This was painted for, as I recall, Steve Powers' "sign shop" booth at Art Basel Miami 2007. Steve ended up buying it. Unless he had other shops contributing to his booth, we may have been the only sign shop in the US with a piece at Art Basel. The design was based on a snapshot of (presumably) an early 20th century sign shop in (presumably) a Chinatown somewhere (China?), that I found in the Encounters with the Other (Adventures in Amateur Ethnography) gallery, at Square America.
There are red on red accents in the drop shadow, and the letters and sign are outlined in gold leaf, all of which is hard to see in this photo.
For years, there has been nothing but an empty lot and an old Chinese Chicken sign on this lot.
Not anymore and here's the new sign. Looks like it would shine-up nicely at night.

Decided not to go out for a sunset tonight but then noticed the moon and how I've been wanting to try shooting it just like this for a while so I finally got to try out the 300mm zoom on it. I think I prefer the moon shot like this instead of at night. Reminds me of the death star lol
I have to admit I faked this photo. I was tired of white storm skies so I gave this sign a blue sky background.

I took another shot of this girl putting the A frame out. I converted that to B&W and posted that before.
Although this shot doesn't show so much of the girl's face I feel it is much better due to the shape of the girls body when adjusting the sign. I didn't convert this as I also think the colours enhance the shot.
In the Cambridgeshire fens, Wicken is mostly famous for the nature reserve there, now owned by the National Trust.
Most of the fens were drained from the 17th century onwards to make more land for agriculture. This was good for farming, but disastrous for wildlife. At Wicken Fen, and now several other places in the region, the process is being reversed, the low lying land is allowed to flood with enormous benefits again for wildlife.
I've had three trips to shoot this and it never seems bright enough--maybe a skyscraper blocks the light or something? and this time the neon wasn't all lit...but it's still great, and I believe the AIA Guide to Twin Cities Architecture lists it (along with the Grain Belt beer sign and former White Castle [in my Minneapolis set], among other delights)
