The Zomba Plateau is a Great Rift Valley volcanic massif in Malawi that is a forestry reserve. It is a camping, hiking and trout fishing paradise not too far from Lilongwe.

Blackie was a swaybacked horse who, for twenty-eight years, was a well-known fixture in Tiburon, California. He not only stood in the same spot in a pasture at the corner of Tiburon Boulevard and Trestle Glen Road, rarely moving, day after day, but he faced in the same direction, becoming the local mascot of several generations.

The indoor market in Chiang Mai was fascinating. Food and dinning were on the ground floor with clothing and commodities sold on the upper floors. The sounds and smells created a unique atmosphere, new to me.

Overland travel options are few and conditions very tough when faced with traveling south from Khartoum. There is a two week train journey or a 8-10 day river trip starting from the port city of Kosti. I have joined with a tiny community of international overland travelers on the difficult river journey up the White Nile from Kosti to Juba, Sudan. We have occupied a small bulkhead in deck class within a larger group of Sudanese travelers. I have a hammock which I hang between two posts. The Sudanese have never seen such a contraption before. A parade of locals stare in disbelief at me as I sway in the suffocating heat of midday.

Gunung Kawi is an 11th century temple complex in Tampaksiring north east of Ubud in Bali, Indonesia. The candis of Gunung Kawi are believed to be constructed in the 11th century (1080 AD) by king Anak Wungsu in honor of his father, the great Balinese ruler Udayana.

The term candi refers to the abode of Candika, Goddess of Death, and consort of Lord Siva. The rock-hewn candis are a wholly Balinese phenomenon, unknown elsewhere in the world.

In the early 1970s a common way to extend a visitor 15 day visa was to travel to Laos, crossing the Mekong River by small ferry and returning to Thailand a few days later. There was an uneasy truce between the Pathet Lao and Royalist forces and the country was still open to visitors.

Nkhata Bay is a port town on the northwestern shore of Lake Malawi, a long and deep Great Rift lake. It is a friendly place with sandy beaches in a beautiful tropical paradise. A tiny international backpacker community passed through this place in this 1970s. Nearly a month went by before I moved on.

Overland travel in Sumatra is difficult at the best of times. It is, therefore, necessary to find a tropical haven for rest and recovery. Lake Toba fits that description perfectly. In the northwest shores of Lake Malawi, an extremely long (580km) and deep (up to 700m+) Great Rift Valley lake, is the beautiful and tranquil village of Nkhata Bay. I spent 3 weeks losing myself in time and space at the Hotel Heart, a charming, albeit extraordinarily simple establishment which allowed me to pitch my tent on their grounds for about US$0.25/day.

A few overland travelers passed through this isolated Great Rift lakeside town in the 1970s, having heard about it by word-of-mouth. For those adventurous voyagers seeking unspoiled tropical paradises in out-of-the-way places, this was a true find.

The tropical azure waters of the Great Rift Valley Lake Malawi are a sight to behold. Below the surface are over 300 species of colorful tropical fish. White fishing eagles and kingfishers patrol the shores and an occasional grunt of the hippo drifts over the vast waterway.
