I'm really hoping to get some Damselflies this weekend, but for now this was my first focus stack of a Large Red Damselfly taken at x5 magnification with the MP-E. There were 18 images taken handheld in this stack at F/6.3, ISO 250 and a 1/160 shutter speed, diffused flash was used. Now I have to say I would have preferred to have used more shots in this stack and using a macro rail of some sort would have been easier, the reason is that hand stacking at this magnification means that any shakes of the hand can mean a significant change of position of the subject in the viewfinder, for this stack I was lying on the ground for maximum stability :o) A slight crop in height, the width has not been cropped :o)

This is the same individual that had recently had Moths on the menu, I actually prefer the lighting in this one :o)

Hope everyone has a great weekend :o)

Trapped by Bonkers last night as I was trying to read. He's done this for years and when his claws aren't trimmed, he makes it stressful to move. (We don't trim his claws very much right now because longer claws help him with his stability.)

click here for a video showcasing the landing gear 'play feature'.

Another PT ship that was very difficult to represent in LEGO form, mainly due to the angled nose.

I think it's a bit bulky compared to what we see in the movies, but the size was largely determined by the gear system used to move the wings (The original LEGO set had the moving wings as a play feature- I wanted to add that to this one too).

I'd like to revise this in the future- make it less wide and add some stability to that sloped nose. But overall, I'm pretty happy with it. I'm glad I got the 'play faetures' in and I quite like the way the cockpit turned out (there was a lot of debate regarding which canopy would be the most accurate).

The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is an American supersonic, twin-engine, two-seat, variable-sweep wing fighter aircraft. The F-14's fuselage and wings allow it to climb faster than the F-4, while the twin-tail arrangement offers better stability. The F-14 is equipped with an internal 20 mm M61 Vulcan Gatling cannon mounted on the left side, and can carry AIM-54 Phoenix, AIM-7 Sparrow, and AIM-9 Sidewinder anti-aircraft missiles.

The sculpture is called the Churning of the Milk Ocean or the Scene of the Churning of the Milk Ocean. It is believed to be the place that holds the nectar of immortality, thus it portrays immortality and stability. Likewise Suvarnabhumi Airport represents the golden land/resources/prosperity/stability and eternality.

The sculpture has the statue of four-hand Narayana (Vishnu) placed on top of the Mount Madura. 9 gods are on one side and 9 demons on the opposite are pulling the king of Nagas from both sides. The turtle (Koorm Avatar) is the tortoise-incarnation of Vishnu which is the third incarnation form out of the ten forms according to the Scene of the Churning of the Milk Ocean. Koorm Avatar uses the shell to be a pivot for the churning stick. BKK airport Bangkok Thailand

Terrace Falls Reserve

Blue Mountains National Park.

The Blue Mtns received some torrential rain for a couple of days, so it was a great time time to explore the waterfalls in the mid mountains area.

These waterfalls only flow strongly after decent rain.

I waited for a day after the rain finished to so that all the sediment that normally turns the water an ugly brown would’ve settled back down.

My friend Bez and I headed down into the Reserve and we were met by a rainforest wetland.

The waterfalls were flowing like I’d never seen them before, and there was water and mud everywhere.

The walking track had a temporary creek running thru it and all the usually dry creek crossings became tricky & slippery wades.

There were cascades tumbling down where previously there were none.

The cliffs were ‘weeping’ moisture which made it quite a refreshing walk.

And of course, the wet brought out the leeches in force.

The conditions were exhilarating but made for challenging photography.

The torrent of water that was flowing down the creeks was creating a fine mist that continually covered camera lenses.

This mist also created a rather hazy washed-out looking landscape.

All the usual spots for waterfall compositions were now under water, and the force of the water played havoc with tripod stability.

Also the amount of water made longer exposures trick due to over-exposure.

We reached the Bedford Ck junction and Bez had to head off for a family function.

I continued left towards Bedford Pool and headed upstream on un-named creek that headed towards Pyramid Falls.

This gully is normally pretty dry but was alive with flowing water with temporary cascades and rivulets flowing in all directions.

It was certainly quite a memorable day with conditions that are pretty rare for these parts.

I am revisiting a response I gave regarding Ai usage classified as "Art".

>It is a playground for the craft –Anyone can hit “generate,” but crafting the right prompt is an art in itself.

Same muscles, new tools. Painters swap brushes; I swap models, seeds, and tweaks.

More eyeballs, more inspiration. AI lets my vision travel further and spark new ideas.

Reclaiming my story. I use these tools to honor my culture and ancestors. ((*Especially since they want to erase the Tuskegee Airman and Harriet Tubman from the books and galleries!!!)

But on a deeper level stability is to be recognized as a means, along with the other vows, “to stabilize us in a life of union to the will of God,” what the tradition calls “virginity of spirit.” Whereas he had initially focused on negation, his brief discussion of the vows concludes with the more positive description of conversion of manners as “orienting our whole life to God in faith and love,” as “a vow to live ‘in the Spirit.’”

This little guy was actually still for a nanosecond. Very hyper little birds, they are quite fun to watch flitting from feeder to tree. Another storm, another several inches of rain and 7 hours of close calls with Tornadoes but our luck held here and aside from the flooding which is commonplace now, there was no damage. Perhaps March will bring some stability in the atmosphere but I doubt it Thanks for the look and have a great thursday.

The City of Opa-Locka was the vision of aviation pioneer, Glen Curtiss. Opa-Locka is an urban community occupying 4.2 square miles in the North-Western area of Miami-Dade County, Florida. The city boundaries are as follows: on the North-NW 151st Street, on the South - N.W. 125th Street, on the East – NW 45th Avenue on the West. On May 14, 1926, Opa-Locka was chartered as a town by twenty-eight registered voters.

The area was originally named by the Native Americans “Opa-tisha-wocka-locka” meaning “a big island covered with many trees and swamps” but the name was quickly shortened to Opa-Locka. The City was developed based on the Arabian Nights theme which is evident by the large collection of Moorish architecture throughout the city and with street names like Sabur, Sultan, Ali Baba, Sharazad, Aladdin, and Sesame. Mr. Curtiss and architect, Bernhardt Muller, built 105 buildings with an array of domes, minarets, and outside staircases. By the time Mr. Curtiss completed his vision for Opa-Locka he had built a self-contained city with a hotel, zoo park, golf course, archery club, swimming pool, airport, and train station.

The September 1926 hurricane badly damaged the City, destroying many of the structures, but the surviving Moorish-style buildings continue to give Opa-Locka its unique appearance. Opa-Locka currently has twenty buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The U.S. Navy opened a base at the Opa-Locka Airport shortly after the hurricane which allowed the City to thrive after the hurricane but the base closed in the 1950s. The City experienced a decline and was labeled a "struggling community" in South Florida. Despite the challenges, the City has regained the spirit it was founded in 1926. Under the direction of Mayor Myra L. Taylor, city officials have vowed to turn the city around by focusing on crime prevention, cleaning up the city, and maintaining financial stability. This drive has generated an increased sense of community, pride among Opa-Locka residents, and a major drop in crime. In keeping with that vow and to advance community pride, the city became the first community in the United States to commemorate the first African-American President of the United States by renaming a mile-long section of Perviz Avenue from Oriental Boulevard to Ali-Baba Avenue, Barack Obama Avenue on February 17, 2009.

In addition to the unique buildings, Opa-Locka has a large general aviation airport, three parks, two lakes, and a railroad station which is currently the tri-rail station. The City is comprised of a mixture of residential, commercial, and industrial zones. Despite its limited resources, the City was the backdrop for the making of movies such as Texas Justice, Bad Boyz II, and 2 Fast 2 Furious.

In the meandering vastness of the space-time continuum, between the fixed points of Nevertime and Evertime, if you are lucky, you will find Sometime. Sometime manifests itself as temporary vortex of stability where wonderful things can happen, if only for a short period. Reality is semi-suspended, and magic becomes semi-real. Some call Sometime, “The Photo Trip.”

At the edge of Sometime, three beings set off on a Quest. Travelling from the Realm of Perpetual Misery* on the backs of Huginn and Muninn, Odin’s ravens, they are taken deep into the vortex, into the Land of Ice. As with all good Quests, the main protagonists need to be introduced. There was:

- Vilinda Bangtidy, Keeper of the Keys to the Backdoor; a lady elf of the finest visage and a surprisingly broad vocabulary of Norse curse words **

- Paulvik Cliffscrambler, regularly voted The Vanir*** Most Lacking In Common Sense.

- Sveinn Fishbreath, the Bloody Stupid; a dwarf so downright stupid that he failed to graduate from kindergarten until the age of 43.

There are many tales to tell about the week-long Quest into Sometime. Most of these are associated with specific locations and will probably be told as part of subsequent posts. For now, let me give you a summary…

Vilinda Bangtidy may be a beautiful elf but her habit of loudly regaling stories of her youth, combined her lack of social filters, resulted in a most unfortunate incident when a family of travellers overheard one of her tales about a birthday card. A mere birthday card has to be innocent, right? Well, what this family heard resulted in them running screaming back to their campervan, hands over ears, and making the most rapid of departures. Unfortunately for them, they seemed to be on exactly the same travel itinerary as our intrepid three Quest-goers. Every time Vilinda, Paulvik and Sveinn pulled up at a location, there would be a squeal of studded tyres as our campervan enthusiasts disappeared in cloud of black dust and snow. It is believed that they are still in therapy. And they probably will be for the rest of their natural lives. And afterlives.

Paulvik Cliffscrambler is a master of photography imagery. But. And it is a big “but”. Sometimes there are cognisant disconnects between his well-refined academic neurons and their grasp of basic reality. A big disconnect. Here are two (of many) examples:

While sitting in the car, sheltering from the truly ferocious winds, he was contemplating the best angle to shoot an adjacent steam vent. The plan was to position the vehicle as a kind of windbreak to protect photographer and equipment. While gazing upon the high velocity super-heated water and admiring how photogenic it looked as it was bent at 90 degrees to the horizontal by the gale, Paulvik enquired of his companions, “does anyone know which way the wind is actually blowing?”

A sea stack is a landscape photographer’s delight. Period. So obviously, any serious photographer would make every effort to climb down the mud-encrusted slippery cliff face to reach the beach. Only, most sensible photographers would give at least a smidgeon of consideration if they could make it back up. Paulvik didn’t. After much slipping and sliding, and using his top-of-the-range tripod as a climbing pick, Paulvik made it back up to the starting point, looking very much like an extra from The Walking Dead****. He had a very similar demeanour, too*****.

Sveinn Fishbreath, the Bloody Stupid got his name through one incident for the former part and multiple incidents for the second part. While stopping off in a local trading post, our protagonist, Sveinn, spies some Icelandic Jerky******. Obviously he just has to purchase a jumbo-sized family bag. For some bizarre reason, his comrades do not want to partake in this fishy feast, despite his enticing encouragement. “It’s full of protein”, he said. “It’s very tasty”, he said. “You should try some”, he said. “I can’t stop eating it”, he said…. “Stop the car”, he said, “I feel very sick!”. Despite brushing of the teeth, four times a day, the taste was still there at the end of the Quest into Sometime*******. Alas, there are too many tales of Bloody Stupidity to fully document here. Let’s just focus on one. When most people are reversing out of a parking space and there is a sort of grinding sound and something is impeding motion they stop and get out to see what the obstruction is. They don’t pull forward and then try reversing at higher speed to overcome the obstacle. Repeatedly. Sveinn is now the owner of a very bent tripod.

All of the above is true. Some bits were left out due to censorship rules. It was an epic trip into Sometime, and I am deeply grateful to my companions, shutterbug_uk2012 and Lindi m for not throwing me out of the car during the dried fish incident.

Today the Hereios of the We're Here group are shooting the History all around us.

According to the English Heritage website, Lilleshall Abbey was founded in about 1148 for a community of Augustinian canons. By the late 13th century, it had become a religious house of great reputation and prestige. In the 14th century, however, a financial crisis contributed to a gradual dwindling of the community. After the abbey was suppressed in 1538, it was converted into a private house. The buildings were severely damaged in the Civil War during a Parliamentarian siege, but the extensive sandstone remains still give an impression of its past magnificence.

Lilleshall Abbey was founded in about 1148 for a group of Arrouasians from Dorchester Abbey in Oxfordshire, part of the wider congregation of Augustinian canons. The ‘black canons’, so called because of the colour of their habits, were communities of priests following a monastic rule but also preaching in churches and undertaking other parish work.

It is uncertain how many canons originally came to Lilleshall, but the founding community is likely to have been about 13.

PROSPERITY AND CRISIS

During the13th century, Lilleshall enjoyed great prestige. The abbey derived a respectable income from gifts and legacies, farmland, two watermills and investments in property, as well as tolls for the use of the Atcham Bridge over the river Severn. Henry III (r.1216–72) was entertained here twice in about 1240.

During the early 14th century, however, Lilleshall suffered financial problems. The abbot was accused of mismanagement, and finances were further undermined by the reckless selling of pensions to lay people. Although stability was eventually restored, the number of canons had fallen to 10 or 11 by 1400.

SUPPRESSION AND LATER HISTORY

The abbey was closed in 1538, as part of the Suppression of the Monasteries. At its closure the community had shrunk to nine canons and 43 servants, with one schoolmaster. In 1539 the abbey was granted to James Leveson of Wolverhampton, whose family lived in a house on the site until the mid-17th century.

During the Civil War (1642–51), Lilleshall was fortified for the king. In 1645 it was besieged by Parliamentarian troops. After several weeks, the troops forced entry and severely damaged the former abbey buildings.

Lilleshall was then abandoned and left to decay. During the 18th century a canal was cut through the abbey precinct. The remains were placed in state care in 1950, and later repaired and consolidated.

02.02.02 Nicaragua.

The Pacific Coast of Nicaragua was settled as a Spanish colony from Panama in the early 16th century. Independence from Spain was declared in 1821 and the country became an independent republic in 1838. Britain occupied the Caribbean Coast in the first half of the 19th century, but gradually ceded control of the region in subsequent decades. Violent opposition to governmental manipulation and corruption spread to all classes by 1978 and resulted in a short-lived civil war that brought the Marxist Sandinista guerrillas to power in 1979. Nicaraguan aid to leftist rebels in El Salvador caused the US to sponsor anti-Sandinista contra guerrillas through much of the 1980s. Free elections in 1990, 1996, and again in 2001 saw the Sandinistas defeated. The country has slowly rebuilt its economy during the 1990s, but was hard hit by Hurricane Mitch in 1998.

Nicaragua, one of the hemisphere's poorest countries, faces low per capita income, flagging socio-economic indicators, and huge external debt. Distribution of income is one of the most unequal on the globe. While the country has made progress toward macroeconomic stability over the past few years, a banking crisis and scandal has shaken the economy. Nicaragua will continue to be dependent on international aid and debt relief under the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) initiative. Donors have made aid conditional on the openness of government financial operation, poverty alleviation, and human rights. Nicaragua met the conditions for additional debt service relief in December 2000. Growth should move up moderately in 2003 because of increased private investment and exports.

"Whose idea was this anyways?"

This was originally intended as an entry for the Dragon Attack category of the most recent CCC. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to complete the entry in time, but with spring break coming up and my spring quarter moved to online instruction, I now had plenty of time to finish this monster of a build, pun intended.

The hot air balloon is ten-sided, which I achieved using 4x4 curved fence pieces. It can also stand on its own, despite the balloon section being quite heavy and despite being supported only by four 1x1 cones at the center.

For the dragon, the main goal was to make brick-built wings – no cloth pieces, that's cheating. :P Brick-built wings are much too rare a sight, in my opinion. In fact, the only builder I know of who has pulled off brick-built wings at a decent scale is Deus (let me know if there are other builders who have done this whom I've somehow missed?). So I wanted to take a shot at it as well. The dragon is quite fragile – the head falls apart if you breathe on it wrong, and the wings often break off at the half-way point, which meant that the last 40% or so of construction had to happen once the dragon was already suspended.

Speaking of, both builds are suspended on a giant technic frame. Don't ask me how I got that to work, because I have no idea. The frame is already starting to bend under the weight, so this moc might not survive long...

Getting additional pictures was quite difficult because I had to keep the frame close to the subjects for stability reasons, so the quality of additional shots is pretty bad, but nevertheless, here are some alternate views:

Next up, possibly some sci-fi, and possibly a lego music video??? No promises.

Specifications:

Stability: Maintains balance unaided

Capacity: One full minifigure slightly under torso

Armament: Dual missile lauchers, and any appropriately sized weapon

This is my first large-scale humanoid mech, and it's different than most. That being said, I rather like it. Note that photographing/posing it was difficult due to its size and also due to the issue of balancing it and not having it fall down and break into a million pieces. Which happened more times than I can count on one hand. The design was slightly inspired by my favorite Transformer. Other than that, I just built it in the way that I saw fit, trying to keep it humanoid and with clean lines, and no gaps. The detail shots I took of the legs and arms came out fairly awful, and the build has since fallen over. I might rebuild it and add some more pictures later on. /rant

While thinking about what I should build next, I realized that I've never built a plane before; so here's my first-ever serious plane - the iconic P-51 Mustang. I ended up sacrificing some aesthetic quality on the backs of the wings for stability, so this MOC is actually quite swooshable!
