This past weekend heralded more productive work on the robot. Here's the front ultrasonic sensor, and associated mounting bracket.
S.S.S. is a trio consisting of Atau Tanaka, Cecile Babiole and Laurent Dailleau, creating a dynamic sound / image performance. S.S.S (Sensors Sonics Sights) performs visual music with sensors and gestures. They create a work of sound and sight, a laptop performance that goes beyond with the intensity of bodies in movement. Going beyond media: music that is more than a soundtrack, images going further than video wallpaper. A three-way conversation modulating sonic and luminous pulse and flow.
Sensors capture gesture and corporeal movement, translating them into digital data. Ultrasound sensors measure the distance between the performer's hands and her machine, allowing her to articulate 3D imagery, navigating in color, scale, texture. The Theremin, historical electronic instrument invented in 1919, an oscillator responds to perturbations of electrostatic fields based on the distance of the hands and body to the instrument. The BioMuse places gel electrodes on the performer's forearms, analyzing EMG biosignals. Muscle tension through concentrated movement allows the musician to sculpt sound synthesis.

My sensor is now cleaner than the day I bought it! I've had some obvious specks in there since I bought it. I went to Precision Camera to see what they could do and it was going to cost a lot of money and 2 days. Um, no thanks, I'll live with the specks! I bought the large Giottos rocket blower. It got rid of all but one of my bigger dust spots. So I blew and blew and blew... and went outside to take a photo. I suddenly had a BIGGER dust speck than ever before and right in the middle! Doh!
Frustrated, I called my friend David McLaughlin who is a professional photographer and runs DCM Photography. He invited me over for some real cleaning! A little Eclipse, a little swipe and I had a sparkling clean sensor! Even the numerous tiny specs disappeared.
With all the warnings on the net about how you can't really ever get your sensor perfectly clean, my expectations had been way too low for too long. A little poof of air does a good job, but a little wet swipe does a great job! I am ready for more SoFoBoMo photos.

MIDAS Series III Infrared Sensor
Aerojet ElectroSystems built the Series III for use in MIDAS (Missile Defense Alarm System) satellites, part of a U.S. Air Force program beginning in the late 1950s to provide early warning of a Soviet missile attack. As with other infrared sensors developed for MIDAS, the Series III was designed to detect and track the hot exhaust gases of missiles at launch and during the boost phase. This data would be relayed to ground stations to give up to a 30-minute warning of an attack.
Placed in orbit by an Atlas-Agena rocket, a Series III in May 1963 became the first space-based sensor to successfully detect a missile launch. Midas was cancelled in the late 1960s, and the more advanced Defense Support Program early warning satellites were launched beginning in 1970.
