Taken in St. Thomas,On.

The big sign at Coca-Cola Sweden in Jordbro. I have one or two photos of this sign in my stream. No one cared much about them, but then a company from the UK asked if they could buy one of the photos for 500 GBP. That sort of thing really should happen on a daily basis I think.

Welcome to the village of Banstead in Surrey – and here’s a fine sign which illustrates the village’s long history. But who’d have thought that this attractive traditional design could have created controversy among the locals? Read on…

Clockwise from the top left: A woolpack, representing Banstead’s historic association with wool and sheep; All Saints parish church, which dates from the 12th century; a wheatsheaf, commemorating Banstead’s farming roots; the 18th century Old Well; and finally, the extensive lavender fields, which attract visitors from miles around.

And it’s this depiction of the lavender fields that has caused the raised eyebrows, because purists say that the fields aren’t in Banstead at all; they’re just outside the boundary and actually lie within the neighbouring London Borough of Sutton. And, it has to be said, the purists are right.

But then there’s the question of Banstead’s status as a village. It’s not a village at all, but actually a small (and very pleasant) town with a population of around 16,000. The ‘village’ refers to the half-mile long high street and adjoining roads... the scenes of my long-ago childhood escapades.

While waiting for a replacement head from Hong Kong for my poor Friday Night Frug Poppy, I have decided to redress Sign of the times blonde Poppy in her lovely black ensemble. I think the jewels and hair ornament go well with the classic look.

A rather special wrought iron sign is on the side of the former Victoria Jubilee Institute and public baths in Tunstall, building of which was started in 1889. The uses of the building included the Free Library and this was marked by the sign provided by local worthy and brick & tile manufacturer John Nash Peake in 1901. Sadly the building is now entirely derelict and up for sale at a knock-down price. Renovation of the Grade II listed structure would cost millions.

Motel sign in Lake Isabella with no known property. It now acts as someone's driveway marker.

Is this life's way of reminding me to:

a. Hit the gym?

b. Refrain from eating that last piece of cake?

c. Buy a better pair of jeans?

C, definitely.

For Day 82 of the 2009 Photo Challenge: Seam

This was taken at my company Big A just moments ago. The foreground is the old dirty glacier from the ice age we call winter here.

as tonight is the oscars i thought i’d put up a picture of the hollywood sign.

well, actually the back of the hollywood sign.

i love that the hollywood sign has become this iconic image, representing l.a universally, far and wide.

what makes it amazing is that originally the hollywood sign was erected as temporary advertising for a real estate development.

originally it said ‘hollywoodland’ (the name of the real estate development), but the ‘land’ part fell down.

paris has the eiffel tower, nyc has the empire state building, rome has the colliseum, and l.a has a big old sign advertising a real estate development from the 20’s.

which, if you dislike l.a, you probably see it as a symbol of the quick, vapid, and disposable nature of l.a culture.

or if you like l.a (as i do) you see it as something kind of odd, modern, accidental, impermanent, and endearing.

so here’s to the world’s most famous and recognizable real estate development advertisement.

ok, happy academy awards.

Established in 1985. It had a short history characterized by corruption. In August 2006 the State Enterprise disqualified and closed the Gary Enterprise Zone. Theft, malfeasance, misuse of public funds, under-reporting of funds, excess pay, hiring of relatives, paying for family member funeral services, investing outside the Enterprise Zone, among many criminal issues were found.

I think it's an improvement. Spotted just off Buffalo Park Road (at the bottom of Valley View Road) approaching Evergreen High School.
