Yosemite Valley is the first destination for most visitors to Yosemite National Park. There are countless hiking trails overlooked by majestic cliffs of granite.

Nkhata Bay is a port town on the northwestern shore of Lake Malawi, a long and deep Great Rift lake. It is a friendly place with sandy beaches in a beautiful tropical paradise.

A twenty minute walk south of town brought one to this gorgeous tropical beach surrounded by dense forest. Nkhata Bay had everything one needed to recover from the rigors of interior African overland travel--an beautiful lake with gorgeous beaches, friendly people, healthy food, drink and smoke and a fresh highland tropical climate.

The HP Scanjet has been moved beside my desk next to the audio gear. Not only is this more convenient, the rearrangement allows consolidation of all of my network equipment to the media table, including the hub and Wireless Access Point on the top, the household router and DSL modem on the shelf below the scanner. Pride of place is shared between the H-P MediaSmart Server (\\WHS) that is backing up all of the system and the separate battery backup unit that's dedicated to WHS and the network units. Now that there is consistent, automatic backup, I must become accustomed to keeping my shared data on the server rather than the other computers. The development web server will be migrated to WHS also.

The remains of the Chimú civilization can be seen at the Chan Chan site near Trujillo, Peru. This city prospered in one of the driest deserts in the world. Water from the Andes was brought to the city by a sophisticated subterranean aqueduct. Although it only rains once every few years the mud walls have eroded away in the centuries since the city was abandoned. This wall relief was preserved and restored. Originally the designs would have been colorfully painted, as well.

Traveling overland in Sumatra is difficult but the rugged countryside is stunningly beautiful. Sumatra, like Java, has a series of volcanoes (Gunungs) along the length of the island.

As beautiful as is this equatorial volcanic highland, I also remember the soreness from the marathon bus journey from Padang to Parapat and Lake Toba over terrible roads.

I arrived by train to Surabaya on a journey across Java long ago. I was befriended by some local youths who showed me around their city, including some parts of the city rarely seen by foreigners. Surabaya is the Javan city where most overland backpackers, like myself, transited to or from Bali by ferry.

Chugging through the Sudd, the world's biggest swamp and a feature of the White Nile of southern Sudan, we pass a northbound river transport. Like our southbound boat, it is an ancient "mother craft" with several over-ladenned barges lashed to it's sides. The excitement soon passes and we settle back into the lethargy brought on by monotony and 45ºC temperatures. There was certainly no turning back at this stage!

The Battle of Boyacá in Colombia, then known as New Granada, was the battle in which Colombia acquired its definitive independence from Spanish Monarchy, although fighting with royalist forces would continue for years.

Brigadier Generals Francisco de Paula Santander and José Antonio Anzoátegui led a combined republican army of Colombians and Venezuelans, complemented by the British Legion, to defeat in two hours a Royalist Colombian-Venezuelan forces led by Spanish Colonels José María Barreiro and Francisco Jiménez.

Simón Bolívar credited the victory to the British Legion declaring that "those soldier liberators are the men who deserve these laurels" when offered laurels after the victory.

The battle occurred 150 km from Bogotá in the Andes Mountains, in a place known as Casa de Teja, close to a bridge over the Teatinos River and 3 roads heading to Samaca, Motavita and Tunja, an area which is now part of the Boyacá Department. (Source: Wikipedia)

Sausalito is well-known for its houseboat communities along the extensive waterfront of this quaint town. The community living in these unique homes is diverse and includes bohemians, artists and nonconformists. My two sons once wanted the family to move into one of these floating structures--their rationale?--there was no lawn to be mowed (their weekly chore). This seemed to be a perfectly good reason for a 10-year old.

San Francisco has long suffered from a crisis. Since there is rarely space for a front yard in this compact city there are, regrettably, very few pink flamingos on display. Here, in this victorian house, the residents have improvised to maintain an American tradition.

Ruby Newman was commissioned by the San Francisco Art Commission and Recreation and Parks Department to oversee the 1977-1984 restoration of the decorative aspects of this 1914 carrousel. There are 62 menagerie animals and 4 chariots. The Decorative Housing which included: 54 pictorial panels and 18 carved masks were also lovely restored. She designed the color palette and hand painted the entire carrousel. These pieces were in an extremely depressed state with signs of major dry rot and worn surfaces throughout.

I have joined with a tiny community of international overland travelers on an 8-day river journey up the White Nile from Kosti to Juba, Sudan. We have occupied a small bulkhead in deck class within a larger group of Sudanese travelers. They look at us with amazement and curiosity--certainly we were out of place! The fourth member of our adventurous group, Nol, recorded this memorable moment in time.

Yosemite Valley is boxed in by stupendous granite cliffs carved by glaciers. Trails lead around the valley and into the high country of the Sierra Nevada mountains. The national park preserves some of the most spectacular nature areas of North America.

As I took this shot some jardineros who maintain this garden curiously looked at me, dressed in my chauffeur's work uniform (a black suit and tie) taking pictures with a 55 year-old twin lens waist-view camera. "Gringos, que estraño!", no doubt, they were thinking!

As a prank I uttered, just audible enough for them to hear, "¿Cuándo es el mejor momento de cosechar la piña de este maguey para mi mezcal producción?"

Out of the corner of my eye I noticed their eyes widen with surprise, perhaps shock.

The only transport of goods and passengers along the White Nile in southern Sudan is by boat. The entire village assembles as the weekly river transport makes a brief stop.

This bronze statue located at Mission San Rafael Arcangel depicts Junípero Serra (November 24, 1713 – August 28, 1784), known as Fra Juníper Serra in Catalan, his mother tongue. He was a Majorcan Franciscan friar who founded the mission chain in Alta California of the Las Californias Province in New Spain—present day California, United States. Fr. Serra was beatified by Pope John Paul II on September 25, 1988. Source: Wikipedia
