Leadenhall Building - The Cheesegrater - London UK - Architects Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners - 2010-2014

The Leadenhall building, with a height of 224 metres, is the tallest office block in the City of London. It is best known for its tapered profile that pulls back to respect views of St Paul's Cathedral, and which also earned it its nickname. The Leadenhall was designed by Richard Rogers' firm for a site beside the architect's celebrated Lloyds Building and, like that structure, the tower expresses its entire framework on the exterior. The building's visible framework is made up of a series of constituent parts. Instead of a structural core, a full-perimeter structure, known as a braced tube, defines the edges of each office floor plate to give the facade its most visible element. These elements break the building down into seven-storey modules. Other distinguishable features include the ladder frames that enclose the fire-fighting cores and a circulation tower that runs up the northern side of the building. The triple-glazed facades make use of 70,000 square metres of glass. Blinds were installed in the cavity between the two inner layers of glazing, and these adjust automatically to protect the interiors from glare and overheating. Every floor inside the building is rectangular, getting gradually smaller towards the top. This allows for flexible internal layouts. The base of the tower features a seven-storey-high public space filled with shops and restaurants. It will feature a pocket park on one side, a public exhibition area and a thoroughfare running north to south. The ground level public space, which includes escalators offering direct access into the building itself, is one of the largest reception areas the City has ever seen. At once generous and welcoming, it offers a seamless transition from the street into the building, and makes a positive contribution to the life of the City; creating a major new hub and meeting place for people living and working in the Square Mile.

Day five ... our last day there. A day of wandering.

The Torre de Gas Natural ...

The last building designed by Miralles & Benedetta Tagliabue EMBT in Barcelona, this office tower—the headquarters of the national Catalan gas company—makes an impressive mark on the city’s skyline and faces the sea.

The building is usually called ‘The Gas Tower’ but, as with most Miralles projects, it has very little to do with prototypical, corporate aesthetics, or even what one would typically conceive of as a tower. Clad in different colored glass panels, the building confounds onlookers, as there’s no discernible main axis or single perspective from which to regard its geometry.

Call it “form follows urbanism”: the building stands at the crossroads between the modern Olympic Village and the traditional maritime neighborhood of La Barceloneta.

The result is something beyond a simple ‘tower’; the architecture relates no less than a new concept of space and the last (and one of the most celebrated) of Miralles’ masterworks.

Junteenth Celebration by Freedom March NYC, Brooklyn

On February 17, 2012 I drove to Parrish, Florida to record the Placement of the Orange Blossom Special Steam Locomotive, on the track at the Florida Railroad Museum in Parrish, Florida. This Photo shows the Steam Engine being moved close to the track by R.E. Johnson & Sons, Structural Movers. Notice the Dollies beneath the Cradle holding the Locomotive.

I wasn't able to get photos of the Locomotive in route because of delays the Rigging Company had in getting government approval from the Florida DOT regarding Permits and approvals for the Route (which particular roads) to be taken between Orlando and Parrish. I couldn't keep track of all of the reschedules of the delivery and consequently missed the opportunity to photograph the move itself. During the delay, the Locomotive and Tender were stored in the Old Amway Arena Parking Lot on the Northwest Side of Interstate Route 4 in Downtown Orlando prior to the movement to Parrish.

I like how in France old buildings aren't over restored and made picturesque. Not a wisteria or hanging basket with geraniums, or self congratulatory car in sight. In Surrey it's sometimes difficult to imagine you're in something that used to be a village

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. Designed and Fabricated Structural Pipe Hangers with Megalug® Pipe Attachments.

These are carbon steel structural supports designed for 6", 10" and 12" ductile iron pipe. They are hot dip galvanized to protect against corrosion and will be used in conjunction with hydraulic snubbers. The hydraulic snubbers are used to protect against axial shock loading, as well as providing vertical weight support.

Each support utilizes a Megalug pipe attachment to eliminate the need for field welding. The Megalug® attachments are designed to "bite" into the sides of the pipe providing an attachment point for the flanges on the fabricated clamp.

The 6" supports are designed for a maximum vertical load of 3,770 pounds, while the 10" and 12" supports are designed for a maximum vertical load of 11,630 pounds. All of the supports are built for an overall height of 55-1/8" from the upper support steel to pipe centerline.
