Original in comments. Playing around with split-toning today, trying for an 'olde world' feel - after a nice geekwalk afternoon with Dobseh/Rob yesterday. HSS folks
Split Croatia- Pine-clad hills, secluded coves, beaches- Split and the Dalmatian Riviera have been premier destinations on the Adriatic since the days of theRoman Emperors.
In fact, medieval Split was built within and around the palace built for the emperor Diocletian in his retirement.
The charms that entertained Emperors are still evident today. The Dalmatian Riviera offers the traveler a heady blend of natural beauty and fascinating cultural sites.
Diocletian abdicated in 305 A.D . During his reign , the emperor ruthlessly persecuted Christians. Ironically Split’s St. Dominius’ Cathedral occupies his mausoleum.
As far as we know, the original settlers here were Dalmatians tribes, later joined by Greek merchants, who saw the value of the harbor and its proximity to the rich interior. The first Romans stablished a colony nearby at Selona in 78 B.C, taking full advantage of the same features. Selona eventually became the Roman administrative center for Dalmatia, especially after Caesar settled other Italian colonist there. Roman roads and aqueducts were added to exploit the rich mines and farms along the sunny coast.

[ES] Vista un poco funky de la catedral de San Duje, construida sobre el mausoleo de Diocleciano. Del mismo modo, el resto del centro de Split se construyó aprovechando la estructura del colosal palacio de Diocleciano, dando forma a uno de los cascos históricos más extraños en los que he estado.
[EN] The cathedral of Saint Duje, built over the remains of Diocletian Mausoleum in the same way the rest of the center of Split is built over the ancient Diocletian palace configuring one of the weirdest historic quarters I've been to.

The train goes by, leaving only a trace. From San Jose to East Bay, on to Sacramento, and the Sierras. It zigzags through the marsh, and the salt fields. There is a brief moment where you are in the #othersideofsiliconvalley
we spent a day wandering around split. not much to do here, but the town was very scenic and there were lovely outdoor cafes a-plenty. we had a delicious lunch where we learned croatian for white wine, and stumbled upon some great old architecture at sunset.
