Surrey, BC

Well....where the heck have I been? Life gets in the way sometimes, but........I am getting back to social media, slowly but surely.

I took this photograph of the great neon lion at the Golden Lion Chinese Food restaurant in Surrey, BC, (just south of Vancouver) while out with my family and my sister's family -- they got a taste of what it's like be out with me when I suddenly see a sign I just have to shoot LOL

My family is used to it, but my sister's family....not so much!

Loudon, TN

We were headed down US 11, meandering south on our way to Florida, and as we were driving through Loudon TN I happened to glance down a side street. "I think I just saw a neon funeral home sign," I told my hubby, and we turned around to check it out. Sure enough, it was indeed a neon funeral home sign. Not a common sight.

Okay, the honest truth is I didn't just "happen" to glance down a side street. I'm ALWAYS looking :-)

On the road to the Grand Canyon.

Here are two photos of the Hiltop Mobile Park in Lakeland, FL -- one photo, this one, is a view of one side of the old, grungy sign, not a close-up but rather a view that includes the setting to give you an idea of what the area looks like. On this side of the sign, the neon has been removed. The second photo is a close-up of the sign on the other side, the side with the neon.

UPDATE: As of autumn 2020, this is gone.

Ratner's began as a kosher dairy restaurant in 1905 on Pitt Street and moved in 1918 to Delancey where it remained until closing in 2002. It was founded by brothers Jacob and Harry Harmatz and brother-in-law Alex Ratner and a coin flip determined the restaurant's name. In the 1960s Ratner's began to serve fish as well but the most popular items were their potato soup and pancakes, vegetarian chop liver, blintzes and cheesecake. #ghostsign #vintageneon #signgeeks #lowereastside

I wonder how many locals have taken a good look at the sign?

LOL

Shaped signs are such fun to find! The restoration of this oldie was very well done. I would have liked to have seen it myself before restoration, of course -- I love shooting the old and rusty signs -- but being everywhere and seeing everything is impossible LOL

Info about this sign from the always-informative Roadside Architecture site:

"The Arnold Pen Co., a manufacturer of pens, was founded in 1935. The building is now used for apartments."

"Around 2011, this sign was restored and relit."

This sign looked amazing at night.....when I didn't have my camera with me. And the next night, our last in LA on that trip, we weren't near here at all. I googled the Villa Theater and they are apparently still in operation -- those gentlemen keep on visiting I guess :-) -- so I hope they still have this same sign the next time I'm in LA.

West Hollywood, CA

A Hollywood classic.

From their web site:

"Gil turner 's fine wines & spirits were established in 1953 by legendary Gil Turner , who was known by press as Mr. Sunset strip. Located at the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Doheny drive, the stores become a main stop for those who heading westward toward Beverly Hills and Pacific Ocean.

Along the way it become the haven for those in the "business" - the movie stars, the producers, the studio heads and in the 1960's - 1970's, the rock and roll elite. Stocked with fine wines from around the world, spirits of all tastes and exotic cigars, Gil Turner 's was and still is a must stop for all those interested in west Hollywood’s sunset strip culture. Gil Turner passed away in the late 1990's, however, a new generation continues to brighten his star and enhance his legacy...."

Pretty unusual....neon mounted on slats of wood. This is a very tall sign, btw. The restaurant was unfortunately closed (just for the day, not permanently!) or we would have eaten there for sure. (Thanks to Alison Lamons for the lead about this place!)

The taxi driver didn't quite know what to make of me, half hanging out the window as we drove up State St in Chicago. But I have to have my drive-by photos!

opened in 1952, the motor-vu drive-in closed for good this winter, falling victim to the fact movie studios are no longer releasing 35mm film prints - only "digital" prints to theaters equipped with expensive new projectors.

Lonely old cafe sign in a depressing part of town. The small strip it's in has a nice angled googie roof.

I wished I had shot video of this, as the pestles lit up randomly, sort of in order, but not perfectly.
