I travel alot, and much of the time I don't have space to carry a tripod. Thus I am often looking for a way to stabalize my shots. After the last trip I think I will probably also say never miss the chance to shoot off the dog poop stand. Hey its stable, and in early morning light sometimes there is nothing else to shoot from. The next shot is what I saw from the dop poop stand.

Ever since the $ham Independence of 1947, the Indian ruling class, true to their servitude to the imperialists tias ensured that the whole exploitative mechanism of the imperialist web of international division of labour and markets is being protected, preserved and permeated to the average Indian psyche. The array of attractive slogans since 1947.such as "Democratic Socialism', 'Jal Jawan, Jal Klsan", '20 Point Programme', ' Garibi Hatao, "Land to the tiller, "Education to an, 'Stability". swadeshi" are all tell tale instances of the extraordinary heights or depths to which the art of manufacturing consent --the art of the Pf_lliamentary cant --to hoodwink the masses have evolved in 'secular' lndla. As a dynamic tool of this exploitative mechanism, in t:ountrfes like India education has essentially facilitated the acceptance, obedience and dependence to this imperialist plunder. Let us make a brief survey as to how this consent building gets manifested in the system .
The New Education Policy, which was formulated In 1985, during the tenure of Rajiv, was but an elu dation of the p~o-lmperialist policy of Indian ruling classes. All the successors of Rajlv Gandhi have followed suit. In compliance with stringent IMF conditionalities the indian rulers have transferred education to the profitable sector. As a consequence, education has become a vocation of the rich and affluent. For the poor and middle classes, it Is nothing more than a mirage. The UF government had promised to provide literacy for all within 2000 AD, while the Vajpayee-led government made the same promises; even promised free education lor girls up to graduation. These are the same as that of PVN's earlier promise of providing jobs within 100 days; which are but a mockery at the maladies of the masses. .
As per the 1991 statistics thfo rate of literacy in India is 52.11%. India shares 25% of the world illiterate population. The condition of primary education is ever -NOrse. Among the total strength of school aged children around the world who have never even seen a schools' veranda, India !tas her proud share of 30%. Among the backward developing countries, India stood at the 93-rd position in terms of educational development. If the same trend continues, according to World Bank census, in 2000AD. among the world's Illiterates, the Indian share will be 54%, the highest in the world. The enrolment In schools in India Is steadily falling, while the dropout rate is steadily rising. According to the HAD Annual Report '99, 2/Sth of the children enrolled In Class-! drop out before they reach class· .
V. Bihar has the highest dropout rate of 84% between class I & X. In AP, the dropout rate was 76.50% for boys and 79% for girls .
respectively. There are almost 2 lakh villages without primary schools. Much worse ts the present condition of schools in the villages. There are more than one and a half lakh schools with only a single teacher. Among Asian countries only in India student teacher ratio is .
100:1. India spends less than 3% of Its GNP for education while the defence budget eats away 13% to 17% of the annual budget (one .
should take note of the recent efforts to strike a consensus to Increase the defence outlay even further). As. 32 crores is being spent each year on Kashmir alone by the Indian Government to carry out military operations there. .
The Indian Government is advertising the Importance of the primary education over higher education with a sole aim of removing its responsibilities over education. However, since the 1980s, foreign donor agencies have been pumping funds in primary education projects In India. The total external funds for primary education from 1992 to 1997 was Rs 24, 517 million. The DPEP (District Primary Education Project) Is totally funded by the EU, SIDA (Sweden) and the world banks. The Mahila Samakhya Projects in UP, Gujarat, AP, Karnataka to provide education for women are directly funded by Holland. These projects are based in backward rural areas like Karimnagar districts In AP, which is an area of intense revolutionary struggle. The danger of infiltration of western Imperialist Interests In the formative primary stage is an ominous trend. .
In 1994, India spent only .56% of it's GOP on higher education. At the same time the number of Institutions Increased annually by 6% particularly, engineering colleges by 9.3%. This was attained absolutely through prlvatlsation. In the four states of Maharashtra, Kamataka, A.P and Tamil Nadu there are 250 private technical colleges. During the Chief Mlnlstershlp of Janardhana Reddy in AP, he sold out 12 medical colleges and one dental college to arrack contractors. In Karnataka. 16 out of 19 medical colleges, 36 out of 37 dental colleges, 53 out of 71 engineering colleges and 332 out of 400 !Tis are private. The government has gone further and granted permission to the private sector to open 15 colleges offering degrees In MBA and computer applications. In Kerala while the former Congress government failed trying the same, thanks to the huge upsurge among students, the succeeding revisionist CPM led government could form self-financing colleges a synonym for private colleges. In West Bengal Jyoti Babu toeing the new education policy under the garb of Ashok Mitra commission Is ahead on the fast track of privatlsatlon. Engineering colleges are being given away to private hands. In these private institutions temporary teachers are appointed with minimum wages and as a result, the standard of education has fallen drastically. Prlvatisation of the universities hes been legalised by the rulers with the introduction of ttle Private Universities Bill in the Parliament. Meanwhile, the BJP government has gone ahead and established the lndraprastha University at .
Delhi in an attempt to start professional colleges funded by big corporate and private business houses. .
India's premier technical Institutions have received continuous foreign funds. So while liT Madras was set up with German f~nds, liT Mumbal and liT Kanpur were started with Russian and American funding respectively. It is no wonder that the higher education s totally designed to the needs of imperialism. liT, liM and agricultural colleges are serving solely this purpose with crores of rupees being allotted for these Institutions. Seven to eight lakh rupees are being spont for a student who studies in liT. There. are 4.8 lakh Indian students in America, holding prominent jobs, thereby serving the Imperialist rulers. The Central Drug Research Institute In Lucknow has been sending its research repcrts regarding medicine for Cancer to the U.S for the past more than 20 years. .

Advancing women’s empowerment contributes to national stability, says DSRSG Walpole at International Women’s Day celebration
Baghdad, 07 March 2019 – International Women’s Day was celebrated today at an event organized by the Directorate for the Empowerment of Iraqi Women at the Council of Ministers.
The event, which was supported by UN Women and the International Medical Corps, was attended by senior Iraqi government officials, including the two Deputy Speakers of the Council of Representatives, human rights activists, civil society representatives, the international community and many others.
Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (DSRSG) Alice Walpole addressed the meeting, along with Dr. Mahdi Al-Allaq, Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers, who represented the Prime Minister; Dr. Thikra Alwash, Mayor of Baghdad and Chair of the Standing Committee on the Advancement of Women; UN Women’s Representative, Ms. Dina Zorba and UNFPA Representative, Dr. Oluremi Sogunro; as well as the Director-General of the Directorate for the Empowerment of Iraqi Women, Dr. Ibtisam Aziz.
In her remarks, DSRSG Walpole welcomed the upcoming discussions in Parliament on updating the Anti-Domestic Violence Law. “We need to acknowledge that domestic violence diminishes and shames all of society; it is a threat not just to women but to society itself,” she emphasised.
Reflecting on the challenges facing displaced women across Iraq, DSRSG Walpole noted that “They continue to suffer the brutal consequences of the recent conflict”.
“Female-headed households should be prioritised in accessing public services,” she said, and called on the Ministries of Defence and Interior, and the National Operations Command, to “to ensure that secure clearance mechanisms are coordinated among security actors to minimize re-screening of individuals already screened; and to consider removing security clearance requirements for civilians who have not been charged with a criminal or terrorism-related offence, so they do not face obstacles in accessing public services, including civil registries and courts”.
DSRSG Walpole also noted the high unemployment rate amongst young women, which is double that of men. She called on the government to “offer small business grants to female entrepreneurs to help them into the business arena, in particular to women returnees in the liberated areas, and those heading households”.
“Advancing women’s economic empowerment in this way will contribute to the government’s efforts to achieve national stability,” she noted.

City Life/Vida Urbana members and community activists for the third week in a row protested outside of the Boston Housing Court. Protesters assert that taxpayer owned banks, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, have been evicting families ‘no fault’ at alarming rates in Boston and throughout Massachusetts. Four people including longtime housing activist and one-time mayoral candidate Mel King committed civil disobedience in front of the courthouse and were arrested.
The group is pressing for a stop no fault evictions until Mel Watt is confirmed to the FHFA. Ed DeMarco is the current head of FHFA, which oversees Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. DeMarco has resisted community-stability based solutions to the foreclosure crisis, such as principal reduction or long-term rent contracts. Pres. Obama has nominated Congressman Mel Watt to replace DeMarco. These government sponsored enterprises are 79% owned by taxpayers and they are currently among the largest mass evictors within the state, displacing thousands of working-class people and eviscerating communities of color. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac own over half of mortgages in Massachusetts.
