The seventeenth of May is constitution day in Norway. The celebration is also a celebration of spring, for many, and the tradition is that also the graduates from high school finnishes their 3-4 week long celebration of gradating. Curiously, this graduation-party - known as the "russefeiring" - takes place prior to graduating, and the graduates - known as "russ" - are knwon to suffer academically from this unfortunate tradition. What has happened, is that over the years, the finals have been moved from early May to June, but the habit of celebrating during the weeks culminating in May 17th has been hard to kick.
Anyway, I was out and about on this wonderful day when I ran into Johan and Mikkel (Stranger #39). They were catching their breath outside a waterholde (see in comment below), where I was waiting outside for one in my party. I asked them for a stranger shot, and they were to tired to object I suppose - 4 weeks of partying takes it toll.We chatted a bit about their celebration, got their happy and care-free faces on the chip, and continued the day.

Right after stranger 4 we being rejected 2 times so total of rejection so far 3 rejections. After being rejected two times we decided to go Bukit Bintang to find other strangers. On the way to LRT we met this guy. Tōnis from Astonia and he is very friendly =). I was glad he not rejected us, if not it will be the third rejection in a row! Thank you Tōnis

I got the landlord to replace one of the locks to the front door of my flat. I was given only one key and as I share this place I had to get another cut. I asked at one of the hardware stalls at the morning market if anyone there cut keys. 'No, you have to go to Chulia Street or Pulau Tikus. But they might be closed until after Chinese New Year.'
I'd seen the one in Pulau Tikus before, working on the street, but each time I drove down Burma Road now there was no sign of him. I decided to leave it until I returned from my Australian trip.
Back in Penang I managed to get a parking spot opposite his stall. I had a small child with me and had to cross a busy road. He was getting ready to leave on his three-wheeled scooter. I signalled for him to wait and he did.
Got the key cut and we chatted. Jason was wearing a t-shirt that looked like a team shirt for a Myanmar sporting team. I asked if he was Burmese. 'No,' he said. 'We exchange shirts with members from other teams.' Jason was an athlete who swam for the Malaysian team in the Asian paralympics. He says he retired from swimming because in Malaysia success is not based on ability. 'You mean on who you know?' I asked. He nodded agreement.
I told him about the 100 Strangers project and he was happy to participate. Small dilemma for me. I only had my TZ10 pocket camera with me. My G2 was in the car but I didn't want to keep him waiting while I crossed the road twice with this child so I decided to go with the TZ10. Perhaps it's not as good a shot as I would have got otherwise but never-the-less, here is Jason.

Yes, I gave Rick some strange sprouting horns in this pic and certainly needed better light! I was drawn to take his photo by his curious t-shirt, which I at first thought to be a movie reference. No! That is actually Mao Zedong on the right and Chiang Kai Shek on the left, the once dueling leaders of Chinese politics. Rick was at an Austin, Texas, toy store with his family. He didn't offer much more of his personal story.

Next to "Tuesday Twenty," 100 Strangers has been my favorite project. I am terrified every time I ask but the reward of a yes is worth it. I will forever be in debt to Antonio - Stranger #1 - for saying yes when I was about to give up.
I absolutely love the stories and how willing people are to participate. We really are amazingly open and social.

Tina is from Nimbin, Australia.
Tina served me a delicious coconut ice cream and before I knew it I was telling her about the project.
'Ice cream lady' is only a part time gig for Tina. She's actually very passionate about health and healing. One day per week she works in Lismore providing therapies such as massage (she highly recommends the Kahuna massage) and reiki.
I wish I had a more colourful background to compliment Tina's playful personality.

Enid was standing outside an entrance off Sloane Street. She find it hard to describe how she reacted when I asked if I might take her picture but I didn't get the impression that she thought I was all there. But she did agree and I got the shot!
I was about to ask her to move to get some background going when I realised that the backdrop where she was standing would have a good effect so I didn't change anything.
I really like this picture, Enid has a certain something that I can't put my finger on but which I really really like.

Carrie served us the legendary enchiladas at the Dart Bowl Steak House inside one of Austin's oldest bowling alleys. When I was a kid it was called Capitol Bowl, but they moved the name and the restaurant food over when the original Dart Bowl a few miles away closed down and, I believe, became a car lot. As good as the enchilada are, the homemade toast served with them is even better.
A little blur here, but I liked the smile and what she was doing with her hands.

Ty is my first stranger. I met him at a bar in Minneapolis and we got to talking about being left handed. Awesome. He was really tall, so I wanted to get a shot of him from down low. I'm actually squatting o he floor for this image. Sadly the lighting in the bar was very low - next time I'll bring a flash!

Joaquin was slack lining along with Guillo, my last stranger who I met in a park in Paris.
Joaquin is from Ecuador and met Joaquin there while Guillo was travelling through. They obviously became good friends, enough to travel around Europe and catch up with each other!
Joaquin is studying architecture in Paris and is a photography fan as well. He liked the vintage glass on my M9, it's like a camera fan magnet!
My 45th stranger is a motorcyclist from Brecon in Wales. I stopped and asked to take a picture for my 100 strangers and he agreed. We discussed motor-bikes as I rode them from 16 - 60 years. When I asked his name he said everyone calls him Arc-i which is adapted from arc eye. This is a condition welders get called Photokeratitis. He was a retired welder.

Antonio Bridle Lane Soho London.
Antonio was my 4th stranger today so it was a good stranger day. He is a chef and was on a break sitting behind the restaurant he works in Bob Bob Ricard. He was really friendly and we had a good chat, he is from Portugal and his sister is a model.

How cool is this - That Busker I photographed way back #11 - he was asked to illustrate Waterstones front window coz he was soooo good etc ..
Blow me down with a feather - in the pub last night , a lady came up to me and said hey - that busker you photographed in Bath has made national news !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My story was absolutely true .. He was on BBC News .. all about what happened .. I captured him on the very day he got spotted and asked by the head of Waterstones - Window displays ... I will have to go back now !!

Best word to describe his day: Electrophysiology
As the subway was coming, I made this one quick: he said that he had a pretty weird day at the job today because of what happened with a patient. So he had this girl come to him for a treatment and as she got close, she undressed and showed her her new fake breasts and she seemed pretty proud about that. But since he's a professional he asked her to put back her clothes and that she didn't need to undress for that treatment anyway. I told him that it sounded like a great day to me, but he then reminded me that most of his patients are over 50 years old. He said that when she left she was pretty pissed but it was part of the job!

I've been planning to try myself on backlight for quite a while, and today I got lucky. Found a nice small patch of light shining into an otherwise shady street. After taking a few self portraits to get the flash exposure right, I started to look for a suitable subject. Being in Camden I didn't have to wait too long.
The framing is again a bit tighter than I would have liked. I was trying to get the flash as close to her face as possible to get as soft light as possible. Holding it at arms reach that basically fixed my position (I guess I'll get myself a softbox for Christmas). Given that I didn't feel like I could move freely I tried myself on focusing and recomposing again. I think the focus is not 100% spot on, but I didn't see it when controlling on the camera LCD.
Normally, I probably would have crop this to square format to get rid of the guy in the background. (Camden is full of interesting strangers, but getting a clean background is a bit of a pain. He's on the other side of the street...) But I was planning to get some consistency for the last 10 shots of my set, so landscape format it is...

When I saw them walking in the marketplace I liked the contrasts in the way they dressed. I asked whether it was OK to make some photos. I was answered positively.
The two friends are university students in Tel Aviv--Arabic and Islam for the third year. They will work as teachers once they've graduated.
Marah, whose name literally means feast, is 21 y/o originally from Nazareth. She is studying also Hebrew literature.
Needless to say her Hebrew was fluent, but I enjoyed exchanging some words in Arabic, too.
Saja's name means quiet. She's 23 y/o and from the village Taybeh.
I wondered about their different ways of dressing - they said it was up to each one to dress as she wanted.
Their friendship doesn't depend on the way they dress.
It was a fun encounter and the girls liked the photos they saw on my camera display.

"I am an Arab, Muslim girl, born in Nazareth in 1995.
I study Arabic and Hebrew Literature at Tel Aviv university, it's my last year.
I work as teacher in a Jewish school, teaching spoken Arabic.
In my free time I like to read books, I like sport and dancing, too.
I see my message to the world in myself. My life is my message to the world so that's why I'm trying to make it inspiring. I volunteer in feminist associations so I got a feminist message to a conservative society. The Arab girl has to be her own self to live in the way that she likes to dress how she likes but the most important thing is to be independent, to be her own self with no one controlling her life and mind. I think we should meet and drink coffee to talk more about this point.
My message to the younger me and the younger than me: be curious. Try new things. Strive for something that stretches you. Of course, there’s a limit to this, so be careful !"
More often than not, for some reason, I tend to approach artists, or people who are interested in art, and ask to make their portraits.
Antti was walking with his dog on the bridge over Tölö Bay when I said: "Hello, would you mind posing for me?" I told him about my project and asked what he was doing in life.
Antti studies aesthetics in the University of Helsinki with an emphasis on ... guess what? Yes, photography!
Couldn't have chosen any better, right :-)
Saima is 5 y/o. I asked Antti to lift her for the photo, he did, but the doggie wasn't really interested in posing, obviously ;-)

Stranger portrait - Mike is a well known busker on Stephen Ave, Calgary. He's often heard belting out Pink Floyd songs and is a regular singer around the downtown core

Yesterday I met Olga at Starbucks. I was really nervous about asking her permission to take the photo. She grabbed my atention when she was reading a newspaper. I don´t know if she was sad or just busy, but she caught my atention. She didn´t talk much but I thank her for being my second stranger.
On the other hand, I was so nervous that I didn´t put so much atention to the lighting. Annyways, I wasn´t so shure about uploading this one but I wanted to share it either way.
Later that day at the same place I met two ladies and I took some pictures too but I´ll upload them later.

Ella es Olga, mi extraña 02. Estaba muy nerviosa cuando le pedí permiso para tomarle una fotografía. Me llamó la atención porque estaba leyendo el periódico con mucha atención y seriedad. Parecía sentir cada noticia e incluso me pareció algo triste.

I saw this guy with his car at Ashby Folville Classic car/bike monthly meet.
Seeing his car (a DeLorean) I had to get his photo for my 100 Strangers and more details about the car he had.
Pulling him away from a photo from his friends I explained why I wanted his pic, gave him a moo card and told him all about the 100SP.
Mark from Melton Mowbray and a CDT teacher at Saw Valley Collage. He has an interest in design and having a DeLorean is a bit of a project for him after only just buying the car in December 2012. It's imported from the USA and gave him stress getting over to the UK. Mark for it for sale on Ebay and then did all the research on the car to make sure it's everything he was told it was.
Once the deal was done, it was a case of sorting the import duty out to get it to the UK. Because of the terrible storms America had last year the car nearly didn't get here. Getting slightly damaged whilst waiting to be shipped.
Mark told me he's always wanted a DeLorean but the cost of them in the UK is so expensive. Importing one from the USA that needs a bit of work was a cheaper option for him.
The nice thing Mark is going to do is once the car is all sorted he'll use it to raise money for Parkinsons Disease.
So much more was told to me about the car etc but I may bore people about DeLorean's lol
I hope Mark likes the photo's I've taken, he said he'll look in on the project to see how they turned out.

Stranger 001 (99 To Go)
I've finally done it!
After many months of telling myself I really wanted to give this project a go, I've actually taken my first stranger portrait.
However, in my excitement, I completely forgot to ask the obvious question, so although I think he looks like a Steve or a Dave, I have no idea what his name is. (Doh!)
What I can tell you is that he with no name works for the Bristol Ferry Boat Company, ferrying locals and tourists around the harbour, to various points in Bristol.
When asked where he'd recommend to try in Bristol (I'm a local, but figure it never hurts to ask others for inspiration) he suggested the Grain Barge, which is an old converted barge that's been renovated and is now a thriving bar.
His only concern with posing for a picture was that he didn't want his boss to think he was skiving if he ever saw it on the internet. Well, if you're reading this Mr Ferry Boss, I can honestly say that my ferry trip was made all the more enjoyable by such friendly staff.
So thank you stranger, and bring on the next 99!

This is Jorge. He wouldn't tell me his last name. I met him while he was living in a homeless encampment in Tijuana, BC, Mexico, not far from the notorious "El Bordo" region.
I asked if I could take his photo because I thought he had the best face. He said sure, for $2 so he could go get a meal.
Meet Barb. She works the festival trail in her Lemonade stand. Hailing from Cornwall she, her husband, and her son work the summer circuit of festivals and fairs. They have a trailer for over nighting. She loves the life style and was cheerful willing to tell me all about it. After indulging me with her time and a couple of photos I purchased a couple of slushie drinks for the kids and went on my way. Thanks Barb. This is Lilly! I met her last week and again this week when I visited the Saturday Market. She has two very young siblings who hang out with their mom, playing music and doing what they can for extra money. She, herself, has a bongo that she plays alongside the older drummers. I got worried about her today because she was dressed in summer clothes and it is still chilly outside.
She is a friendly and sweet child and she laughs when I come near her to snap photos. She tried to trick me today by not telling me her name and then laughing when I guessed everything under the sun but Lilly.
Today was such a great day, the weather was beautiful and I had so much fun! And meeting Dave just added to this special day.
I met Dave in a restaurant, McSeagull's in Boothbay Harbor, where I was also having a delicious brunch. I had just finished a morning of shopping and photographing other people while they shopped in Boothbay Harbor as well.
You might be saying to yourself that it looks like Dave is wearing his pajamas, and if you did, you would be right. In fact, everyone in Boothbay Harbor was wearing their pajamas today, because today was a special day to go shopping in your PJ's. There were incredible deals to be had for everyone who shopped in their PJ's, and who doesn't like a bargain!
Dave may not have done much shopping himself this day, but he certainly made all the hungry shoppers feel very much at home. Not only did he join us in wearing his PJ's, he softly played a wide range of classic (rock) songs, while we ate our brunch.
Thank you Dave for making our breakfast all the more enjoyable, and thank you for being my 66th stranger.

I was about to head of when I saw a very stylish couple approaching (also see stranger n# 90). They were a bit in a rush, but still obliged to having their portraits taken. We initially also wanted to take a shot with both of them in it, but forgot in the rush. Once again, I also forgot to ask them for their names...
There was some fairly nice open shade, and given that she was wearing glasses I decided to not use flash. Seeing how it helped with my next stranger, I wish I had. So I ended up brightening her up using an adjustment brush and playing around with the tone curve...

Ms. Sutherland - initially began stripping off her bluetooth headset, glasses etc. for the portrait but I told her she didn't need to pose or anything. She took me at my word and went back to work. It was a shame not to get her eyes but I did say not to pose and I didn't want to go disturb her further.

Meet Mike. Mike was showing his paintings at the Gray's School of Art Degree Show 2012 in Aberdeen. Mike has just graduated and is working towards his next RSA exhibition in Edinburgh in April 2013.
Mike's paintings were superb and he had already sold half of them after less than one day. He also works at Transition Extreme in Aberdeen as he is into boarding.

13 minutes @ 20 degrees
I always say that i'm doing this project to develop both my photography skills and my social skills. 17 strangers into this project and I have, for so many times, messed up on my exposure, my composition, etc. And so it was only going to be a matter of time when i'm going to mess up on how i would deal and engage my stranger socially.
This encounter would be that first time.
Whitney normally wears eyeglasses and when i took my first shots, the glare on her glasses was very strong. I wanted to ask her if she can take off her eyeglasses but i hesitated because i thought that the portrait i will be taking will not be a true reflection of her usual everyday look, but she says its ok because at times she would wear contacts too.
And so when she did took her glasses off, lo and behold i saw a different face. Her face looks brighter and more vibrant, and her eyes were really pretty. BUT, for some reason i saw a disturbed reaction on her face when i told her what i saw. I couldn't remember the exact words that i said, but i must've said something bad about how she looks with her glasses on =( And i could sense in her a bit of insecurity with her looks.
But being the nice person that Whitney is, she still sat down with me after that and talked about her moving to Pennsylvania in a couple of days to start her graduate studies in Cultural Geography. She says she's working on a paper to talk about the housing market in Stockton and the foreclosures and how it affects the people and the society as a whole down there.
She talked about dancing with her friends on occassion and how she's going to miss everybody when she moves. I kind of able to relate to that being one who've moved here in the U.S. a few years back and have to leave everybody from back home. I told her she would be just fine and i wished her luck. And if Whitney's reading this, i'm really sorry if i said somethin bad about how you look with your eyeglasses. I didn't mean that, and i had all good intentions of telling you that you're a beautiful person, with or without your eyeglasses =)

Strange but true ... he stopped me, asking information about my bike! And, of course, I gave him but in the end I said ... now you have to pay a little fine ... and I started to talk about the project. :-) Nice guy, half american half italian, met him in Trastevere, his name is G.B. that are just the initials of his complete name but he explained me in the U.S they use more often just the initials than we do here in Italy.

I gathered my courage and stopped this lady in Canterbury who was with her family. She kindly agreed to let me take her photo. I just loved her hat and its jaunty, fun angle and thought she would make a great photo. I think I was right - am really pleased with this shot.
I didn't have any cards with me to give her, as we had intended to go out taking landscape shots today but ended up in Canterbury. Her son took my Flickr details down though so, if they are looking, I hope they are happy with this shot. Also took another and included that in my photostream.
I am getting better at asking people, but still tend to rush the photos. I feel uncomfortable asking them to change their pose or perhaps move to a better position etc. I feel I am already disturbing them so I should get on with it, quick! Hopefully it will get easier with time.

There is a place in Savannah where a person can pull up in a pickup truck and hire people by the hour to help you do what ever you need need help with. This is where I met Tom, who cautioned me to watch the puddle in the street and let me take his photograph.

For the first 32 entries in this project, I used a Canon EOS-1 body. I took a little break from the project but I intend to continue it. I've decided to pick it back up again and this time I'm going to use a Mamiya C220 TLR Medium Format body with a 80mm f/2.8 lens. I'm still using the Ilford Delta 100 film, and now doing 120. I'm shooting 3 shots per person in case of blinks, etc and no digital. I know that was interesting for folks comparing the film to digital, so sorry for not continuing that. For additional details on this project for me, see my blog post. The lag in time between when I shot this and posted it is that I had to finish the roll of film, get it processed, scanned, etc.
I met Hannah today after I shot my 33'd person, Kathleen. I was walking back to work and wasn't going to do another shot, but Hannah stopped me and was handing out flyers for a talk being given entitled "Bible, Fact or Fiction?". I stopped and chatted with her for a while and ended up asking her if she'd like to be in the project. She agreed and didn't give me an email address, but I did get her a business card so I hope she can find her image.
I shot 3 images of Hannah and using a light meter went with 1/60 f/4.0.

Development Notes - Processed on Tuesday Sept 24 using XTOL 1:1, 10:30. Very overexposed and it's amazing how much detail remained regardless. I used my light meter and set for those values, so I need to make sure that it was on the correct settings. Other shots from this roll where i used my digital to help me figure out exposure looked fine.

That one was pretty funny. While i was trying to psych myself into going to open a set of girls on a mall bench that guy saw me act weird (i was doing my weird-psych-dance-NLP-move, which does look stupid, lol) so we started talking and got see his shop which i thought was pretty cool since he was selling sunglasses and i was looking to buy those classic Rayban Aviator sunglasses and they had them in stock. So i started looking around and didn't find exactly the one i was looking for but while i was there, i told him about the project and if he wanted to be part of it and he agreed. I then asked him about his word, which was “house” since it was written in big letters in front of him.
Tell me the 1rst FUN anecdote or story that comes to your mind and that happened to you lately: So last Friday he left a local bar, called “Foufounes Électriques” and while in the city bus, he and his friend started talking to another guy who was spanish and they asked him to speed teach them a couple of words. But since they were pretty drunk, the only spanish word he remembered was “Cerveza”.
After his story, I told him a great way to meet people and learn other languages/cultures is to get on couchsurfer.org and get ppl from different countries at his home to stop, chat, exchange and learn and he loved the ideas.

Raj was the leader of the group that were painting murals outside their youth club. I explained the project to him and he thought it was a great idea. Once I'd finished taking his picture he drummed up volunteers from the rest of the group. Thanks Raj, hope you like the pictures.

This is Mike. I was waiting in the quiet summer streets of Oslo for some friends, leaning up against a wall playing word feud on my cellular, when Mike came along. I was half waiting for a Stranger, and mistook Mike for a tourist (I'm sorry Mike), with his Aisan appearance and packing a camera like me. I guess lots of people think I'm a tourist to quite often. Anyways, Mike is my Stranger #51, and I had already decided to try to have a series of 10 strangers done at around 20mm focal length. I had my 10-22mm mounted after trying to photograph the - now stripped down after last year's bombing (see photo in comment) - government building, and decided to try one at it's maximal aperture 4.5@22mm.
Mike was easy to ask, and easy to chat to, and we got along fairly well, considering he packs a Nikon and I pack a Canon. I explained about the project, and I had him pose in the middle of the deserted street. In fact Mike is a fellow Flickerite, and was out chasing his shot for some 365-project; I cannot remember exactly which it was.

My first stranger portrait.
This lady works at the gas station where I buy the poisonous energy drinks I need to stay awake. I had seen her before but not spoken to her. This was my first try so I didn't do a lot of talking, just asked permission and took the photo.

Scott (yes, that's Mr. "Saintbridge" here on flickr were waiting to meet up w/ the gorgeous Grace at a coffee shop in Roanoke, when i met my newest stranger.
Shaun was sitting at the table next to us w/ his sketch book. He actually spoke to us first. He noticed the cameras and asked us if we argue who's is better (nikon vs. canon). Scott had a ridiculous comeback (if you can imagine that) and we chatted for a bit about photography, cameras, etc.
I finally got up the guts to explain my stranger project and ask him if he'd be a stranger. He agreed.
I shot more pics than i've EVER shot of a stranger. It seemed much easier knowing that he was into photography as well. He was quite the "ham" for the camera. Very funny.
So. Here you have Shaun. I hope spelled that correctly. He might be emailing me some more info about himself, so come back and visit.

This is Stunt Monkey.
Heading towards me on his little bike (his monkey bike) I had to stop him for a photo.
Along with his two keepers, I explained my Strangers photo challenge and asked if he would take part.
