60054 passes signal DY354 at Watson's Bridge as it pulls away the 3200 tonne loaded oil train round the inclined curve towards Stenson Junction. The DB class 60 loco has a 145 litre eight cylinder engine which weighs in at a hefty 24.5 tonnes! The cylinder block on its own weighs 7 tonnes, with the weight of the loco at 130 tonnes. The Isle of Wight once boasted 54 miles of railway, most of which was closed between 1952 and 1966. However its unique atmosphere has been perfectly preserved by the largely volunteer-run Isle of Wight Steam Railway, which began operating trains in 1971.
The Colne Valley Railway have recently acquired another signal-box. It is currently sitting on a low-loader wagon, waiting for a base, a crane and the manpower to place it on it's new base. While it sits there, I smile at the shaver socket on the outside wall!

These were used for signal fires from the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties up until 1894. In the daytime they would use smoke, and light torches at night. At a set time, the torch was lifted once, twice with the enemy appearing, three times if the enemy was at the border, four times if the enemy was invading the border, and five times if there was a battle. There were five signal fire locations throughout the country. This one was falling apart, and was restored in 2009.
