Tibb's eve collection.. A day of wandering.

Midland Railway signal box - Butterley station at the Midland Railway Centre, Butterley near Ripley, Derbyshire, England.

My first attempt at the multi-exposure HDR technique using exposure bracketing on my trusty Kodak DX7630 point-and-shoot camera and Photomatix software.

I intended to photograph just the signal when I say it at a crossing in Knob Noster, Missouri but just as I started to take, I looked to the left and there was a train coming. Just moments later, I went ahead and snapped the three shots for an HDR with the train passing in the background. Additionally, when I processed the three RAW files with Photomatix, I did NOT check the option to remove ghosting in the combined image which resulted in the streaking train showing up in the background...just as I planned it!!

Three bracketed photos were taken and combined with Photomatix to create this HDR image. Additional adjustments were made in Photoshop CS5.

"For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." ~Jeremiah 29:11

During summer, mountain fires are a common occurrence in the Peninsula.I took this shot on Signal Hill in Jan. 1976.

This signal was produced by Southern Signals for distribution under then name Sargent & Sowell. Safeway was another company that had signals produced for them by Southern Signals. This beacon is designed to be very simple to install, with an independent mechanical flasher built on-board and accessible via a trapdoor built into the bottom of the signal. All one had to do to light the signal was install bulbs, hang, and connect the two wires to 120VAC and the signal would work.

Southern Signals' own brand name "Southern Autoflow" sold signals of this design initially. It seems that after they changed the basic design of their signal from the round porthole door to a square door they re-used the castings with different names to continue to make use of the old molds.

The Signal Box came from Carr House East, near Consett and dates from 1896.

Ramsbottom Station signal box 7 signal (Down Home) protects Bridge Street level crossing with the signal box and 10 signal (Up Home) visible beyond. Saturday 18th February 1984

Ramsbottom Station signal box is a London Midland and Scottish Railway Type 11c design which opened in 1938 fitted with a 40 lever Railway Executive Committee frame, replacing Ramsbottom South, Ramsbottom Station and Ramsbottom North Sidings signal boxes. The box was reduced to a non block post controlling the adjacent level crossing only on 4th June 1972 and it closed on 5th December 1980 along with the Castleton to Rawtenstall single line. Eventually ownership passed to the East Lancashire Railway who reopened it on 17th November 1990

The box carries a British Railways London Midland Region maroon enamel nameplate, and 7 signal is carried on a London Midland and Scottish Railway designed all-welded stem right-hand bracket

So, here's the plan. Phot 37401 at Preston, then fast car to Barrow-in-Furness. Fast car to Barrow-in-Furness? Did you ever try that? It took a half hour to get to the M6, by which time the 37's were past Lancaster. Some um, spirited driving on the M6 wasn't much help, especially when you run into more than one jam on the A590 as you head west.

That kinda scuppered getting both Cumbrian loco hauled sets together at Barrow, so I took the Barrow avoiding line (lol!) and ended up at the delightful station at Foxfield, three stops north.

Wow. I mean wow. Despite passing through here as recently as September 2013 behind Western Champion, I had no idea such fantastic stations still existed. An island platform, the only entry being over a foot crossing across the up line and one of the most wonderful signal boxes that I've ever had the privilege of seeing. Semaphores, a view across the water, loco hauled trains, this place has the lot.

A relaxing half an hour in the sun and there's an unmistakable growl in the air....

Those that know me are aware that I am a New York Central RR fan and modeler. So on my recent trip to Ohio I was pleased to catch the last of the former NYCRR "bowling ball" signals just prior to their replacement on the now NS mainline. Get'em while you can.

Cheerful propaganda songs from East Germany (GDR), 1971. Performed by artists such as the "Orchester des Wachregimentes Berlin Feliks Dzierzynski" or the "Chor der Gerhart Hauptmann-Oberschule Wernigerode".

Most of the music is terrible (not to mention the lyrics) but to my surprise some of it was written by artists whom I otherwise respect, including Bertold Brecht, Hanns Eisler and Paul Dessau. Difficult to understand from today's point of view how these great minds could cooperate in such a project.

An old Marbelite 4-way signal hanging above the intersection of Columbia and Main Streets in Cohoes. Cohoes has three intersections in a row with old Marbelite 4-ways along Columbia Street. Since these signals have been retrofitted with LED's, it looks like they'll be getting a few more good years of service!

The GS&WR 1860 built Nenagh & Limerick Branch Birdhill signal box situated by the passing loop at Birdhill station.

Captured as we pass by onboard the H401 15.25 Limerick-Ballybrophy leg of the 'Branchline Wanderer'

Organised by the 'Railway Preservation Society of Ireland' (RPSI) this tour had visited Waterford, Limerick, Ballybrophy, Thurles and back to Dublin Connolly.

071 Dublin-Waterford 116 miles

074 Waterford-Limerick 76 miles

086 Limerick-Ballybrophy-Thurles-Dublin 163 miles

giving 355 miles of 071 class haulage.

This 52 mile section of line from Killonan Junc to Ballybrophy know as the 'Nenagh Branch', has been under real threat of closure for a number of years now, with it's current 2 trains a day (2018) in each direction one, how long will it last?, so ride it while you can.

One of several signal bridges on the abandoned line. Most of the signal targets have been knocked out, one way or another.

It's surprising how much of the original catenary line is still in place after over twenty years of abandonment.

Disused signal box on the Brighton Road level crossing in Crawley. The building is looked after by the Crawley signal box preservation society.

Seen on Saturday evening 20th April 2013 is the contents of Hammerton station's "Signal Hut". A 10 lever McKenzie and Holland frame controls the straightforward layout.

Three signals in each direction, Lever No. 1 is a wire worked mechanical distant with the yellow wheel on the left being the wire adjuster / tensioner. Lever 4 points, 5 facing point lock, 6 spare, 7 is the gate lock which releases and locks the level crossing gates, 8, 9 & 10 the up signals, No. 10 being a colour light signal thus having a cut down handle.

The doors visible in the photo are locked shut when the box is closed. The unnecessary curved roof is a lovely touch.

Following a disappointing defeat at the Stadium of Light I consoled myself on the way home by knocking another box off the list.

Hammerton, not a major railway centre, is located on the Harrogate loop between Knaresborough & York. The 14 miles between Knaresborough and Poppleton on the outskirts of York is single line with a 1.5 mile section of double track in the middle. Hammerton is the box at the York end of the double track section and works absolute block to Cattal just 1.5 miles away and key token to Poppleton.

The signal box here however is not a signal box at all, it is a “signal hut” !

The instruments and signallers accommodation are located in the station building with the lever frame accommodated outside the office in a beautifully crafted lockable timber housing.

In days of yore the signal box also served as the booking office and the signalmans duties would have included the sale of tickets. Erected by the North Eastern Railway in 1914. As well as controlling the transition from single to double line the signaller also has a gated manualy operated level crossing to attend to.

The box closed in July 2004, but has been preserved according to the description at the attached link:

Went up on Signal Hill this past week with one of the younger guys from my church. He's been getting into photography a little bit so I gave him one of my D90 bodies and we went out shooting. Not a great sunset, but we had some nice light for a while and it was a lovely evening so can't complain really. Got a couple of shots that I was happy with so figured I would share.

All shot with my D90 and 17-55mm f/2.8 lens.

Here we see the very traditional looking Rigton Signal Box. It was built in 1873 and is a NES1a design of box. The box has 6 levers:

1 = Down Home

2 = Down Distant

3 = Spare

4 = Up Distant

5 = Up Home

6 = Gate Locks

This box also has inboard distant levers which means that the levers are in the order they are pulled off rather than in the order that the driver will see them. This was common across the LNER another example of this would be Oxmardyke.

All signals controlled by the box are colour lights and the level crossing barriers are worked from a gate wheel inside the box.

The box works Absolute Block to Harrogate and Horsforth Signal Boxes. The box was originally a Gate Box but as other Signal Boxes along the line were closed it became a block post.

Unfortunately along with Horsforth, this box will probably have been closed by the end of 2012 with all control going to a new panel at Harrogate signal box. This is part of the resignalling that will see the closure of all boxes between Leeds and York via Harrogate within the next few years with control eventually all going to York IECC and York IECC is going to close when the new Rail Operating Centre at York opens. This will be 1 of 14 regional operating centres proposed by Network Rail to replace over 800 signal boxes nationwide.

We're on platform 8-9 at Salzburg's Hauptbahnhof (main station) where an S-Bahn train is seconds away from its scheduled departure time.

The term "S-Bahn" is used throughout the German-speaking world to refer to suburban passenger services. The term comes from the German words Stadtbahn (city railroad), Stadtschnellbahn (city rapid railroad), or Schnellbahn (rapid railroad) and is used to denote passenger train on the heavy rail network, as opposed to trams, subways, and so forth.

Salzburg's S2 line connects Salzburg Hbf with Straßwalchen and runs hourly through most of the day. In contrast, the S3 line I'm waiting for runs half-hourly through the valley of the Salzach River. Both S2 and S3 lines are operated by government-owned ÖBB. There is also an S1 service that operates via ÖBB tracks into Germany and serves the resort town of Berchtesgaden.

The buildings were built in 1813. Until 1955 these buildings formed the shore station and family living quarters for the light keepers on the Bell Rock Lighthouse which lies 11.5 miles out from Arbroath on a dangerous semi-sunken reef. Both lighthouse and shore station were built by Robert Stevenson, founder of the famous dynasty of lighthouse engineers.

At Arbroath Signal Tower you can find out about the fascinating history of the Bell Rock Lighthouse and visit the outhouse to see the massive lens of the last manually operated lamp.

Signals long forgotten guard the waterside drill track coming into Emeryville, CA., from Berkeley, CA. Today this signal sees trains by the dozen, but over the rails and switch it guards. One day soon, Union Pacific and the State of California want to enhance access into the Port of Oakland, and this signal may see traffic again!
