This photograph has been shot by using an Arduino based trigger for my speedlite. A piezo sensor was placed under the water glass. Once the ice cubes splashed the water, the piezo sensor provided an input to the Arduino board, which in turn fired the flash.
The camera was set for 8 seconds duration, in a pitch dark room. Needless to say, the camera shutter is opened up before dropping the ice cubes. Care must be taken to avoid any stray light from entering the frame.
The water glass was placed on a table about 2 feet high, and about 4 feet away from a white wall (background). The external speedlite was placed, facing the wall, on the floor about one foot in front of the camera. The speedlite was set manually at 1/32 of its full power, in order to minimize exposure time. Also, the speedlite was manually zoomed to 105mm setting in order to concentrate the beam and thereby bring in some vignette effect. The speedlite was covered with blue gel (Okay!... I’ll admit…those were in fact wrappers from Quality Street candies)
I assembled my own Arduino based trigger largely with the help of internet forums and a few friends, with total cost being less than about USD 20. If anyone is interested in knowing further details, please drop in a comment and I’d be happy to help.
If you've looked through my portfolio, you'll see I've visited these falls several times. It's a popular hiking destination at Frozenhead State Park. This was my first time shooting it with slide film, and I'd never captured it in quite this light before. I was pleasantly surprised at the Velvia's dynamic range.
Shot on expired (2013) Velvia 50, and home processed using the Unicolor E6 kit. Light edits in PS/ LR.
Latest splash impact of 2 water drops. Everything is coming out dark these days.. Need to improve my mood.

Here is the description of how this is one as some of you are asking.
The glasses were attached to a piece of plexiglass on a slider that is slide to a stop at which point the water splashes. The water never splashes the same way twice and timing as I found out is key. Thanks to a friend of mine for sharing her set up and knowledge with me yesterday. Her slider was completely a DIY that her husband made for her.

This throw-back shows the Pella West trail's steps through the shadows opening up at the water's edge onto the bright view across this Boulder County signature gravel pond... or a splash if you don't watch your step. They didn't even furnish a park bench at the shore so be quick down there. This shot comes from that trip out to Pella Crossing ponds open space Park, West. (Pella is an ancient city located in Central Macedonia, Greece, best known as the historical capital of the ancient kingdom of Macedon - Wiki. Were greek scholars among early settlers at the Pella river crossing? sheesh - what's in a name?) I'll check the last names in Hygiene's phone book.
Phil and I found a really good sky day for our circuit of the Marlatt Trail at Pella although it looks like the clouds are gaining on the mid-June day. Until then, we enjoyed a great sky rolling in overhead over the morning. It's good thing I blazed away when I found interesting shots to frame. This is a better frame up than those hundreds of thousands of antifa warriors the US sent to Europe for WWII combat - against NAZIs?
on the edge of the slippery pond bank, you got 3 tasks at hand... 1. ensure you don't slip down into the water(and its winter) 2. throw the stone exactly where it might make a good photograph with your left hand and 3. snap it exactly at the right moment. i guess i did pretty well...what say ???
