Arriva London South DWS9 emerges rather gingerly from Sylvan road in Upper Norwood on a very quiet Sunday morning, most motorist opting to stay in their warm beds rather than risk the roads around this area.
Most bus routes seemed to be running to good time which is unusual in this very hilly part of South London, normally whenever we have snow around here alot of the services become suspended.

Few folks know this but before he went on to TV fame and stardom, Robot B-9 worked as a roadside mechanic for Clem. Clem hired him on the spot when he saw how the bot just had a way with anything mechanical. Folks would stop by the garage every day just to watch him work his wonders. It’s a little known fact that B-9 had a built in bottle opener on his back that made sipping a cold one all that much easier while you watched.
People came from miles around and that was how he got discovered. One day, a fellow from out of town came by with his engine just a knockin’ like crazy. The robot looks under the hood for a bit and tells the guy, “The gasoline you have been using is crushing, killing, destroying your pistons. You are in danger Mr. Robinson. You are in danger of destroying your engine.”
Well, you know the rest. He still visits now and then. He likes to fish.

Cross town cars don't stop here no more. I never posted this shot from the past. This service station has waited a long time to receive another gas shipment. The gas tanker got lost so far from any interstate. It's been a long time since the RR land grant ads avowed how much tilling the plains could attract weather systems and farmers and ranchers flooded to the area. As if the Koch Bros volatile fossils couldn't bleed into our atmosphere and pay us back. When this early service station was in business, The attendant still needed a comfortable arm chair. Now, it seems as though travelers want to jet over this spot entirely. Apparently few cars even pass the old station. Anywhere there was habitation, settlers put extra effort into starting stands of trees.
This proves that the word "plain" can be a double entendre. Plain means plain! Anything that sticks above the sparse grass (including two pines for miles) is interesting out here but that takes beaucoups time and investigation. Mostly, the sky held little to show, other than a good sunburn on that April day in 2006. Summer was still lying in wait for a couple of months back by the mountains. Where will shelter from the elements be found out here then? The ancient Greeks didn't have few enough elements to describe this landscape.
This is on\near the Pawnee National Grasslands beyond Grover in northeast Colorado. Boy, did the railroad land sales brochures in the latter half of the 1800s ever lay this barren soil to eastern hicks. The brochures claimed that plowing this "fertile" land would cause an increase in the normal rainfall. No rain today, could that claim have been optimistic puffery or an outright lie to gain land sales? Was advertising more viable so many years ago? Surely not the Union nor the Denver Pacific's advertising! Perhaps the problem was a hick problem - at least the weeds are making a stand. The buffalo were far better stewards of this land than the hicks ever could be.
In the savanna, Red-billed Oxpeckers require large wild ungulates (in this case a Kudu) to forage on. They scramble agilely over host mammals gleaning ticks, mites, and other ectoparasites, and occasionally drinking host blood. Photographed in Ruaha, Tanzania.
WDA664T was a Leyland Fleetline FE30AGR / Park Royal H76F new to West Midlands PTE as their 6664 in January 1979. On disposal in October 1990 it passed to A1 Service Member James Brown of Dreghorn and remained in the fleet until the company passed to Stagecoach in January 1995. This was taken on a nice peaceful Sunday morning at South Beach Ardrossan as WDA664T skirted around the coast.

Drawing inspiration from gas stations that have populated the American West, including the Coachella Valley, Saar’s station offers more than practical services; it provides fuel for the soul. She invites weary travelers to get “their blues flushed, spirits inflated, hearts charged, and souls filled.”
Inside the station, a sculptural assemblage handcrafted by Saar contains a collection of devotional objects. Saar has collaborated with Coachella Valley students to create foil repoussé medallions expressing prayers and wishes for healing and hope. These community-crafted elements, combined with furnishings made from salvaged materials, form a sanctuary that merges collective dreams with Saar’s vision of a spiritual oasis. At the center stands a life-size, hand-carved female figure, the guardian and healer of the site, exuding strength and protection.
