Decided to learn how to do water drop photography this weekend. What I learned is this: take 200 pictures and maybe one will turn out okay. I'm sure glad I didn't try this stuff back in the film days! (P.S. No Photoshop tricks here, just a regular water drop and a drop of food dye caught at the right moment.)
Sunset cloud filled sky above wind swept waves tossing across Lake Ontario and splashing against the shore.

Finally i have some good results. I was trying these types of shots from day before yesterday. But didn't have luck. I tried with Milk(wasted half litre), then with Wine, with syrup, with water, then finally with water and strawberry. Still there is some shortcomes in shot. But i am happy with the result. And yea i broke this glass later Accidentally *SIGH*.... now gotta buy new one.
And thanks to my old camera(Panasonic) for help... Without that cam this shot wasn't possible. Instead of DIY time trigger i used the hand to drop the strawberry and synchronized with the flash. Took me long time to synchronize my dropping time with flash. But finally!!!
One Lencarta Superfast 600 behind a heavyweight Translum screen, wearing an Aputure Fresnel attachment to create a radial gradient. I use this rather than a grid as it allows me to control the fall-off for a given size of spot, plus, unlike a grid, which blocks and absorbs the light around the edge to create the fall off, a Fresnel lens focuses the light towards the centre - so you keep almost all of the light, just in a different pattern. This becomes important for motion freezing work like this as you need to keep the flash output low: these IGBT controlled lights reduce their output by shortening the duration of the flash. The SF600 is on 5.5 here - ie only half a stop above minimum power, so the flash duration will be in the 1/10000th of a second region.
Massive splashes created by massive waves yesterday at Shore Acres. See how small the people on the rock on the right are in comparison to the splash. The lookout area is 65 feet above the water, so you can see how crazy high the splash really is! It was also beautiful how the setting sun illuminated the water.
Using Splash Art Kit to create this Splash. Clear water in a solution of Red food dye with 3 Flash units, Red, Green and clear gels.

Splash in a bottle
Playing tonight and trying to do something different, I managed to get the drip into the neck of the bottle but I don't really think this was the best shape of bottle to use. Just because I like a bit of colour I added gels to the speedlights but then reduced the saturation in processing.

A composite of several images, but essentially the bottle and surface were married with the splashes. Lighting for the bottle image can be found here.
Splashes/strobist: Elinchrom ELC Pro HD 500 and reflective silver umbrella behind a Translum scrim, at "3.0" (in Elinchrom-speak). At ISO 800, this yielded an exposure of f/11. Quadra "A" head in 5" reflector/diffuser, at minimal power (0.4 in ES) also around f/11. I under-exposed the shot by 1 2/3 stops though to help the water (food colored blue) to stand out.
Triggered by Skyport.

Another view of The Splash , a point on the River Mole where River Lane crosses it . My shot from the other day was looking upstream as well but on that occasion I was stood at a point we see the bridge here . From what I can make out I think there was a mill sited near the bridge but that was indeed a long time back now .
