Diocletian's Palace is a building in Split, Croatia, that was built by the Roman emperor Diocletian at the turn of the fourth century AD.
Diocletian built the massive palace in preparation for his retirement on 1 May 305 AD. It lies in a bay on the south side of a short peninsula running out from the Dalmatian coast, four miles from Salona, the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia. The terrain slopes gently seaward and is typical karst, consisting of low limestone ridges running east to west with marl in the clefts between them.

This image of Anna cuts a dark shadow along the ridge of her nose. The light is coming from the ground, it's a light designed to illuminate the adjacent wall. Her eye is fixed on the viewer like a laser and she is somehow able to split in two and not even squint with the bright light spotlighting her visible eye. I think her expression is almost vacuous, with a feeling that she is reading us, that she knows our intentions. There is no smile here nor a frown. Just a persona split in two. This is a very unusual palm tree. Very few have split trunks. This one was on Wotho Island, Wotho Atoll in the mid-1970's. The split trunk is most likely a result of the tree's genetics being damaged by the fallout from one or more of the nuclear/thermonuclear tests conducted on either nearby Enewetak or Bikini Atolls by the U.S. government.
