Polar Service

Valene's 1956 tour group to Europe prepares to board an SAS DC-6B for the flight from LAX to Copenhagen. SAS pioneered the Polar Route from the West Coast to Europe. Intermediate stops were made in Winnipeg and Greenland. Travelers dressed up for travel in that time!

Front row, fourth and fifth from left, are my aunt and mother, Eleanor Barlow and Martie B. Lisowski. Lucy Smith is fourth from right, front row and Valene L. Smith (tour director) is on the far right.
