We saw many groups of Smooth-billed Ani’s during our trip to the Pantanal. This ended up being a species that we probably didn’t pay as much attention to as I would have liked because there were plenty of them around. I thought these two looked pretty neat on their perch, that beak is pretty crazy looking.

Second image in a mini series on Gulls...
This Ring-billed gull flies directly overhead and we look into those pretty yellow and black eyes. Click a couple times on it and you'll see the eyes even clearer.
This species of gull is by far the most common gull on the Great Lakes. Along with Herring Gulls, the Ring-billed Gulls fill all of North America with their scavenging presence and their ubiquitous cries.
Some people don't like Gulls very much, but I surely do. I cut my teeth on birds-in-flight photography by practicing hours on end to capture them cleanly as they flew by me.
The image you see above is the result of 14 years of practice and passion. And I still learn something new everytime I go out on a photowalk/photoshoot :)

Description/info: Redondo Beach is coastal city in Los Angeles County, California, United States, located in the South Bay region.
Bit of a foggy start to the day in London this morning. This shot was taken at 6.30 looking towards HMS Belfast, with Tower Bridge in the distance.
Having experimented for a few weeks with a neutral density setting on my phone, to try and make water look smooth, the Thames actually looked very smooth on this very still morning with just a 1/3 second exposure.
Half Dome is a granite dome at the eastern end of Yosemite Valley in Yosemite National Park, California. It is a well-known rock formation in the park, named for its distinct shape. One side is a sheer face while the other three sides are smooth and round, making it appear like a dome cut in half. Wikipedia

This image appears somewhat weird because it was taken in 'Portrait' mode on the Pixel phone, meaning that the phone is computing what depth of field is optimum for the way a "portrait" should look according to some algorithm, and while the background is actually there in the capture, if it is outside the computed optimal DoF, the phone blurs it into near invisibility. Computational photography.

Schenider-Kreuznah radionar lenses were used on folder medium format cameras. This one is probably from the fifties.
It has a simple, Cook triplet design and I expected some bubbles. But Radionar refused to bubble its bokeh. Bokeh is smooth and quite nice. Lens is soft even closed a bit.

The scene was lit by the Moon, however it was so high up that unfortunately didn't fit into the frame. Gave nice glow to the sea, tho.

Asters are some of my favorite Wildflowers but it is difficult to distinguish between so many species that look alike. I don't feel like there are enough leaves, and the purple color here isn't deep enough for New England Aster. My best guess is either Smooth Blue or Aromatic Aster, but I could be way off. I know that they are extremely beautiful and have a relatively short blooming period making me appreciate them all the more. Carver County, MN 09/05/20

Crotophaga ani (Smooth-billed Ani / Garrapatero)
The Smooth-billed Ani is a widespread resident of scrub and forest clearings from the Caribbean and Costa Rica south to Uruguay and northern Argentina; it also occurs in south Florida, although the population there has declined significantly there in recent years. Smooth-billed Anis live in small flocks and eat a variety of insects, small vertebrates and fruit.
