PN109, protecting platform 3C at Preston, shows a proceed aspect onto the Up Slow line for 153301 for another departure to Ormskirk. The signalling layout at Preston is such that south of the station, all four lines are bi-directional, with access to all platforms available from all four running lines through a number of points moves. This is the standard move for the 153, as it needs to be on the slow line for the junction at Farringdon Curve, which will allow it to access the line to Ormskirk, which formerly was through to Liverpool.

These were used for signal fires from the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties up until 1894. In the daytime they would use smoke, and light torches at night. At a set time, the torch was lifted once, twice with the enemy appearing, three times if the enemy was at the border, four times if the enemy was invading the border, and five times if there was a battle. There were five signal fire locations throughout the country. This one was falling apart, and was restored in 2009.
