The Cowboy Motel in Amarillo, Texas, late 1970s. This motel was built to serve the famed Route 66, which goes right in front of it. I think it dates back to the late 1940s. The motel is still in business and the sign buffeted and weathered like any Panhandle resident that stayed outside for decades would be still stands.

It had been a long day; we were about three-quarters of the way home after a day on the road after a busy and tiring long weekend away. There were four of us in the car and we all just wanted to get home. I knew this old KFC was there and we would be driving by it. I had photographed it before, but not well. And I would not photograph it well this time either -- no energy or will to even stop, let along get out and navigate the parking lot. So I did what I often do -- shot it as we drove by. Making plans in my head to return to get some decent close-up shots.

Well, that never happened. And it won't happen. It's all gone now. Torn down.

I wish we'd stopped but that's just hindsight; I know circumstances prevented it. At least I always travel with my camera in my lap, always alert and ready for whatever might suddenly appear on the horizon.

Shoot them while you can.

I've shot this particular sign so many times but never at night. I finally fixed that!

I just read that Eliot's Bookshop is closing, after being on Yonge Street for ages. I was sure I had a photo so I went digging through the archives and, sure enough, I captured it on a downtown walkabout almost 10 years ago. I posted it here on Flickr back then, but this is an updated edit.

Another part of Toronto's past bites the dust

When I see 'em, I shoot 'em. Always glad to see an old Arby's sign...found this one as we were heading out of Cincinnati, so I didn't get the chance to return at night to give it a look then. Next time!

I loved finding this old Star Weekly sign the last time we were out in BC; this was a charming shop and cafe and I'd love to return.

We love this block in the ‪#‎theater‬ district since it has so many gorgeous historic theaters each with their own giant vertical ‪#‎signs‬. The Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre was built in 1917 and designed by Herbert J. Krapp for the Shubert Organization and was the architect's first independent commission. It has interior design motifs in the Adamesque 18th century neoclassical style. The Bernard B. Jacobs and the John Golden Theatre built in 1927 were also designed by Krapp in the unifying theme of modern Spanish style. ‪#‎signgeeks‬ ‪#‎type‬ ‪#‎typography‬ ‪#‎timessquare‬

Olympia Diner was manufactured by the Jerry O'Mahony Diner Company of New Jersey, which manufactured 2,000 metal pre-fab diner structures from 1917 to 1941. It is the longest stainless steel diner in the country. The current owners, the Gavrilis family have been there since 1974. Olympia Diner was originally opened in Massachusetts and brought to Newington, CT in 1954. #diner #vintage #neon #neongeeks #Signgeeks #retro #neonsign #stainlesssteel

We ate breakfast here twice while we were exploring Wildwood.....comfy old-school booths and charming interior, with darn good pancakes and terrific service. We'd definitely return.

Lenny's #Pizzeria was founded in 1953 and has been run by Frank Giordano and his family since 1983. Lenny’s Pizza became famous after it was used in a scene for the movie where the character played by John Travolta is seen ordering two slices of #pizza from Lenny’s, and eating them “double-decker” style, one piled on top of the other 🍕🍕. We love their #vintage #neon #sign and their pizza is great too! Photo and full interview with 2nd generation owner Josephine Giordano, appear in our book "New York Nights". #storefront #neonsign #neongeeks #signgeeks #typography #font #type #typevstime #signcollective #fontastic #dailytype #ig_signage #saturdaynightfever #johntravolta
