Long ago, in what seems a different life, a young mochilero/backpacker adventurer passed through Colombia. A fellow traveler took my camera and snapped this rare picture with me on the other side of the lens of my Yashica. Tierradentro, by the way, is a fascinating archaeological site where subterranean tombs ladened with treasures and elaborate stone carvings were discovered. I spent 3-4 days at this beautiful location before moving onwards.

Buttressed by a rock outcrop, a small wooded environment is welcome shelter from the elements. The midday dappled light offers some relief from the overhead sun to creatures who shelter here (including hikers like myself).

Tropical trees are often a platform for dozens, perhaps hundreds of plants, insects and other life forms. This tree in the Singapore Botanic Gardens demonstrates that fact very well.
This 1974 image was taken with a Yashica ELECTRO 35CC. The negative was scanned with an HP Scanjet G4050 and restored with multiple Photoshop operations.
Beyond the last trees a grass land opens up with primitive lobelia, groundsel and other exotic plants as we get the first glimpse of the snowy upper peaks.

Some of my first 4x5 tests using my old Polaroid Model 150 Roll Film Camera. Loaded one sheet of Kodak Royal-X Pan 4166 (expired 6/1986). I shot it at about ISO 200 which seems a bit under exposed.
Unfortunately I misjudged the amount of liquid needed in my Fink-Roselieve cut-film-pack developing tank, so the old Caffenol Concoction I used didn't quite reach the top, and the top 1/4 of each sheet (left side) wasn't quite developed. But I'm still pleased with the results, considering the developer had already been used once over one month ago... I lucked into a ton of old sheet film so there's plenty more experimenting to come...

Inhabiting the rocky East African Montane Moorland heights of Mt Kenya, this rodent-like creature is actually related to the elephant. Forever vigilant against eagles and other enemies, this friendly hyrax (Heterohyrax brucei) let it's guard down for a moment to pose for me (or perhaps beg for a handout?).

One of the Caribbean's largest coral reefs, Tobago Keys is second only in size to the reefs off Belize. The shades of blue and green of the water is surpassed only by the unbelievable tropical array of life below the surface.

This common landmark resides in three of the remaining japantowns in San Francisco, San Jose, and Los Angeles. It pays tribute to the contributions of Californians of Japanese ancestry and is dedicated to Japantowns that today exist only in memories.
The pictured side features a poem by Janice Mirikitani:
Footsteps lead to destiny
We dance honoring ancestors
who claim our home,
and freedom to pursue our dreams.
Our voices carve a path for justice: Equal rights for all.
We prevail.
Our future harvested from generations.
From my life
opens countless lives.
The Journey continues...

The architecture of San Francisco is quite varied, from the modern skyscrapers to the vintage wooden Victorians of the 1800s. I have always been impressed with the detail and style of the Victorian houses. Their preservation is a point of pride for many San Franciscans.

It is a pleasant day to be outside--for all the creatures of the world.
This photo was taken on a mild and beautiful midwinter day in the hills just north of San Rafael, California. A fire road just off Blackstone Drive accesses Pacheco Valley Preserve above the small development of Marinwood. The fire road and trails meander through mixed oak and bay forest broken by grassland. There are some nearby stables where these content horses lived. They began to anticipate my frequent hikes through their small territory, perhaps because I always brought a couple of carrots for them.
If I was more adventurous I could connect to the Big Rock Ridge Fire Road and climb to over 1,400 feet altitude with spectacular views, overlooking Lucas Valley Preserve and much of the North San Francisco Bay.

Part one of a request I received to compare scans of old negatives with scans of prints produced from said negatives. See part two here: www.flickr.com/photos/itendswithtens/4255424821/
HP Scanjet 4400c at 600dpi, no sharpening or grain reduction, color untouched (yes, the print looks as red as this does). Scanned to uncompressed TIFF through Silverfast, then compressed to JPEG with RIOT optimization plugin for Irfanview, quality at 100% with 4:4:4 chroma sampling.
This is about as detailed as this scanner can produce with prints, going up to 1200 (the claimed optical resolution of the scanner) takes forever and just makes a big, blurry mess. As if this mess isn't big and blurry enough. A relatively clean image, thanks to storage in a plastic sleeve inside a photo album, but with such low detail I'd much rather scan the negative.
Featured are the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, as seen by either my mom or dad some time before I was born, likely mid to late 1982.
The Chac-Mool was a sacred platform where human sacrifice was performed. A priest excised the victim's beating heart in a ritualized blood ceremony.

I visited Singapore long ago. During my 10 day stay I explored this fascinating city-state and was very impressed with the culture, infrastructure and standard of living (particularly compared to neighboring countries). The Zoological and Botanical Gardens were very well constructed and beautifully maintained.
