San Francisco has long suffered from a crisis. Since there is rarely space for a front yard in this compact city there are, regrettably, very few pink flamingos on display. Here, in this victorian house, the residents have improvised to maintain an American tradition.

There are 62 menagerie animals and 4 chariots. The Decorative Housing which included: 54 pictorial panels and 18 carved masks were also lovely restored. She designed the color palette and hand painted the entire carrousel. These pieces were in an extremely depressed state with signs of major dry rot and worn surfaces throughout.

I have joined with a tiny community of international overland travelers on an 8-day river journey up the White Nile from Kosti to Juba, Sudan. We have occupied a small bulkhead in deck class within a larger group of Sudanese travelers. They look at us with amazement and curiosity--certainly we were out of place! The fourth member of our adventurous group, Nol, recorded this memorable moment in time.

As I took this shot some jardineros who maintain this garden curiously looked at me, dressed in my chauffeur's work uniform (a black suit and tie) taking pictures with a 55 year-old twin lens waist-view camera. "Gringos, que estraño!", no doubt, they were thinking!
As a prank I uttered, just audible enough for them to hear, "¿Cuándo es el mejor momento de cosechar la piña de este maguey para mi mezcal producción?"
Out of the corner of my eye I noticed their eyes widen with surprise, perhaps shock.

Argüello was born in Yerba Buena (present day San Francisco), Alta California, to José DarÃo Argüello and Maria Ygnacia Moraga, members of one of the most distinguished and influential families in early California history. His father founded the Pueblo de Los Angeles, and served as Governor of Alta California and later of Baja California.
In August, 1806, Argüello succeeded his father as Commandant of California with the rank of lieutenant. In 1821, he launched an exploration of Northern California to investigate the rumors of "Foreigners" setting up a base. This expedition has come to be popularly known as The Last Spanish Expedition in California. Argüello published his expedition diary, titled The Diary of Captain Arguello: The Last Spanish Expedition in California, October 17 - November 17, 1821.
His brother was Santiago Argüello, who was commandant of the Presidio of San Diego and alcalde (mayor) of Pueblo de San Diego.
The grave of LuÃs Antonio Argüello is at Mission San Francisco de AsÃs (Mission Dolores) cemetery, San Francisco.
Argüello and his second wife Maria Soledad Ortega de Argüello inherited his parents 35,240-acre (142.6 km2) Spanish land grant of 1795 named Rancho de las Pulgas, encompassing present day San Mateo, Belmont, San Carlos, Redwood City, Atherton, and Menlo Park. Though Luis never actually lived there, his widow and children settled there after his death.
Luis Antonio Argüello died in Yerba Buena (San Francisco) in 1830, and is buried at the Mission San Francisco de AsÃs (Mission Dolores) cemetery.

Agua Azul is a spectacular site in the mountains of Chiapas, not far from the famous ruins of Palenque. The river runs through a dense rain forest teeming with wildlife and cuts through limestone, which gives it a vivd blue color. A 100m zone on either side of the river is cooled by the flowing river, giving much-needed relief from the tepid tropical heat.

Blackie was a swaybacked horse who, for twenty-eight years, was a well-known fixture in Tiburon, California.
