Parents, children get financial tips at Kaiserslautern seminar

By Rick Scavetta, U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern

KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany – On a recent Wednesday after work, in the basement of the U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern chapel on Daenner Kaserne, Master Sgt. Michael McCabe joined dozens of people to learn steps to manage money.

From a wall-mounted flat-screen television, Dave Ramsey, a faith-based financial expert and motivational speaker, shares ideas on how to dump debt – one lesson of his 12-week Financial Peace University, a DVD course geared toward military families. The lesson began with a potluck supper and ended with attendees making a physical commitment – snipping their credit cards into shreds.

One by one, people came forward. Sounds of scissors clipping plastic were heard amid cheers and applause.

“It’s a huge weight lifted,” McCabe said, dropping plastic shards from the card he recently used to buy a new television.

In Kaiserslautern, Ramsey’s program is moderated by Chaplain (Maj.) Everett Franklin, the garrison’s family life chaplain, who’s attended Ramsey’s seminars and believes in the program’s message.

“We recognize in Kaiserslautern there’s a need for people to work on their personal finances. Our mission is to help the families to learn and grow,” Franklin said. “This course teaches you the basics and helps train you to incorporate positive behaviors that will help you get on track financially.”

In late-2011, 15 military families took part. Now, more than 20 families attend. And, there’s a waiting list for future Ramsey courses, Franklin said.

Meanwhile, Soldiers and family members can also access a variety of free financial readiness classes offered through U.S. Army Garrison

Kaiserslautern’s Army Community Service program.

During Military Saves week, which began Feb. 19, ACS held events and seminars to promote financial readiness.

McCabe, a New Jersey native who hopes to retire within a few years, shed most of his debts before coming to Kaiserslautern, where he’s serves with the 266th Financial Management Center – an irony he recognizes with a lighthearted smile.

“I work in finance. It’s funny that I’m here in this class,” McCabe said. “But, I’m trying to better the future for my family.”

With six family members, McCabe has to live off post, where he stretches his housing allowance to cover rent and utilities, he said. They needed a better car, which meant a six-year loan. When his TV broke, he thought credit was the solution.

Already, McCabe paid down some debts and set a plan for the rest. He hopes to remain debt free, retire and open his own business – an animal kennel near a military base. Meanwhile, he’s spreading the word to junior Soldiers. Plus, he shares finance tips from the class with his kids.

“Your kids get to come – they teach the children at their level, so they’re learning at the same time,” McCabe said.

Down the hall, ACS staff use videos, books and games to explain kids about wages, spending and debts, said Denise Fesel, ACS’s financial readiness program manager. Kids use play money at a store and learn how to budget their income.

“We’re training the kids on money, they don’t know because they think they are playing,” Fesel said. “But then they are talking to their parents about money.”

On the drive home, McCabe and his son Caleb, 12, a fifth-grader at Kaiserslautern Elementary School, swap stories about what they learned.

“We’re talking about different savings accounts, how some give you more interest,” Caleb McCabe said. “I think it’s cool to save money and see what happens.”

Reggae, Ska and Funk

(Africa / South America / Europe)

Forget your sorrows and dance! With the Berlin reggae band Nyabinghia it will definitely be a great reggae party. Beside mainly roots reggae and ska Nyabinghia's songs also have rock, funk and hip hop influences. In the early days, the guys covered songs of their idol Bob Marley but meanwhile their own songs predominate and make people dance.

Lead singer "Iron Leo" does not only convey a message with rasta philosophy that brings people together but also plays guitar solos that remind of the days of Hendrix and bring back the Woodstock feeling. This music is full of drive and energy. Percussive reggae rhythms, unique basslines, groovy offbeat and keyboard arrangements also play a part in contributing to create the individual Nyabinghia sound.

The Musicians: "Iron Leo" (guit, ld voc) from Africa, Kay Wegner (keys, voc) from Germany and Tito Araújo (dr, perc) from Brazil are the basis of Nyabinghia and are often supported by renowned musicians from the German reggae scene as for instance on the bass, percussion, the backing vocals or the brass section.

Camaraderie comes from ‘Cardiac Hill’ cleanup

By Rick Scavetta, U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern

LANDSTUHL, Germany – Armed with brooms and bags, Soldiers from Landstuhl’s Sgt. Audie Murphy Club and local Boy Scouts cleaned up Luitpoldstrasse in Landstuhl – a steep street known locally to troops as “Cardiac Hill.”

The project, which first began in 2009, has become a biannual tradition, said Army Master Sgt. Jose Raymundo, the club president and project leader.

“Through this street, we feel connected to the city and downtown,” Raymundo said. “That’s why we choose to do this.”

Luitpoldstrasse links Wilson Barracks with downtown Landstuhl. American service members and civilians who work at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center often park alongside the street and access the post through a walk-in entrance. On evenings and weekends, many Americans down the street to Landstuhl’s restaurants, shops and bars.

During the cleanup, volunteers filled at least a dozen trash bags. Empty bottles and fast food containers were mostly what was found. In the past they’ve hauled out tires, car parts and even a computer. A small van was alongside to haul the garbage away.

“Our intent is to show our appreciation to the Germans,” Raymundo said. “We share the same ideas and values as our German neighbors and we want them know we do this because we care.”

Sabine Günther, head of Landstuhl’s parks department, arrived with a crew of workers to help out. Together, the German’s and Americans partnered together to make the street and forest look better, she said.

This year, Boy Scout Troop 232 from Ramstein also helped out. The event began at 9: 30 a.m. on August 16. They cleaned for roughly two hours. Afterward, the volunteers went to lunch at the New York kebap shop at Landstuhl’s Kaiserstrasse.

Raymundo hopes their efforts sets an example for Soldiers in Landstuhl and the entire Kaiserslautern Military Community.

“It’s a way for us to appreciate the hospitality from the city of Landstuhl,” Raymundo said. “We do this to reinforce the camaraderie between Germans and Americans.”

Queens of the Stone Age were the first band to allow SoundCloud's Lee Martin to experiment with the new open source app he put together last week, aptly titled Premiere.

In his own words:

Premiere combines the most important features of an album premiere into one file for a rapidly deployable and highly customizable first listen campaign.

Here’s a quick video of it in action:

vimeo.com/21055026

And, here’s a short summary of what it gets right:

Design

Simple. Nothing says accessible like a big play button right in the middle of the page. Once clicked, the art slides to the left and the tracklist slides into view.

Social

Two nicely placed social buttons and a SoundCloud timestamped comment

bar. The comments created in the app will be carried to our standard embed widgets, and vice-versa, transporting this visualization of activity about your record around the web with you.

Accessibility

In addition to all modern browsers and shit browsers (ie < 9), Premiere also works on iPhone/Pads/Pods and Google TV. F%$k yeah!

Function

You can customize the page all you’d like to include purchase links or a link to enter your site, and we’ve provided a nice footer area to make that easy.

E-boner..? I’ve included more words and installation/customization

instructions on the blog post available here:

Class 40 Indian Summer

Between Dec 1982 'Christmas Cracker II and Dec 1985 'Christmas Cracker IV', I managed to ride 18 Class 40 hauled rail tours. This was my tenth, and one of only three that involved a pair of 40s :)

Catching the afternoon sunshine, 40181 + 40122 take the York curve which avoids the station and is primarily used only by freight trains 😍 - with a Brush Type 2 (Class 31) and Class 56 in the background.

'A day in the life' - log book update:

Saturday 27th October 1984 - 40181 + D200 (40122) on 1Z10 King's Cross - Newcastle railtour

***NOW HEAR THE TOUR on my SOUNDCLOUD!***

The Tees-Tyne Boggard was one of those classic rail tours, combining great traction (not one but TWO Class 40s ;) and some rare freight-only track. Organised by Hertfordshire Railtours and totalling 473 miles of Class 40 haulage towards the end of their career on British Railways (D200 excepted) - the finale of the tour came when the Class 31 & 37 which were supposed to replace the 40s at Peterborough on the return leg mysteriously failed to appear and the 40s were authorised to continue into London King's Cross, marking the last of the class in normal times to visit their old stamping ground. What happened after the tour was legendary (see comments section below) 😍

*****

Between 1982 and 1984 I spent many happy hours with my friends chasing around the North of England after the remaining Class 40s. At the beginning of 1984, there were still 50 members of the fleet in service, but this had already reduced down to 36 by the end of May. By the end of the summer timetable, just 25 remained in service, and only 17 of the class survived into 1985, all but 3 being withdrawn over the weekend of 21st/22nd Jan 1985.

D200/40122, 40118 and 40012 were kept on just for rail tours, although D200 had a second Indian summer :)

My interest in the railways waned permanently with the demise of the Class 50s, initially from the Paddington-Oxford route in 1990, and finally when they retired from the Waterloo-Exeter services in 1992.

As well as enjoying the thrash, I managed to record many of the trips and railway scenes encountered on film for posterity. Those days are now long gone, but happily the photos remain for me to reminisce over and share. ;)

Taken with a Zenith TTL SLR camera. Scanned from the original transparency with no digital restoration

You can see a random selection of my railway photos here on Flickriver: www.flickriver.com/photos/themightyhood/random/
