I love the abstract quality of this one!

Lightning captured with a Canon Powershot SD1100 running the CHDK and a motion detect script.

I am not sure why there's a faint double-image of the lightning bolt - the obvious answer is reflection on the double pane window, except I've taken lots of lightning photos through these windows and not usually gotten that effect.

When I went to bed, there was a prediction of lightning bearing down on us, so I set up this one camera running the motion detect script behind the curtain. I thought about setting up the rest of my cameras but I was really tired and needed to get up early and had only seen some faint sheet lightning so far. Also, when I leave cameras in the windows facing east, I have to either get up at 5am or let them sit in the direct morning sunlight for hours, which I don't think is so great for them, so I often only want to risk it for the old camera I don't care about as much. So, I only set up one camera and went to bed. Then when I woke up in the morning and saw these beautiful clear lightning strikes, I really kicked myself for not staying up a little later to watch the storm and for not setting up the other cameras. I clearly missed a good opportunity. But at least I got a couple photos on this camera.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

While I was walking along the coast near Edinburgh one day last month, I came upon a couple of the bays where there were masses of small boulders which had been churned up by the recent high tides, and dumped along the strand line. I guess the average size was about a foot wide by 8 or 9 inches in height and width, but there was a lot variation. There were all colours and shapes, but they seemed to be mainly sedimentary sandstones and mudstones and some conglomerates. Amongst them were many of these - red sandstone with quartz seams running through them. I don't know what was written on them, but they looked to be saying something, to someone, somewhere.

(A geologist contact tells me the 'hieroglyphs' are most probably calcite, not quartz. Thanks Dwight.)

dont know how i got such a good picture

This week's theme for Mosaic Montage Monday was Script. I was looking for something that said Merry Christmas, but all I got was MC Courtyard! Script is getting harder to find these days. HMMM!

Two LED spotlights, Mitakon Speedmaster at F4; edited in Fujifilm's raw converter and in Luminar. Abstract it is, but clear is that the light increases from right to left, or decreases from left to right. You can read the image from both ends. Just like reading, say, Latin script and Hebrew script.

I had to squeeze in a very tight spot to get this view... I was not even sure if this shot came out or not. After processing, I was bit surprised to see all the hues of red...

They're about to make the turn south down to Hamilton in this photo.

Canadian Pacific Train 253 with the CP 7010 Heritage Locomotive is approaching CPC 191 at Rouses Point where it will stop for a crew change and the Canadian crew will take it the rest of the way to Montreal. Multiple problems plagued this train during the night causing a lengthy delay which allowed for a few daylight photos just south of the border.
