About the Pub

An attractive white painted early 16C building with a steep thatched roof, on the east river bank. The interior consists of several inter-connected rooms with wood paneled walls with a flagstone floor in the bar. A number of pictures and artifacts add interest. Overall there is a convivial feel made even more cosy when when the large open fire is burning hot and cheerfully in the stone fireplace.

There was still some continental traffic here related to the bulb market. The station even warranted an 08 pilot at this time.

Now all is swept away apart from a couple of short sidings.

A Grand Central HST comes through Spalding on a Sunderland to London Kings Cross diversion.Since they dispensed with the foot crossing at the East end of the Station this platform is also used for down stopping trains due to Disabled passengers and women with prams and push chairs. The service I arrived on was the only stopping train that I observed using the down platform.

In dismal weather the 10.57 Cambridge - Doncaster DMU does a little trade at Spalding on Thursday October 21st 1982. This was just over a month before the end of the joint line from March by which route it had travelled.

The lads in their parkas will probably be about 50 now and the couple seeing off friends - well who knows ? Norwich Cravens twin unit set no. 46 has E51263 leading E56123. The power car had spent over 18 years on the GN Suburban services before being sent to Norwich in early 1978. It was withdrawn in November 1984 and met its end at Snailwell in 1986.

The unit at the rear is the departmental 'Stourton Saloon' by this time numbered ADB975664 & ADB975637 but this was originally Gloucester RC&W set E51122 + E56300. It was converted at Swindon in 1979 and lasted until 1990 when it too went for scrap at Mayer Newman's Snailwell yard.

nrhp # 83003990- St. Michael's Catholic Church is a parish of the Catholic Church in Spalding, Nebraska, part of the Diocese of Grand Island. It is noted for its historic buildings, notably the parish church, academy, and convent, which were added to the National Register as St. Michael's Catholic Church Complex in 1983.

In 1879, the Irish Catholic Colonization Association was incorporated, following development work by James O'Connor, Vicar Apostolic of Nebraska; John Ireland, Bishop of St. Paul; and John Spalding, Bishop of Peoria. The association purchased 25,000 acres of land in northeastern Greeley County from the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad, with the goal of establishing a colony for Irish Americans fleeing harsh conditions in the east.[2] The town of Spalding, named after Bishop Spalding, was established in 1881, and a small frame church was built the following year and dedicated to St. Michael.

The community soon outgrew the frame church, and a new brick church was built in 1890. It was dedicated by Richard Scannell, Bishop of Omaha on June 9, 1891. The first church was remodeled into a school, staffed by the Sisters of Mercy until 1900, and thereafter by Dominican sisters from Kentucky. A new school building and a new convent were completed in 1913 and 1927 respectively.[2]

The congregation outgrew the brick church as well, and James Henry Craddock of Omaha was hired to design a newer building; Craddock also designed the Church of the Visitation in O'Connor. The cornerstone of the present structure was laid in 1909, and Bishop Scannell dedicated the new church on September 29, 1914.
