We didn't have the greatest of seats to just watch the show, but it was great to see the production that goes into making it all happen

these are the type of pictures you take when an opening band bores you

on board our cruise ship, the evening entertainment was varied and always excellent...as often as possible, we sat at the front, and I made photographs...NEVER using flash! (...nor a tripod)...the lighting was also well done...and in this case of two passengers assisting the performer, Mark Nizer,..as appealing as the actual people involved

All modern stage lighting equipment is salvaged from UFOs.

11/27/2011, the night that would have been Deanne McAdams' 37th birthday, Dead Air Fresheners performed a piece in her honor at the Mt. Tabor Theater, in SE Portland OR. Photos by Mae Starr with my camera.

This particular mask is one Deanne frequently wore where performing with us. I wore it sometimes too, and considered doing so for this show, but it didn't feel like the right way to proceed, so she looked on from center stage instead.

Now for something completely different...

The Chicago Tap Theatre company and their usual photographer invited me back to shoot their performance at the Athenaeum a couple of weeks ago. Shot a ton of stuff but this was one of the better ones. One technical item worth noting - this was shot with a Fuji x100T, handheld (tech data to the right). The Fuji was my wide angle lens for this performance (my Canon had a 70-200mm on it) and I'm still impressed that it shot as well as it did.

Jack's Mannequin was absolutely incredible. Words cannot describe how amazing Andrew McMahon was.

Bel Canto is a Norwegian band started in 1985 by Anneli Drecker, Nils Johansen and Geir Jenssen. After releasing two albums, Geir left the band to start the ambient project Biosphere. Anneli and Nils continued and had huge success in the 90s with the band.

After 2002 the band went on hiatus, and Anneli has had a successful solo career, as well as singing with huge bands like A-ha and Röyksopp. She's also a researcher and lecturer at two Norwegian universities. Nils is training to be a doctor!

Last year they reunited, and this summer they are touring some festivals in Norway. Saturday 14th of July they did a concert at the pre-festival weekend of Molde International Jazz Festival. And it was a great concert! I really realised how much I had missed seeing them live.

Their music is on Spotify and most online services. Check them out. Or go to your local record store and track down some of their records.

Here are some photos I took at the gig.
