Painted by a Singapore-based painter, Tilen Ti, the soothing image belies the history of the Duxton Hill area.
In the late 1800s, opium dens, gambling houses and brothels flourished in the area, catering to local rickshaw coolies who gathered nearby. Gang and criminal related activities were a common sight in the area. Over time, the introduction of motorised vehicles meant that rickshaws were slowly phased out, and eventually banned in 1947.
Today, most of the historic buildings have been restored and conserved, and the area is protected as part of the Tanjong Pagar Conservation Area demarcated in the 1980s. The area however retains its seedy image, and is still commonly associated with prostitution here in Singapore.

These are actually 1999 re-issues. The original records were released in 1964. It contains really cheesy and psychedelic synthesizer music by electronic music pioneer Raymond Scott (co-inventor of the Moog). This music was created to sooth babies but I think it's more effective for brainwashing or creating some sort of mental disorder (especially for the parents).
It's fantastic!
These records are recorded and can be found on stereofound.wordpress.com/

This week's assignment was to photograph something of "soothing repetition"! My husband and I laughed at first when I read it because we felt that we were the epitome of "soothing repetition"...soup, ginger ale, tissues, sleep..REPEAT!! You guessed it.. we are sick. The entire household. And no matter what..my mom and her mom before that and her mom before that always said when you are sick, get yourself some ginger ale, chicken noodle soup and sleep and you will feel better in no time. And now, being that I am still sick..I am off to go get me some of that sleep!
