in fire and a decision was quickly made to transition to a defensive mode.
Truck companies put ladder pipes into operation and firefighters used large diameter hand lines to hit the target from all sides. Crews successfully defended the adjacent structures from sustaining damage.
Ultimately, over 120 firefighters working under the leadership of Assistant Chief Corey Rose achieved a knockdown in one hour and thirty-four minutes. One firefighter was transported to the hospital with serious but non-life threatening burn injuries.
The concrete, tilt-up building sustained heavy damage, to include roof collapse, which left it dangerously vulnerable to further collapse of the walls. Consequently, the Department of Building and Safety red-tagged the structure for safety purposes. Overhaul operations and cause investigation were held off until morning while fire companies remained on scene in a fire watch. The RS3 Robotic Firefighting Vehicle was also on scene to assist with interior operations if needed through the night.

Porta Nigra is the oldest defensive structure in Germany erected in the 2nd century AD when the newly conquered Roman city was surrounded by walls. The Porta Nigra is the only one of the four gates that still stands in Trier. The others were pillaged for their stone and iron. It survived because it was used as a humble residence of a hermit monk called Simeon for 7 years and in the 12th century the structure was made into a church - St Simeon). Napoleon destroyed the church in 1803 but the 12th century apse survived. The entire structure is made without mortar and the sandstone blocks are connected by iron rods. It is called Porta Nigra because of it's weathered bricks.

HDR image. Only triangle castle structure in Germany. This place has a very long history, it was used during second world war as an assembly place by the nazi organisation "SS". It was meant to be their "center of the world". Next to it was a small concentration camp. When the war was lost they even tried to destroy it completely by blowing it up. Today it is used as museum and as a youth hostel.
