Royal Laotian Airways consisted of several DC3 aircraft. They were old even when this 1974 photo was shot. I had the opportunity to fly from Vientiane into the Royal Lao capital, Luang Prabang, during an uneasy truce between the Pathet Lao and Royalist forces. Many travelers would cross over to Vientiane in order to return to Thailand for a renewed 15 day visa. I thought that the $25 flight to Luang Prabang sounded interesting. Flying was kind of sacrilegious for an overland traveler. In this case I made the exception without guilt.

Wat Jedee Luang or Wat Chedi Luang is a Buddhist temple in the historic center of Chiang Mai, Thailand which dates back to the 14th century. In the early 1990s (18 years after this photo was taken) the chedi was reconstructed, financed by UNESCO and the Japanese government, changing it's appearance dramatically.

The steep roofs of the Batak houses are characteristic of the Christian culture of north central Sumatra. This house is located in Tuk Tuk, a common destination on the island of Samosir in Lake Toba and was available for a few rupiahs a day. It was a delightful place to stay for a week to rejuvenate oneself after the hardships of overland travel in this part of the world. An ever-changing community of adventure travel backpackers passes through here.

Luang Prabang, a World Heritage Site and the former Royal Laotian capital, is situated in a breathtaking mountainous setting. Only the most adventurous traveler visited Luang Prabang during this sensitive time. Within weeks the truce between Royalist forces and the Pathet Lao was broken as the American supported government fell.

Lake Toba is a relatively difficult overland journey but worth the hardship. It is an equatorial volcanic highland crater lake with an enormous central island, Samosir. The tropical climate is moderated by the altitude and the terrain is rugged and beautiful.
This ideal location was a significant stop on the route taken by adventurous overland trekkers as they made their way towards Thailand and India with Europe as the ultimate destination (or in reverse to Australia). The beauty and tranquility of this location warranted at least a week or ten days for rest and rejuvenation before continuing on the trail.

The Mark Hopkins San Francisco is a luxury hotel located at the top of Nob Hill in San Francisco, California, opened in 1926.
Mark Hopkins, one of the founders of the Central Pacific Railroad, chose the southeastern peak of Nob Hill as the site for a dream home for his wife, Mary. The Mark Hopkins mansion survived the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, however, it was destroyed in the three-day fire that followed the earthquake and is now the site of the present day hotel.
