Spalding Signal Box seen here on the 9th July 2011. Originally Spalding No1 Signal Box it was one of two large signal boxes opened in 1921 to control the station and its approaches. Spalding No. 1 is situated at the south end of the station and originally controlled the level crossing and the junctions to the Wisbech, March and Bourne. Although the box appears to be a wooden operating floor mounted on a brick base it is in actual fact an all wooden structure and the brick work was added around the base of the original structure for blast protection during the Second World War and it does not support the operating floor. The box was originally fitted with a Tyer and Co. Duplex tappet frame however this was replaced by a panel in 1984 when Spalding No 2 box was abolished and the whole of the station area controlled from Spalding No 1. The structure has recently be refurbished with new window frames at the near end and the windows along the front at the far end replaced by PVC planking. This has completely altered the appearance of the box and with brick blast wall and refurbished top half it now bears no visual likeness to the 1921 original structure.

Former railway bridge for the closed M&GN route. The railway long pre-dated the Coronation Channel which opened in 1953. Unlike in the mapping's tendency to attribute most bits of Spalding as Clay Lake, this really is in the Clay Lake area of the town.

Spalding Station opened on the 17th October 1848 by the Great Northern Railway, once an important junction station it now only serves the Lincoln to Peterborough Line.

The loco was new from Derby Works to the local shed as D146 in December 1961. She was the unfortunate loco chosen for the Old Dalby staged crash into the Nuclear Fuel Container in 1984 and the remains were broken up on site by Vic Berry.

On 28 June 1992, 156415 has arrived at Spalding on the 1508 from Peterborough; it will return at 1540.
The interior of Spalding No.1 box in 1981, showing the (majority) of the Tyer & Co. Duplex Tappet frame of 80 levers, which must have been one of the largest frames manufactured by this small company. This box opened on 11th September 1921 and as well as controlling the lines exiting at the southern end of Spalding station, also had to supervise the adjacent busy road crossing.
At the far end can be seen one of the two pedestals each with 2 pairs of minature levers which controlled the 8 crossing gates across four lines electrically. The gate wheel was retained to work the gates if any of the electric motors failed.
The frame was shortened to just 40 levers in July 1984 following the closure of Spalding No.2 box.

On the train from Peterborough North to Grimsby Town just prior to the complete closure of the East Lincolnshire Railway
Signalbox diagram from Spalding No. 2 from early 1970s until 1986.
Spalding was a crossroads on the railway map, on the GN mainline from Peterborough to Boston. It was crossed by the GN/GE Joint Line, which ran from March and on towards Sleaford and Lincoln. The town was also crossed by the M&GN Joint Line.
Both of the joint lines converged south of Spalding No.1 signalbox which was at the level crossing on the opposite end of the station. That box still survives in a greatly rationalised state. The GN line closed north of Spalding in 1971 leaving only the Joint Line branching off as seen on this diagram. The road at the top of the diagram with the double ended arrow was originally the Up Goods Loop on the GN main line. Below this is the former Up Main, truncated at a buffer stop and the Down Main has been removed completely. The curious connection of the Up Loop to the Up Main on the left hand end was configured to keep access to a rail served sugar beet factory that was situated about a mile north of the town. By connecting it up in this way allowed it to be treated as a siding, without the hassle of reconfiguring and resignalling the main station area. At this set of points was also the site of the former Spalding No.3 signalbox, also covering the Pinchbeck Road Level Crossing.
There was originally a further island platform on the Down Joint line with the back face provided for trains from the M&GN to originate.
The diagram shows signs of alterations using the later BR 'red light style' of diagram symbols overlaid onto the LNER 'white light style' diagram. The arrows are of the later style and 67 signal is drawn with a parallel stem. 64 bracket originally had a second doll, of identical height that controlled the access onto the former down line. www.eastanglianrailwayarchive.co.uk/Railways/March-to-Spa... You can see that the down main continued straight on from the Up Joint. I suspect that the gentle reverse curve in the centre of the diagram hints at a redraw of an earlier track layout, possibly to avoid conflicting up train crossing movements prior to the station. Looking at photos of the geometry of the remaining track in situ at this time also shows that there may have been a further connection from the down main platform 3 beyond 67 signal directly out onto the up joint and thence becoming the down main to permit parallel departures from the Main and Joint lines.
Some interesting photos and history here www.disused-stations.org.uk/s/spalding/index.shtml
I have added colour to an office copy of the diagram and redrawn the top right hand corner.
Today, only the two up platform faces remain in use, with only a double track line passing through a greatly rationalised site.
Spalding buses in the 1970s, and the beginning of the NBC era. The long-defunct route 20 to Grantham via Bourne and Corby Glen is seen crossing the railway in Winsover Road. In this picture the level-crossing has been reduced from four tracks with eight gates to two with four and the complex approach signalling has been replaced by a route indicator on a single stop/distant signal.
Wonderful sky!
Some track relaying is obviously scheduled here for the weekend!
