I came across members of the Bloco Afro Axé Terê Babá during Carnival 1983. They were delighted to entertain an American.

I was in Rio de Janeiro for the 1983 Carnival. Every neighborhood has it's own bloco. Some blocos are very sophisticated while others appear more spontaneous. They all have one thing in common: They have fun!

This common landmark resides in three of the remaining japantowns in San Francisco, San Jose, and Los Angeles. It pays tribute to the contributions of Californians of Japanese ancestry and is dedicated to Japantowns that today exist only in memories.

The pictured side features a poem by Janice Mirikitani:

Footsteps lead to destiny

We dance honoring ancestors

who claim our home,

and freedom to pursue our dreams.

Our voices carve a path for justice: Equal rights for all.

We prevail.

Our future harvested from generations.

From my life

opens countless lives.

The Journey continues...

The architecture of San Francisco is quite varied, from the modern skyscrapers to the vintage wooden Victorians of the 1800s. I have always been impressed with the detail and style of the Victorian houses. Their preservation is a point of pride for many San Franciscans.

It is a pleasant day to be outside--for all the creatures of the world.

This photo was taken on a mild and beautiful midwinter day in the hills just north of San Rafael, California. A fire road just off Blackstone Drive accesses Pacheco Valley Preserve above the small development of Marinwood. The fire road and trails meander through mixed oak and bay forest broken by grassland. There are some nearby stables where these content horses lived. They began to anticipate my frequent hikes through their small territory, perhaps because I always brought a couple of carrots for them.

If I was more adventurous I could connect to the Big Rock Ridge Fire Road and climb to over 1,400 feet altitude with spectacular views, overlooking Lucas Valley Preserve and much of the North San Francisco Bay.

Singapore did not look back after gaining independence. It is modern, orderly and clean. Certainly much has changed in the skyline since this picture was taken 37 years ago.

Part one of a request I received to compare scans of old negatives with scans of prints produced from said negatives. See part two here: www.flickr.com/photos/itendswithtens/4255424821/

HP Scanjet 4400c at 600dpi, no sharpening or grain reduction, color untouched (yes, the print looks as red as this does). Scanned to uncompressed TIFF through Silverfast, then compressed to JPEG with RIOT optimization plugin for Irfanview, quality at 100% with 4:4:4 chroma sampling.

This is about as detailed as this scanner can produce with prints, going up to 1200 (the claimed optical resolution of the scanner) takes forever and just makes a big, blurry mess. As if this mess isn't big and blurry enough. A relatively clean image, thanks to storage in a plastic sleeve inside a photo album, but with such low detail I'd much rather scan the negative.

Featured are the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, as seen by either my mom or dad some time before I was born, likely mid to late 1982.

Money of the World

I have started a new project, will be uploading images of mostly old currency out of circulation.

I visited Singapore long ago. During my 10 day stay I explored this fascinating city-state and was very impressed with the culture, infrastructure and standard of living (particularly compared to neighboring countries). The Zoological and Botanical Gardens were very well constructed and beautifully maintained.

While the redwood forest can be easily harmed by human and natural events, the coast redwood’s (Sequoia sempervirens) ability to resprout from burls lends a sense of timelessness to individual trees.

Hoover Tower is a 285 feet (87 m) structure on the campus of Stanford University in Stanford, California. The tower is part of the Hoover Institution, a research center founded by then-future U.S. president Herbert Hoover. Hoover Tower, inspired by the cathedral tower at Salamanca, was finished in 1941, the year of Stanford's 50th anniversary. It was designed by architect Arthur Brown, Jr.

If you are old enough you might remember that even small towns had street car systems. Most of those systems were discontinued in favor of buses in the late 1950s and early 1960s. San Francisco did not follow the trend. In recent years the city has adopted cars from systems around the country and some international cities. Lovingly restored, they are merrily transporting passengers.

This is an example of the President's Conference Committee (PCC) streetcar that was designed in 1935. These street cars were meant to modernize the look of the streetcar.

Often referred to as one of America's last hometowns, Pacific Grove is known for its Victorian homes, Asilomar State Beach, its artistic legacy and the annual migration of the Monarch butterflies. The city is endowed with more Victorian houses per capita than anywhere else in America

The remains of the Chimú civilization can be seen at the Chan Chan site near Trujillo, Peru. This city prospered in one of the driest deserts in the world. Water from the Andes was brought to the city by a sophisticated subterranean aqueduct. Although it only rains once every few years the mud structures, including the pictured pyramid, have eroded away in the centuries since the city was abandoned.

In a beautiful valley at the base of the Andes, just east of Lago Maihue and Lago Ranco, a Dutch immigrant dairy farmer lived with his family. I stayed on the farm for a few days on several occasions.

Richard Bartlesman van Elikenhuisen had a name that most Chileans could not pronounce but he was highly respected and known in nearby Valdivia.

My gift from my employer (well most of it) for 10 years service. A Samsung 2343BW. 2048x1152, fully adjustable stand including pivot to portrait (handy for working on portrait pics in Photoshop - if a little strange at first!). A definite improvement on my old 17" LG CRT monitor.

For those of you who know me from work... see, I can have a tidy desk if I want!
