Our weather for shooting has been really good this fall. I think fall and spring have the best skies.

The beautiful Glade Creek Grist Mill at Babcock State Park in West Virginia. I was really hoping for a wintry scene. It was snowing heavily as I drove along I 64, but as I approached the state park the skies cleared.

My trip to Cumberland Falls this past weekend had one specific goal in mind, shoot Cumberland Falls. Earlier this year I was contacted by Kentucky Monthly Magazine wanting to do a feature on my waterfall photography and when selecting my photographs for the article I realized that I had only one photograph that I liked of this falls. In the past 6 years I had visited the falls during a dry spell only once, all the other times were during major rain events and my interest was in the many other waterfalls in the area. So, I decided to plan a trip that centered around the highest volumed waterfall in the Eastern US south of Niagara Falls. Nicknamed The Niagara Of The South, in my opinion it is the gem of the Kentucky State Park system, there are several easy traditional vantage points to view the falls but that doesn't necessarily mean it is easy to photograph. In fact I think it might be the hardest waterfall in the state to capture. Much of it has to do with the spray that is created by the falling water as a 125 ft wide curtain of water drops 68 ft into the river. There are a few other things that make it hard to shoot as well, the closer overlooks there's lots of garbage that accumulates on the boulders at the base and far way there is no foreground interest. Something new to me was this little window I found along the trail to the furthest overlooks, I had never seen it before and what really caught my eye was how the tree line along the river looked like it had been scaled back, perhaps the effects of the flood events from earlier this year. But after stopping and absorbing this scene before me I came to realize that I absolutely loved this perspective of the falls. In my opinion the second best vantage point of Kentucky's most impressive natural feature.

This was after the peak magenta colors for this sunrise, but I like this view and colors more than the "exciting magentas" that filled the sky about 6 minutes prior to this capture. the waning colors and the neat orange shade along the horizon looks incredible I think. I also like this view where I was out on the river rocks to see the I-95 bridge that crosses the Susquehanna River about three to four miles south of this location.

A Maryland car seen here in our local grocery store parking lot. Maryland is famous for its crab and its colorful state flag, which are combined in the sticker above. MD is now also known for for one of its Senators, Chris Van Hollen. Edited with Jixipix panographic filter.

I've seen several nice wildlife photos posted by others from North Point State Park outside of Baltimore, but no such luck for me. The few herons and egrets I saw were well out of reach for my setup. I did like the reflections at this Black Marsh Natural Area pool within the park.
It was a cool brisk morning, great to be out. Struggling yet again to find something to compose, I came across some interesting sand formations and rocks.

I decided I'd had enough of all the sunshine and endless blue skies we get in Scotland, so I went in search of some clouds and headed off to Florida, USA, otherwise known as the sunshine state... I was sure I'd find some clouds there and sure enough I did :o)
And no, I don't know why they call it the sunshine state.
Update: Please no graphics in your comments, unless it's from a group I've posted in - thanks

The Empire State Building is a 102-story Art Deco skyscraper in New York City at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and West 34th Street. Its name is derived from the nickname for the state of New York. It stood as the world's tallest building for more than forty years, from its completion in 1931 until construction of the World Trade Center's North Tower was completed in 1972. Following the destruction of the World Trade Center in 2001, the Empire State Building again became the tallest building in New York City and New York State.
The Empire State Building has been named by the American Society of Civil Engineers as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. The building and its street floor interior are designated landmarks of the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, and confirmed by the New York City Board of Estimate. It was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1986. In 2007, it was ranked number one on the List of America's Favorite Architecture according to the AIA. The building is owned and managed by W&H Properties.
