I saw a couple not far from where I'd parked my car.. while waiting for them both to finish what they were doing.. I played out my introduction in my head.. and grabbed out one of my business cards.
They started walking away from the shops so I quickened my pace to catch up with them...
As I got close enough, I politely called out to them "Excuse me... Hi Hello. I'm Kylie. I have a ridiculously unusual request to ask you.. I've started a personal project of photographing 100 Strangers.. to help me improve and strengthen on my social and technical photographic skills.. Please would it be ok if I photographed you both?".
The couple spoke with one another... and the guys partner told him she didn't want their photo taken... which was such a great disappointment.. this woman was stunning! Gorgeous brown skin, Afro corn braids all the way down to her back.. and he had dreadlocks.. most of which were hidden under his cap...
But then her partner turned to me..hesitantly agreed and said he would allow me to photograph him..
YAYEEEEEE.. I was adamant moments before i would have to chalk this one off as another rejection.
I was composing a picture in a shopping arcade in Cardiff when this gentleman came into frame with his bicycle. He posed and laughed. I then suggested he pose again and we started a conversation. I mentioned that I liked taking street portraits and told him about the 100 strangers project. I asked if he lived in Cardiff and he said he was from the valleys north of Cardiff. I also asked him if he watched the rugby match Wales v England the day before. He said he was out mountain walking at the time and I said I used to do a lot of mountain walking and mountain biking.
Mike said he was happy about me posting his picture and we chatted some more about photography and flickr.

This is Anna. She’s a friend of Steph (Stranger 5). She’s from Cambridge too and is a hair dresser. Thanks for being my 6th Stranger!
Things I need to work on:
1. Not being afraid to take several shots of several different poses (if the strangers don’t mind of course!)
2. Thinking more about the back ground
3. Not rushing the shots

Meet Lindsay. Lindsay is a first year Psychology student at Huston Baptist College in Texas. After speaking with her for a few minutes it was clear that Lindsay is a bright, driven, young lady destined to succeed.
Lindsay was home, visiting family for the holidays, when I had the pleasure of meeting her. I was out and about walking with my camera in hand when I saw her. She had such an inviting demeanor that I just couldn't pass up the chance of asking her to part take in my 100 Stranger Project. After explaining the project to Lindsay she agreed and allowed me to create her portrait.

Tom and I exchanged nods as I was heading out the door of the burger place where I'd been camped with my son while we waited for his appointment nearby in Georgetown, Texas. I instantly knew I couldn't pass up Tom's distinctive look and turned back to ask him to participate in the project. He was soft-spoken but told me his is retired and tries to take it easy.

After shooting the cat pictures, I roamed around the neighbourhood. I asked him if I could take a picture, and after I did, we talked a bit. It started raining shortly after so I had to leave, but it was a nice talk.

At last in ways( Computer down - on a borrowed one ! been two weeks ( in fact a month since my # ) I now understand if you leave it to long it gets harder and harder ! Thanks to you guys , got of my backside tonight and was not coming home unless a stranger was found ! Your comments and wishes spurred me on esp over the weekend - tried to hard I expect , comments do help so much ... in fact got #63 # 64 so back on role , once the minute I started I was away .. Once I relaxed and went with the flow it was fine back to normal.
Can I introduce you to Amy ... Amy was with her friends in Starbucks , sure they found it strange , a guy coming in to ask for A PHOTO but she was up for the photo , the blue hair was the deciding factor plus her lovely fresh smile .. we popped outside , the background suited her .. Amy is a hairdresser in the town plus part-time model. She spends time with friends and part of a groupie to a band ! They were really nice group of people ... Thanks to all and suggesting Amy ... I saw Rolland reading in the park, comfortably sitting in his chair with a nice hat, so I decided to approach him:
“Do you have an anecdote, a story or an accomplishment that you'd like to share?”
“Hummm nothing.... Nothing really comes to mind...”
“Well ok, you're reading something... What is it about?”
“It's a story about a girl learning to live on her own in nature, and hunting and fishing to feed herself. Its happening in Michigan in the 70s.”
“Why did you pick this book?”
“I read a lot, I actually love to read. And I also love nature.”
“What's your favorite book?”
“Ohhh god, you're asking me something... There are so many good books.... I read biographies, books about history, war, nature, I also read fiction, etc.”
“Good! Because I absolutely love biographies, do you have a favorite one? A great biography to suggest to me?”
“Yes, the biography of Winston Churchill. He had a pivoting role in the success of allies during World War II and was a great source of inspiration to his country in that period”
“If i remember right, his advisers told him that he should get out of London to a safer spot but he refused and stayed with the Londoner people, is that right?”
“Yes. He was often seen outside in the streets during the war, encouraging his people and telling them that they would fight from house to house with guns if they had to. He was a very good leader. He also died pretty old. He was actually also an heavy liquor drinker and he was continuously smoking cigars too. When asked if he did any exercise, he said that his only exercise was walking behind the coffins of his sporty friends that passed away.”
Andy & Anastasia (coming next) come from Jakarta, Indonesia. Andy works as a private employee and was in Italy for tourism. They're spending four days in Rome.
They stopped me asking for some information and for a stranger's hunter this is a great advantage: I couldn't miss that opportunity, in this way half of the work is done!
I couldn't get much more information 'cause they seemed to be a little in a hurry and probably a little bit hungry too, so they didn't speak a lot with me. So, the only thing I can write is thanks a lot Andy for participating in my project, and I wish you great days in Rome!

This is the second photo I've taken for the 100 Strangers group. My first photo is marked f&f because I didn't let my subjects know that I was going to post their photo all over the web. Technically my first photo doesn't count anyway because my friend was with me and she started the conversation. The couple I photo'd were extremely nice and she even offered that I come to her come to shoot photos of her flowers! (Flowers I would prefer to actually plucking up the bravery to talk to strangers!)
Anyway, this photo was taken at Pensacola Beach around 7:00 a.m. I didn't get her name, but she was collecting shells and was more than happy to help me out. I was a little nervous but she was very friendly. She backed up for me and started again just like I asked. She said she was glad she recently had a pedicure. This was the morning of a big air show. Maybe my next strangers will actually include their faces... feet are less intimidating. :)

Gloria is Stranger #44 in my 100 Strangers project. She was watching me photograph a store, called Chloe's in Old Town Spring, Texas. Gloria wanted to know what I was taking so I told her. Turns out Gloria works in the shop and has for several years. The lovely door I was capturing turns out was not part of the building orginally but was added on by the shop owner's dad. Gloria actually has worked in the Old Town Spring shopping area for a total of about 12 years. She enjoys it very much and invited me to come shop at Chloe's. I ran into Scott Fisher in Threadgill's World Headquarters, the home of the Austin, Texas, '70s hippie-era myth derived from a combination of Kenneth Threadgill's old gas station turned restaurant/music haven and Armadillo World Headquarters, the infamous live-music venue.
I loved the light overhead and asked him to pose with it. Scott is the chief meteorologist (aka weatherman) for the Fox news station in Austin. He's originally from New York, then worked in Tennessee before arriving in Austin 10 years ago for the weather gig. I met him while asking to borrow some Crayons from his table for my son. Oh, and Scott ordered fried catfish for dinner. Good choice.

"If you could take one thing away from all this, remember that rejection and denial are self inflictions".
Where do I even begin with this man? Before I get into his story, I feel it is necessary to proclaim the magnitude of admiration I have for this man. I don't exaggerate when I say he's one of the most respectable men I've met. When I first approached him, he was on his way to grab lunch. He invited me to join him and even paid for my meal. This was the first time I've shared a meal with a stranger and I have to say: getting to know someone over a meal, makes it all the better.
This man's name is Aaron. No one would guess that a man of his stature would originate from such humble beginnings. He was raised as a foster child, and many people couldn't empathize with the kinds of struggles he's faced growing up. The most difficult part of it was "the preconceived notion that his life would amount to nothing significant". People would actually say that to his face, labeling him based off his circumstances. I couldn't imagine the kind of rejection one would feel hearing that as a kid. Once Aaron turned 18, he joined the military, where he was exposed to the harshest realities of life and death. An event of explosions in Iraq led to his medical discharge, where his life had a turning point. All his life, he was told that he wasn't significant and that he couldn't achieve anything. It was at this point in life that something clicked inside of him, and he decided to stop believing in those lies. He became determined to disprove those lies and achieve greatness. As a young veteran filled with ambitions, he started out as a 20 hour bank teller, the lowest position in the financial industry. However, he was always the hardest worker among his co-workers and because of it, he began rising to the top.
Today, Aaron has his dream job that he is passionate about, as well as the love of his life.
Aaron, you are an incredible inspiration to me, thank you for being stranger #71.

I met a very nice gentleman on this beautiful sunny afternoon. Robert was at a softball game to take some pictures. He happens to know the coach. He noticed that I was also a Nikon user and we immediately struck a bond.
Robert is originally from Philadelphia but has been living in Maryland for over 50 years. He works for U.S. Homeland Security as a videographer and photographer. He is part of the First Response Team in the Science and Technology Division. He also has a side business doing food photography in which he takes pictures of food for different restaurants.
It was a pleasure meeting you today, Robert. May our paths cross again in the near future.

This is Marty, manager of the Bath House Cultural Center at White Rock Lake in Dallas, Texas. She is one of my strangers in the 100 Stranger Project. I had taken her photo with one of the large art pieces on the wall for Day of the Dead.
And this is a photo of Marty and her "special" dog. But wait... there is more to this story! As I was leaving the venue, I passed by her office and approached to thank her for the photo op when I saw a sweet dog on her shelf. I did a double take as the dog looked so real... and so very cute! Being a dog lover I had to comment on how adorable the dog looked. She took him down from the shelf and then told me that she had made him out of the lining of an old coat. Say what? You MADE him? Seriously? She has been known to make props and costumes for her theater work, and this one was definitely over the top! As she cuddled the dog, I snapped her photo and this was definitely my favorite photo, but wanted her stranger photo taken with the Day of the Dead art exhibit.
Thank you again Marty for the photo op! Seeing this photo of you and your dog just brings a smile to my face!
Melanie looks so chic with her hat and sunglasses that she could be on the cover of a fashion magazine.
She was working at a hot-dog stand. She told me that it was not the first time that week that somebody asked her for a picture, but the previous time was a group of tourists that wanted to take a picture of the hot-dog stand instead! To each his own, I say.
She's taking it easy for now but she's thinking about going back to college or university, perhaps to study photography. I think that no matter which side of the camera she finds herself on, she'll do great.

Meet J.P. my stranger #13.
Another interesting stranger encounter while I was visiting Copenhagen!
I walked through the doors of my hotel on the way to do more sightseeing .There was a beautiful shiny black automobile parked at the door with a gentleman standing next to the open back door.The car also had two small British flags flying on it's hood. Recognizing the flags,I asked the gentleman if he was waiting for someone important like the British ambassador.He replied,no,he was waiting for Prince Michael. I said, "Prince Michael of Kent, the Queen of England's cousin "? He said yes !
I wished him a good morning and started on my way. I had just gone a few feet when I stopped.This would make a great stranger story, I thought !! I took my camera out of my bag and went back to the car. I told him I was Canadian ,on holiday ,and explained the stranger project.He agreed to let me take his photo in front of the car. I knew he was expecting the Prince to come ,so I took one quick photo.I had just taken the photo,when I heard the sliding doors of the hotel open.I turned to the doors and out walked Prince Michael ! I said "Excuse me sir,could I take your photo", but the prince was in the car and the door shut before I could finish the sentence ! I hesitated for a couple of seconds,then lifted my camera and snapped !! (see below photo) .

Flickr Stranger #8 (8/100) for me is Rob, owner of the Surrey Inn Restaurant in Caldwell, TX, where
we met during lunch. He offers a lunch buffet which has a great selection of delicious comfort foods, homecooking at it's best. With offerings of veggies, meat entrees, salads, and desserts. Difficult to make a decision but not a problem with any selection as it all looks & is wonderful. When we pulled
up being our first time to eat here we checked with customers coming out and they said it was great & quickly suggested different of their fave menu items. Hooked we headed in and made our selection and we were definitely in agreement with those we asked outside... it all was yummy. While we were eating our lunch, the owner, Rob, came by our table to check on us and make small talk. A conversation began and it then led to a wonderful visit. He is a very kind and thoughtful man who loves the Lord as we do and was anxious to share. You know God works in mysterious ways and I know it was a Divine plan that we stop at the Surrey Inn Restaurant and meet Rob. Our short time together took us from strangers to friends. Thank you so very much Rob for taking time out of your busy schedule to visit with us, encourage, and make the start of our long trip that day very special. And a big thanks for wanting to be one of my Flickr Strangers!!!!

My half century of strangers is a character I sat down next to. We started talking and he told me he moved to Cardiff 53 years ago and used to live in Somalia. His name he informed me is Ali Baba and he said his 40 thieves were all out working.

My encounter with Tamika was very brief since she was working. I have been wanting to try Smitten Ice Cream (smittenicecream.com/) since I read about it early this year. At this ice cream place they make the ice cream as you order it, adding the ingredients and mixing them using liquid nitrogen to make it freeze. I ordered to Tcho Chocolate flavor. While my ice cream was being made I watched Tamika get to work on a flood of orders that had just come in from the Golden Gate Mother's Group (and all their little kids).
I didn't have much time to talk or explain the 100 Strangers to Tamika but she agreed to the photo and posting. She had a good deal of two foot admirers standing on milk crates watching her make their ice cream.

I headed in to Edinburgh for the first day of the Fringe Festival hoping to find some interesting strangers to photograph knowing that everyone would be a little more open and accepting of strange photographers in the party atmosphere. It was my first outing actually approaching complete strangers and asking them if I could photograph them but the festival atmosphere rubbed off on me too and I just jumped straight in.
I decided to save time by setting up my strobe lights then waiting for someone interesting to pass by, rather than hunt someone down and then make them hang around while I set everything up.
I found a place not too far from the box office in Bristo Square where everyone was milling around and soon had plenty of really great looking subjects everywhere. I approached maybe thirty people and only got turned down by two of them so came away from my first proper day photographing strangers for the project with 28 really great strangers photographed.
Unfortunately in all the hussle and excitement I completely failed at getting everyones details and stories though, I found myself trying to take their portraits as quickly as possible so I could let them get away again without holding them up any longer.
I must of only spent around thirty seconds to a minute with each stranger, which would of been fine if I'd actually got around to at least asking their names and where they're from.
Definitely a lesson learned for next time, not to feel so guilty about taking up one or two minutes of someones time when they've agreed to be photographed, and to spend a little more time chatting to my strangers.
I have just spent a photographically productive two hours strolling around Hat Yai in southern Thailand—see the previous few pages of my photostream—and I'm content. I decided to have some dinner in the cafe in my hotel and take it easy for the evening.
While waiting for my dinner I notice Mary adding finishing touches to her costume. I ask what it is for. It hadn't occurred to me that I had come to Hat Yai at Halloween. (Yes, it's taken me a while to upload these.) And yes, Mary is off to a Halloween celebration. I assumed is was to be a private function but as we chatted she tells me it is to be in the street just a few blocks away.
I decided that I really had to get a photo of Mary and yes, she's happy about that, so long as I'm prepared to wait until she finishes adding a few extra touches.
I think it was worth waiting for—doesn't she look great?

My last night in Las Vegas, I was at the Bellagio watching those amazing fountains after dinner. After the show, I spotted a woman with an amazing smile with a friend. They were laughing so hard as they were taking selfies.
I introduced myself and told them about my project. I asked the lady with the great smile if she would participate. Ceriolith continued to smile, but she was not so sure. Her friend spoke much better English and encouraged her. She agreed.
It turns out that Ceriolith is from Mexico and she had only been in Las Vegas a few hours. Her friend was actually teaching her to take selfies when I saw them which is why they were laughing so hard.

Meet Cynthia. Cynthia is a third year Biology major studying at UCD. After graduation Cynthia would like to work in a lab maybe in a hospital. An interesting fact about Cynthia is she loves cats, but highly allergic to them and doesn't mind suffering to be around them.

Stranger #4: This is Mav a traditional barber in Manchester. Mav has only recently moved to Manchester to hone his barbering skills under the tutelage of Johnny Shanahan at Barber Barber in Barton Arcade.
I was especially drawn to Mav's moustache, obviously.

This is Sid and Eden, at least those where the hesitated names they gave me. Sid is the girl and Eden is the guy.
So Sid and Eden are my first of a 100. I was debating about the whole one or two stranger debate, but I think I will go with 1 of 100.
So its 12:30am, I am hungry and there is nothing to eat . . . as I am leaving the house I was asked if I was going out to shoot this late, my response was no, of course not. Well I pulled up to Jack-N-Box and I saw them just they way they are in the photograph. I automatically though I need to shoot them for my 100 stranger project. So I go through the drive thru and get my food and pull into a spot where I am watching them in the mirror, debating on if I can approach them. I have already read some of the other group members post so I have an idea on how to do it and the whole 3 second rule.
I get out of the car and say Hi, my name is Stephanie. I'm involved in a project of taking a 100 photographs of a 100 strangers. Would you like to be my first?
Eden tells me that I have just told them my name and now we are not strangers ( I have read this response before from another group member). Then he ask me if its allowed to charge me to take their picture, I was slightly confused, and then realized when Sid said even change would be good that this was just not a some kids hanging out or waiting for a ride. My heart sunk. I said all I had was change . . .
I was trying to find out about them, I asked if they were from around here, and once again I received hesitant responses that seemed not accurate with one another. By the uncomfortableness of the two I decided not to ask any more questions. I thank them for allowing me to photograph them. I let them know that it would be on this site and if that was cool, and gave them the link.
My heart goes out to Sid and Eden ( or whatever their names are) and I will be praying for them to find a save warm place for the night. I wish them the best and hope that they make it back home sometime soon. Whatever their troubles are I pray that they make it through stranger.
Meet Alex who works at the Lab on Lakewood, a children's birthday spot in Dallas, Texas, that emphasizes science. Alex is a high school senoir who will sign to join the Air Force this coming Friday. As I'm getting near the end of the 100 Strangers project, it was time to shake things up with this photo. It's shot with a friend's NIkon D7000 and we worked to drop the background out in Photoshop. Unfortunately, we didn't mess with the shadow on the snake, so that still looks a bit odd. And I wish I'd gotten the snake's full head--and tongue--in this shot.

It has been a long time since I worked on the project. Almost 5 months since my last portrait. I was looking forward to continue and at the same having some stress again asking people to portray. But this one didn't give any stress at all since I did no go out to shoot strangers, it just happened by circumstance.
I was walking around some bourgondion wine yards to shoot some pictures when these three men came out of the woods. They started to talk about it being a good moment to photograph. They asked me where I came from and so we got talking. One of them was carying a short ladder around his neck, the other one a plastic holder with a topographic map in it. So I asked what they where doing and they explained that they were taking care of the signs indicating the pelgrims route to Compostella. And then I just asked if I could take their picture. They agreed, although all of them were more enthousiast about the other being photographed. These guys are up with their time, asking immediatly if they should give their emails to send them the picture. We exchanged names and cards, chatted on a bit about the pelgrimage and about what I was doing in France and then it was time to move on.

I was on my way to office, luckily it was sunny that day, I saw group of people with Syria flags in front on United Nations, I thought to my self wow…my 2nd Stranger…;) goal is clear ..lol
and I walked towards the crowd and started looking around, gazed few times took few pics of protest and suddenly there I saw her… she wasn’t difficult to identify in that crowd, she was literally glowing in that morning sunlight.
I approached her….but soon realized, communication was a barrier, She was barely speaking English, I had a difficulty explaining her about the project, she had a sister along with her, and they started talking to each other which wasn’t making any sense to me.
My Stranger #2 her name is Mishala/she was there along with her sister/ Christina to participate in a Protest/Exhibition to support people of Syria, to FINISH TERRORISM, STOP STARVATION etc.
I thought to myself well Avi this looks difficult. But she had something about her…I waited…I took out my macbook, showed her what 100 strangers is all about. She was totally convinced but her sister was no, no…
I asked Mishala if Christina is her elder sister, she said no she is just 16…and younger to her.
She asked me where should we take photos, I said her right here (as not to make her uncomfortable, pulling out of the crowd)
I took few quick shots, her hairs they were falling on her left eye, requested her to pull them behind, and there I got the perfect shot (later on I realised eyes are not crispy, but ye will correct that as I get along, not a big thing, then not shooting at all)
She was joined by her new friend, and wondering what was happening, her name is "Onillea" Syrian too, she doesn’t knew English at all, I showed them the photos I captured of Mishala and they were quite happy I asked her to give a pose and took a picture of both friends too. flic.kr/p/jGGoab
Well as I had to rush back to office, I gave my details to Mishala and the url for flickr so she can have an access to Photos.
One thing I picked up from this interaction is, its difficult to communicate and explain the project due to language barrier.
Second, Happy, free minded and talkative people look younger then people who don’t want to open up. (eg. Mishala and her sister :p )
