Huntington Falls was inspired by a visit John McLaren made to the Sierras with naturalist John Muir. The sculpted rocks around the falls look a little theme park-ish, but it's no less scenic when you're climbing the adjacent stairs.

Great Zimbabwe is a ruined city that was once the capital of the Kingdom of Zimbabwe, which existed from 1100 to 1450 AD during the country’s Late Iron Age. The monument, which first began to be constructed in the 11th century and which continued to be built until the 14th century, spanned an area of 722 hectares (1,784 acres) and at its peak could have housed up to 18,000 people. Great Zimbabwe acted as a royal palace for the Zimbabwean monarch and would have been used as the seat of their political power. (Source: Wikipedia)

The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá is an underground Roman Catholic church built within the tunnels of a salt mine 200 meters underground in a Halite mountain near the town of Zipaquirá, in Cundinamarca, Colombia. It is a very popular tourist destination and place of pilgrimage in the country. The name "Salt Cathedral" is mostly to attract tourists - while a functioning church that receives as many as 3,000 visitors on Sundays, it has no bishop and therefore no official status as a cathedral in Catholicism. My friend and I spent several days in 1976 at a beautiful small island called Isla Cui Cui, a short distance off the shoreline of Lago Puyehue. The family that lived on the island would host visitors who would stay in their simple lodge. I was told that when the 108 year old owner, who had lived much of his life here, died, the Termas Puyehue Hotel bought the island and such visits ended.

I recently brought some clients to UCSC for a meeting. I had an opportunity to wander around the campus a bit with my camera. By the way, the campus sports mascot is the Banana Slug. It is perhaps not the most intimidating symbol but represents the environmentalist attitude, famous in this part of the world.

From the slopes of Mt. Longonot is a view of the Lake Naivasha Basin, a feature of the Great Rift Valley of Kenya. Below is a lava field from an eruption in the 1860's. This image came long before the creation of Mt. Logonot National Park. Our small party thought the 2776m mountain looked to be an interesting ascent. We were able to access the area on a cross country track by a 4-wheel drive Land Rover to an area at the mountain's base called Hell's Gate and the rest of the way by foot.
