It was a nice morning on the lake. A clear blue sky, a little fog and the Fall colors are just starting to show.

I'm really hoping that the usual BH day trippers don't make their way to Brighton beaches this weekend. The country has been warned if the they don't stay home new restrictions will be bought in to stop the one hour exercising. It has been introduced in France today. Our Brighton police are out there patrolling the beaches in their uniforms plus mask and gloves. It is scary. The actions of a few can effect the whole nation. Please stay home.

Stayed home today. My co-workers will kill me I think. I just dumped them my load of patients. But I just really can't make myself work today. Stomach still feels quesy, and I'm in my picky eating day.

Two crappy pics in a row. Blegh!

Don't you think my philtrum is a little too deep?

Staying home working again this Saturday. I need to get out more and play with my X-Pro1 more.

Yes, I am taking as many precautions against that nasty virus as possible. I'm wearing masks when I have the need to go out (mainly walks around my neighborhood). I've been shopping online much more (including groceries). I've also been working from the safety of home since March, including the new job I started this past week. I sincerely hope that wherever you are, you are also doing whatever you can to avoid this dreaded disease. I don't want to get sick, and I don't want you to get sick either.

Confinement annoncé pour demain !

Let's stay home

Lane south of Bloor, west from Roxton.

I stayed home on Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day (WPPD) and photographed things close at hand.

Flickr friend and Cirripedologist, Urara BARNACLE earlier provided me a wonderful assortment of toy barnacles that she has reproduced as toy magnets and charms [click here].

Wimpy and I had a great time examining the very detailed barnacle reproductions and learned more about these very interesting sea creatures!

Wednesday, 8 April 2020: our temperature this morning is 0C (windchill -5C). Sunrise is at 6:54 am, and sunset is at 8:22 pm. Sunny this morning, after yet more snow yesterday. Snow is forecast for three of the next six days, unless it changes.

Yesterday, 7 April 2020, I finally opened my front door and left my house after two whole weeks of staying home. It felt strange! I needed to go to our community mailbox and also to a nearby friend's house. She had been busy sewing cloth masks for some of her friends and her neighbours, which was so kind and thoughtful of her! She had safely placed them in a plastic bag, which she hung on her garage door. Tomorrow, I have an even bigger "adventure" - I'm going out to buy food, just like I did two weeks ago : ) I definitely need milk and bread and a few other things, including chocolate!

Like many people, I am having to post photos from my archives as I am staying home, self-distancing myself, and not going out to take new photos. Will add the descriptions from previously posted photos, taken on the same outings, to remind myself of where I went and what I saw.

"434526 is an "Angus Wide Vision Caboose", riding on Barber-Bettendorf Trucks. Built sometime between 1972 and 1981 in CP's Angus Shops in Montreal this is just one of over 300 modern, wide-vision cabooses manufactured during that time. It was retired from service sometime after 1985.

It's now on display as part of the historical displays in the tiny village of Rowley. The displays include the CP rolling stock, the original 1922 railway station, several pieces of agricultural equipment and the last three grain elevators in the town."

"Two days ago, on 16 October 2019, I really did luck out with the weather. Knowing that I am running out of time before the next snowfall happens - we've already had two, one in September and one so far this month - I reckoned it was now or not to make another long drive. The place I wanted to see again was way NE of the city. I had been there only once before, on 29 September 2014, and that was just a brief visit. My daughter and I had arrived there around 4:00 pm after a long day, and I wanted to get back home before it got dark (out of luck), because of poor night vision. Also, having spent the day at two other places plus lots of driving, I was in too much pain to walk around Rowley. I was determined to see everything this visit.

After leaving home at 9:15 am, it took me almost four hours to get there, as I kept stopping to take photos of the clouds and any old barns that I came across. On the return journey, I think I only stopped once and that was to take a few zoomed-in (Focal Length (35mm format) - 1600 mm) photos of a favourite old house. It is so far away, surrounded by rolling hills, that it is barely noticeable. There had been no obvious change over the last five years, which was good to see. It is so decayed that one can't help but wonder how much longer it will remain standing. I could have posted the original image, but I decided to add a touch of filter in post-processing, to bring out a bit more detail. The first time I saw this old house was on 18 July 2016, when my daughter and I did a bit of exploring NE of Calgary. Then, on 17 September 2017, after noticing snowflake icons in the weather forecast for Calgary, I decided I would do a similar drive, but not quite as far this time. It was nice to see it again two days ago.

There is very little information about this house to be found on the Internet, but I will add links to several things I did find, for my own memory and just in case anyone else is interested in the history of this place. So sad to see any old house, barn or shed fall into such decay.

On the drive to my destination, I called in at a small village/hamlet that I had been to with my daughter back in 2014. There was an old building there that was easily photographed from the road, which is what my daughter and I had done. However, for once, I actually knocked on the owner's door and asked if it was OK to photograph her old grain elevator, meaning from the road. However, she very kindly told me to go over to it and take any photos I wanted. This grain elevator is a different style from what one usually thinks of, when 'grain elevator' is mentioned. I like it, and it is quite a fine building.

I am so glad I finally made myself do this drive, despite feeling sick to the stomach at the thought of driving so many kilometres that were unknown to me. Thankfully, I made it without getting lost, without running out of gas, and arriving home at 5:45 pm before it started getting dark. A great day!"

Quédate en Casa

When everything started, it was mandatory to stay at home to prevent the virus from spreading but... I was already at home. To be an opponent is difficult but it is even more difficult in these uncertain times.

Cuando todo empezó era obligatorio quedarse en casa para evitar que el virus se extinguiera pero... yo ya estaba en casa. Ser opositor es difícil pero es incluso mucho más difícil en estos tiempos de incertidumbre.

Staying home so I let my nails grow

Four photos representing today, while we shelter in place and try to stay well and safe. #stay home!

Today is a Sunday so, like yesterday, I am staying home to avoid the masses of people, including birders and photographers who have multiplied during the pandemic, who will be packing the parks and natural areas. Does anyone care about social distancing?! There are things I need to get done, so a drive out of the city will have to wait. Ha, so far today, I have managed to get a couple of photos of a House Sparrow which landed on the scaffolding outside my window!

Four days ago, on 7 April 2021, I wanted to go for a drive anywhere, in order to get away from the work that is being done on the outside of the building. Luckily, I had checked to see what times the Saskatoon Farm would be open and discovered that in two days' time, the farm restaurant had to close down, due to new Covid restrictions. Indoor dining anywhere is now not allowed until further notice. Our cases in the province are going up and so these new restrictions do need to be put in place. Getting to the farm in time, I was able to enjoy a fully-loaded omelette for a late breakfast.

The little Muscovy ducklings have grown so much since I was there last, on 18 March 2021. An adult was so attentive to them, keeping by their side the whole time while they explored their large enclosure.

From the Farm, I drove further south to Frank Lake. All I did was drive the gravel road loop, as it was extremely windy. In fact, on my drive earlier that morning, I almost turned back and headed for home. Driving on a fast highway, exposed to the wind blowing over the open fields, did not feel good at all. I couldn't believe my eyes when I spotted two American White Pelicans, lying side by side. Presumably, one of them was the bird that overwintered at the lake, due to an injured wing, which now seems to have healed. It felt so good to see that it had been joined by a newly arrived migrant. I wonder if they knew each other months ago. Since then, I see that other people are reporting seeing more than two of these spectacular birds. They are back!

There were a few locations that I wanted to quickly check on, on the way home from the lake. I saw quite a few Tundra/Trumpeter Swans in various places and distant duck species that were too far away to see exactly what was what. Talk about getting lost! I knew where I wanted to go, but somehow I just couldn't find the needed road.

Despite the very strong wind, it felt good to be out of the city for a few hours. Ar least it wasn't snowing.

"The Silkie (also known as the Silky or Chinese silk chicken) is a breed of chicken named for its atypically fluffy plumage, which is said to feel like silk and satin. The breed has several other unusual qualities, such as black skin and bones, blue earlobes, and five toes on each foot, whereas most chickens only have four. They are often exhibited in poultry shows, and appear in various colors. In addition to their distinctive physical characteristics, Silkies are well known for their calm, friendly temperament. It is among the most docile of poultry. Hens are also exceptionally broody, and care for young well. Though they are fair layers themselves, laying only about three eggs a week, they are commonly used to hatch eggs from other breeds and bird species due to their broody nature." From Wikipedia.

Staying home on a windy, stormy night. Good to be tucked up nice and warm.

(Note: These photos were taken far before the COVID-19 pandemic. To protect ourselves and our community we stay home except when absolutely necessary or for short walks away from other people!)

I was going to stay home and try to catch up with all the comments, but, Jan talked me into going out this morning. I usually do really good when she goes. I guess she is my good luck charm! :-)

I went out yesterday (by myself) and hiked 5-6 miles. Only saw 3 moose. A little spike bull and a cow with her calf. Today, we saw 14 moose. Only 3 bulls, but, this one made up for it. I had photographed him on the 25th, but, I didn't care for the shots I got. His right eye has been injured. It looked better today then it did on the 25th. Probably got a tine poked in it while fighting. I have seen it happen before.

The weather has been good. Just need a real hard frost to get them really moving.
