One of Kent's most unusual village signs: an open box framing a collection of ancient tools. A plaque on the ragstone plinth on which the all-metal sign is mounted says simply: 'OTHAM Parish council 1894-1994. The tools that shaped our village.' The tools include a mallet, a mattock, a hop-dog, an auger, an adze and a thatcher's knife.

I am posting this little sampler of magnolia blooms that I made early this morning, of my neighborhood magnolia tree. I am posting them here in response to Irene Nam's Shutter Sisters blog post this morning- where she dedicated her beautiful photo to the hope for healing and renewal in Japan. (and everywhere else where hope is needed!)
It seems that Irene and I are on the same wavelength, choosing to photograph magnolias this morning. (-: Thank you for the invitation to share, Irene!
These images may become part of my ongoing, annual project I call "Seasons of the Bloom". The project involves photographing one neighborhood magnolia tree, which usually blooms miraculously in January or February. This tree has been an annual sign of the upcoming Spring, when all other life is still sleeping and huddled in the cold.
Hard times have befallen this tree these past few years, and we weren't sure it would make it through this winter. It blooms now in March, barely- just a handful of blooms, but it is still alive. To me, that's a sign of hope. (-:
