Service staff recently joined folks from The Nature Conservancy at a western North Carolina bog to help keep tabs on the rare green pitcher plant. In order to help provide the pitcher plants with the ample sunlight they need, the site is periodically subjected to a prescribed burn and nascent shade trees cleared by hand where necessary.
To evaluate the effectiveness of their management, every two years The Nature Conservancy monitors the rare green pitcher plant that grows on the site.

A view of the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary bus port.
Five years ago only one bus service the 6 (now axed) served this entrance to ARI. Since building the port it is now served by First 3/3A, 14/14A, 16A and Stagecoach 10, 59, 305/25.
Today was the first day of the 16A serving ARI (every 24 mins) having been rerouted away from Berryden although as can be seen from the "Airyhall via Berryden 16A" destination the displays have not yet been updated to reflect the route change.

Washington DC, Sunday October 7, 2013. Closed entrance to the famous Smithsonian castle on the National Mall. This is the seventh day of the government shutdown. On a normal Sunday this time of year DC is packed with tourists but today there are very few. Many of the most popular tourist attractions are closed thanks to the Tea Party gangsters in the US House Of Representatives.
Postscript. On the 16th day of the shutdown the Senate voted 81 to 18 to raise the debt limit and reopen the Federal government. The legislation was then taken up by the House where it passed by a vote of 285 to 144 shortly after 10PM. In the early hours of Thursday, October 17 President Obama signed the bill. Furloughed workers will start returning to work today and Federal facilities will reopen. The shutdown cost our economy tens of billions of dollars, disrupted the lives of hundreds of thousands of workers and deprived many citizens of vital services.
About a year ago, I posted a photo here of me wearing the navy "working white" uniform. That was one of the last times I wore that uniform. That uniform, along with the "working blues", have been replaced by the new year-round "Service Uniform", which I'm wearing in this photo.

The Norfolk Island Lighterage Service operates both here at Cascade Pier and also at Kingston Pier, on the southern side of the island, depending on sea conditions and weather,
The Norfolk Guardian visits Norfolk Island roughly every 3 weeks and as there is no boat harbour on the island transfer of goods from ship to shore is done by use of lighter boats (ex whaling boats) which are then towed to the pier by powerful motor boats.
At times the transfer of goods from the cargo ship, the Norfolk Guardian, which is anchored just offshore, to the pier can indeed be a perilous process both in getting the goods via the lighters to the pier and also because unloading at the pier in heavy swells can be both unpredictable and depending on sea conditions, very hazardous.
Rough sea conditions can cause the lighter boat loads to become unbalanced and many a load has gone overboard, including large vehicles which may need to be transported by lashing 2 lighter boats together. Once the goods arrive at Cascade Pier a crane lifts them onto the pier for distribution around Norfolk Island.
It comes as a surprise to some that Norfolk Island does not have a safe harbour. Unfortunately there are no suitable bays which could have been developed for this purpose. To develop a harbour suitable for vessels the size of the Norfolk Guardian would require a huge financial investment, money that the small community of just over 2000 people on Norfolk Island just cannot afford.

The second of the three Euro 6 DAF CF ROLL-ON/OFF's, (MH64 GBN) comes into the new State-of-the-art Workshop for an inspection. To improve the safety of our ROLL-ON/OFF's once out on site, we are currently in the process of adding rear LED beacons to raise awareness when there in action which will enable better visibility and hazard warning. This is the first Vehicle to receive this new feature with it due to be fitted to all of our six ROLL-ON/OFF's over the course of the next few weeks.
Dedication to service motivated more than 40 students to trade in their first full week of summer vacation to help others. The high schools from across the Diocese of Saginaw are nearing the end of the week-long service camp, Youth Encounter Service (Y.E.S.). Youth and leaders worked on three houses in conjunction with the One Week, One Street urban revitalization effort. Their efforts along Ezra Rust Avenue included painting siding and walls, repairing porches and roofs and replacing windows. Sponsored by the Catholic Diocese of Saginaw, Y.E.S. allows high school students to learn about and fight poverty through the perspective of Catholic social teaching. Participants stayed at St. Stephen Parish Center in Saginaw, where evening activities included guest speakers, prayer and reflection.
