This amazing glass couture piece Structures of Self was recently modeled by one of the collaborating artists during the new Beakerhead festival of science, art and engineering. The idea to collaborate on an a photoshoot that paired the alien/bug like garment with the 40 foot RayGun Gothic Rocketship during the setting sun, made for some pretty creative images

A stone wall in West Yorkshire shows the results of the errosive power of the local weather. Yorkshire sandstone is useful because it can be very easily worked, but its layered structure and crumbly consistency means that it suffers from wind and rain, even coming away in sheets when ice forces it apart.

Mudcracks are diagnostic sedimentary structures indicating subaerial exposure of sediment surfaces, with alternating wet & dry conditions. They are much more common that raindrop imprints, which indicate the same environmental setting. Mudcracks are most likely to occur in fine-grained siliciclastic sediments, fine-grained carbonate sediments, and in some evaporitic settings.

Mudcracks are distinctive and easy to identify, but they do vary in appearance. The cracks themselves vary in width, depth, and areal density. Mudcrack polygons also vary in size & shape.
