Deep in the lowest level of the ancient ruins of Chavín is a stela-like "Lanzon" with a jaguar motif etched on it's surface. The jaguar was this culture's sacred idol and the location of this lanzon was the most sacred of all spots in Chavín.

Tirta Gangga literally means water from the Ganges and it is a site of some reverance for the Hindu Balinese. Strictly, the name refers to the water palace built here in 1946 by the King of Karangasem. It is, though, widely used to refer to the general area which includes the water palace and some particularly stunning rural areas around.

Yacht Keramos sailed up the Rio Pará/Amazonas to Belém do Pará. We passed the Ilha do Marajó. The tropical forest in this equatorial zone is an impenetrable wall of green against the river shoreline - and the midday heat was intensely equatorial.

Other burl-like growths can form on redwood trees. These growths are normally scar tissue, formed as a redwood regenerates its protective bark following injury, such as fires, cuts, or breaks. The healing scars will not sprout and do not contain the telltale buds that mark the bottom of a true burl.

For as long as I can remember Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley, California has been one of the last refuges for people who grew up in the sixties (and still have a foot in that era).

There are trails leading around the entire Mulanje massif connecting the simple mountain huts which trekkers can shelter in. As I hiked towards Madzeka Hut I looked back towards Sapitwa Peak, 3,002 meters dominating the background.

Teotihuacán is a popular destination near Mexico City. Since the dawn of history this was a center of temples and pyramids. The Aztec Empire held ceremonies at the site consisting of bloody human sacrifice. As a visitor I can not fail to consider the tens of thousands of people of many cultures who walked this path over several thousand years to the present.
