Philadelphia City Hall is the house of government for the city of Philadelphia, in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

At 548 ft (167 m), including the statue of city founder William Penn atop it, it was the tallest habitable building in the world from 1901 to 1908. It remained the tallest in Pennsylvania until it was surpassed in 1932 by the Gulf Tower in Pittsburgh; it was the tallest in Philadelphia until the construction of One Liberty Place (1984–87) ended the informal gentleman's agreement that limited the height of buildings in the city. Today, it is the state's 16th-tallest building.

City Hall has been the world's tallest masonry building since the 1953 collapse of the pinnacle of the Mole Antonelliana in Turin. Its weight is borne by granite and brick walls up to 22 feet (6.7 m) thick. The principal exterior materials are limestone, granite, and marble.

In 2007, the building was voted #21 on the American Institute of Architects' list of Americans' 150 favorite U.S. structures.

----------------------------------

Dilworth Park has been transformed from an inaccessible, multi-level, hard-surface plaza into a sustainable, well-maintained, green public space without stairs or barriers from the street. By covering existing openings and removing unnecessary walls, steps and barriers, the renovated Dilworth Park now has 20,571 square feet of new useable area (an increase of 21%) resulting in an expanded 120,557-square-foot public space. There will be a large lawn, tree groves, a programmable fountain and space for 400 benches and chairs. The underground has been dramatically improved as a new transit gateway, providing entrances to Broad Street and Market Street subways and the trolley lines. New elevators will make the transit levels accessible for the first time.

Alejandro Valencia-Tobón

2013

Everything started when Marian Sanmartino invited me to create something related with Chagas disease by using sound recordings. After some hours of experimentation, I assembled a kind of ‘sound collage’ which plays with the ways people perceive sound: while they are paying attention to a robotic voice describing the disease, they can also hear a mix of classical music with wildlife sound recordings in the background.

The theoretical argument for the creation of this recording is based on the concepts of ‘appropriation’ and ‘relational aesthetics’. With ‘appropriation’ I mean the critique of the notion of originality and authorship (David Evans, 2009). It recapitulates the ideas of ‘allegory’, ‘bricolage’, ‘simulation’, ‘collage’, ‘montage’, ‘parody’, ‘postproduction’ and ‘editing’. With the concept of relational art, I am paying attention to the analysis of intersubjectivities about fluctuating events in networks of information (Bourriaud, 2002; Cooper, 2005).

This piece will be presented on La Plata Museum in Argentina at the end of September, 2013.

Technical elements:

The recordings were made using a Zoom h4n sound recorder –two-channel recorder–, a Rode NTG-3 microphone, an iPad and an iPhone. Editing was done on Logic Pro and GarageBand.

I also used some sound recordings from the GarageBand library.

Monitoring headphones: Sennheiser hd25-1 ii

Musical pieces:

Finlandia Op, 26 – J. Sibelius

Los Toreadores, from the Carmen Opera – Georges Bizet

Interpretation: Filarmónica Joven de Medellín

About the text:

I firstly selected some fragments of the Wikipedia description of the disease. I then copied and recorded the voice from Google Translate.

www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chagas_disease

"Chagas disease, also known as mal de Chagas[-Mazza], is a tropical parasitic disease caused by the flagellate protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi.

It is estimated that around 15 to 17 million people are infected per year, of which 50.000 people die.

Chagas disease is contracted primarily in the Americas, particularly in poor, rural areas of Latin America.”

La sauvagerie et les abus des pouvoirs

Par le plus grand cynisme

De ses annonceurs à l’avance.

Actuelle, programmée pour établir

L’« espace vital » de ceux qui dénoncèrent

Ceux-la même qui inventèrent

Cette vile expression.

Assemblage de deux mots

Qui d’une devise étatique ancienne

Ramène à l’horreur et l’enfer.

La consternation battra

Son plein pour les survivants

Ce seront des vainqueurs

À la tête baissée.

Pendant qu’

Une chape lourde et noire

S’est abattue sur le monde

Duquel j’aurai rompu.

Reggae, Ska and Funk

(Africa / South America / Europe)

Forget your sorrows and dance! With the Berlin reggae band Nyabinghia it will definitely be a great reggae party. Beside mainly roots reggae and ska Nyabinghia's songs also have rock, funk and hip hop influences. In the early days, the guys covered songs of their idol Bob Marley but meanwhile their own songs predominate and make people dance.

Lead singer "Iron Leo" does not only convey a message with rasta philosophy that brings people together but also plays guitar solos that remind of the days of Hendrix and bring back the Woodstock feeling. This music is full of drive and energy. Percussive reggae rhythms, unique basslines, groovy offbeat and keyboard arrangements also play a part in contributing to create the individual Nyabinghia sound.

The Musicians: "Iron Leo" (guit, ld voc) from Africa, Kay Wegner (keys, voc) from Germany and Tito Araújo (dr, perc) from Brazil are the basis of Nyabinghia and are often supported by renowned musicians from the German reggae scene as for instance on the bass, percussion, the backing vocals or the brass section.
