An untitled brush script that is coming very soon!

Mural in a viaduct under the B_Line embankment along Hubbard Street in Chicago, Illinois. I'm not a fan of "Street Script" but I do like the El Train motif in the background. Mural by Will Greve aka @KnowTrespassing.

I had this one-page story to do and I usually draw a thumbnail and think just on the key sentences and dialogues. But I realized this one would have so much text that I needed the full text in order to see how much space I'd have left for the art.

So first I wrote all the text for the story. After that, I divided it in small blocks that would end up being the captions and balloons (that column on the left).

Then I started laying them down on the page. At first I wanted to do big panels, some "narrative panels" only with text (just like in Casanova), but I decided it would be best for the story if I did lots of small panels, even if a little art just to make it a real comicbook, you know?

I drew some panels there for guidance and now I'm gonna print this and draw on the remaining space.

I really don't do it like this very often, but sometimes you gotta go with what you get.

I got a letter from 12 year calligraphy phenom Janie Lin. The envelope was done in Spencerian script, and the enclosed letter in perfect cursive. What does not quite come across in this photo is the shiny silver ink she used here!

Can you guess which letter inspired the form of these links?

I finally listed this one of a kind chain in my shop.

The Weinstein Co.'s "The Road” is a trip through time starring Viggo Mortensen, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Robert Duvall and Charlize Theron.

"The Road" Takes Fresh Approach to Post-Apocalyptic Genre: Ever since God flooded out the entire human race in the early pages of Genesis, literature has abounded with stories of the apocalypse. For generation after generation, from The Book of Revelations to The Stand, we have obsessed over the end of the world, how it will come to pass, and what, if anything, we can do to stop it. Now that humankind has reached a point where the End could conceivably happen in an afternoon, our glimpses into this theoretical future are all the more intriguing. And they've never been more important.

The Road, directed by John Hillcoat (The Proposition) and based on the novel by Cormac McCarthy (No Country For Old Men), is a dark, poignant story of a father and son journeying through a post-apocalyptic wasteland, withstanding harsh weather, malnutrition, and under the constant threat of marauders, thieves and cannibals. Their goal is simple: to carry on.

Those looking to sink their teeth into mindless disaster-porn (not that there's anything wrong with that) can get their fix elsewhere. The Road is a smaller, more penetrating film that draws strength from its intimacy and its ability to do so much with so little.

Viggo Mortensen gives an emotional tour de force as the embattled father; look for him on the red carpet come March. I thought Kodi Smit-McPhee was impressive and genuine as the son, and takes on the task of being in literally every scene with rare fearlessness. Charlize Theron, Robert Duvall and Guy Pearce give small but highly memorable performances, Duvall in particular, whose portrayal of a withered old man journeying all alone will haunt you.

I received draft versions of this script in order to work on an aspect of pre-production of the film for The Weinstein Company. My highlight marks are on it exactly as I made them at that time. I have correspondence between me and the director and numerous staff and film personnel to corroborate my fact-checking about the production, update their bios, etc. I was hired to provide a service to the film before there was any footage to be seen. They sent me copies of the Final Shooting script and these were used for me to make notations in order to interview the actors and the producers.

Copies of this script are for sale elsewhere on the web. If any of my Flickr buddies is interested in obtaining one of mine, please contact me: noemedia@pacbell.net

Day 10: Earlier today I was live on the radio for 22 minutes. I was picthing for OPB's membership drive with Casey Negreiff. It was only my second time live on the radio, but I felt great about it. I got a few compliments, too. I was thinking that I ought to take a picture of the stuido I was pitching from so that I could remember the day, but then I forgot. I came home later and set to work on another radio project: a story for Destination DIY. I had an ear edit (where I read my narration and play clips from the story) at 5 p.m. with Julie. I spent a couple of hours working on it but by the time we went over the piece together it was clear that there was still a mountain of work to be done. I still had more tape to gather. I still had to flush out my narration. And I still had to figure out why the story was worth talking about. Julie was kind enough not to say so in as many words, we both knew that it sucked. So you win one (live pitching) and you lose another (produced piece). The lesson of the day is that I can only expect to be good at things I've practiced, and in the world of produced pieces I still have much to learn. I'm realizing now that none of this has much to do with the photograph, which is just a simple capture of what my computer and scripts looked like at 8 p.m. this evening. I suppose this whole project will be much more meaningful if I attempt to record my thoughts and my feelings, too, instead of just what I see. Edits included cooling off and a boost in exposure.

Cuneiform script is one of the earliest known systems of writing, distinguished by its wedge-shaped marks on clay tablets, made by means of a blunt reed for a stylus. The name cuneiform itself simply means "wedge shaped", from the Latin cuneus "wedge" and forma "shape," and came into English usage "probably from Old French cunéiforme."

The original Sumerian script was adapted for the writing of the Akkadian, Eblaite, Elamite, Hittite, Luwian, Hattic, Hurrian, and Urartian languages, and it inspired the Ugaritic and Old Persian alphabets. Cuneiform writing was gradually replaced by the Phoenician alphabet during the Neo-Assyrian Empire. By the 2nd century AD, the script had become extinct, and all knowledge of how to read it was lost until it began to be deciphered in the 19th century.

Today I began work on "Titanic the Movie the Play" with my partners in crime Greg and Dan. Nine hours plus of work and we have a storyboard, which is great. Show is in March at Bris Powerhouse. I used the app Enlight to try tilt shifting on the title.

Taken during Saturday's Make-A-Strip panel with the Penny Arcade guys. Jerry (Tycho) opened it up with typing out the pre-written script on the projected screen of the laptop they were using. The rest of the panel comprised of Mike (Gabe) drawing the actual panels - with frequent comical interruptions, such as when he drew Gabe as a centaur or a Cthuhlu-like monster - and Jerry (and sometimes Mike) answering Q&A questions. Jerry sang, too!
