The Pacific-Union Club is a private social club located at 1000 California Street in San Francisco, California, at the top of Nob Hill. It was founded in 1889 as a merger of two earlier clubs: the Pacific Club (founded 1852) and the Union Club (founded 1854).

The clubhouse was built as the home for the silver magnate James Clair Flood. The former Flood Mansion is located in the Nob Hill neighborhood. It was designed by Willis Polk. It is considered the first brownstone constructed west of the Mississippi River. Along with the Fairmont Hotel across the street, these were the only structures in the area to survive the San Francisco earthquake and fire of 1906.

This club figured prominently in the history of the west coast of the United States. Many prominent citizens have been active among its membership. To this day, the club's membership remains all male per its charter.

In the southern area of the Great Rift Valley on the Malawi border with Moçambique is the highest area in southern Africa. It is actual an enormous (25km diameter) granite massif with a dozen peaks, the highest reaching approximately 3,000m+ (Sapitwa Peak shown in the background). There are a series of huts where camping is allowed--all food must be packed in by foot. This view from the southeast quadrant of the mountain was accessed from a trail leading from Madzeka Hut.

When on top of this volcanic massif every direction of the compass presents a spectacular view.

Long ago I spent 10 days in Singapore. It was so refreshing to spend time in a clean and modern city where there seemed to be very minimal poverty as I recovered from the rigors of travels in other Asian countries. The heights overlooking the Tierradentro village contain a dark secret. Away from the eyes of the general public are numerous tomb sites that have been pilfered and violated, robbed of their treasures. To get here a strenuous vertical climb of 800 meters is required. Every few minutes walking along the ridge trail brings one to an illegal excavation.

If you are old enough you might remember that even small towns had street car systems. Most of those systems were discontinued in favor of buses in the late 1950s and early 1960s. San Francisco did not follow the trend. In recent years the city has adopted cars from systems around the country and some international cities. Lovingly restored, they are merrily transporting passengers.

A series of eruptions of Mount Agung in 1963, which killed approximately 1,700 people also threatened Puru Besakih. The lava flows missed the temple complex by mere meters. The saving of the temple is regarded by the Balinese people as miraculous, and a signal from the gods that they wished to demonstrate their power but not destroy the monument the Balinese faithful had erected.

Great Zimbabwe is a ruined city that was once the capital of the Kingdom of Zimbabwe, which existed from 1100 to 1450 AD during the country’s Late Iron Age. The monument, which first began to be constructed in the 11th century and which continued to be built until the 14th century, spanned an area of 722 hectares (1,784 acres) and at its peak could have housed up to 18,000 people. Great Zimbabwe acted as a royal palace for the Zimbabwean monarch and would have been used as the seat of their political power. (Source: Wikipedia)
