Meet Richard Bartlett, US Army, 2003-2014, and his service dog Willie. Richard is a Recreation Therapy Assistant and has worked with us for almost a year. Richard works with Veterans in the Community Living Center, Spinal Cord Injury Units, and Mental Health. When asked why he chose to work at the VA, Richard said, “I have been a patient at the VA hospital since 2012, as I was getting my degree from University of Houston Clear Lake (UHCL). I worked as a Veteran service rep helping other Veterans with their benefits….school related, service related, or finding any other benefit they were entitled. After graduation, I know that although I may not be in the shape to serve my country as a soldier, I knew I could help my fellow brothers and sisters in any way that I could. I choose the VA to serve my community and family!” He said, “Just doing our thing on our normal patrols in Afghanistan 2011. I had the pleasure to serve with so many great soldiers and miss it every day, but being here at the VA lets me be around every era, and it’s a true blessing. I lived my life studying the war and politics so that my daughter may have the ability to study mathematics, and science.” Richard is with his service dog Willie in this photo. The annual service in which around 30 clowns, dressed in full costume, gather to honour the king of the clowns, Joseph Grimaldi (1778-1837). The clowns’ service has been held in London since 1947, originally at St James’s on Pentonville Road, where Grimaldi is buried, until the church was gutted by fire in 1959. Children get to participate in one of the more moving parts of the day, when they carry a candle for each of the clowns who had laughed their last in the past year.

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin and First Lady Joanne Jaeger Tomblin welcomed West Virginians on Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2015, to the annual Joyful Night celebration and tree lighting ceremony. The evening's program also included a salute to West Virginia's military service men and women and our state's first responders.
Joyful Night is free and open to the public. As part of the evening's festivities, the Governor and First Lady encourage those attending to bring a new, unwrapped toy for the U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots campaign. Toys for Tots donation bins will be located in the Capitol Rotunda and will be available in the Governor's Reception Room until December 4.
