A springtime evening, one of the few nice ones we've had this spring.
I had little time so went out to a spot close to my home...
I was waiting and shooting until a couple of boats came by and stirred the water... the dynamics of the waves made this otherwise static image work for me... how about you?
Cross town cars don't stop here no more. I never posted this shot from the past. This service station has waited a long time to receive another gas shipment. The gas tanker got lost so far from any interstate. It's been a long time since the RR land grant ads avowed how much tilling the plains could attract weather systems and farmers and ranchers flooded to the area. As if the Koch Bros volatile fossils couldn't bleed into our atmosphere and pay us back. When this early service station was in business, The attendant still needed a comfortable arm chair. Now, it seems as though travelers want to jet over this spot entirely. Apparently few cars even pass the old station. Anywhere there was habitation, settlers put extra effort into starting stands of trees.
This proves that the word "plain" can be a double entendre. Plain means plain! Anything that sticks above the sparse grass (including two pines for miles) is interesting out here but that takes beaucoups time and investigation. Mostly, the sky held little to show, other than a good sunburn on that April day in 2006. Summer was still lying in wait for a couple of months back by the mountains. Where will shelter from the elements be found out here then? The ancient Greeks didn't have few enough elements to describe this landscape.
This is on\near the Pawnee National Grasslands beyond Grover in northeast Colorado. Boy, did the railroad land sales brochures in the latter half of the 1800s ever lay this barren soil to eastern hicks. The brochures claimed that plowing this "fertile" land would cause an increase in the normal rainfall. No rain today, could that claim have been optimistic puffery or an outright lie to gain land sales? Was advertising more viable so many years ago? Surely not the Union nor the Denver Pacific's advertising! Perhaps the problem was a hick problem - at least the weeds are making a stand. The buffalo were far better stewards of this land than the hicks ever could be.
