The Mark Hopkins San Francisco is a luxury hotel located at the top of Nob Hill in San Francisco, California, opened in 1926.

Mark Hopkins, one of the founders of the Central Pacific Railroad, chose the southeastern peak of Nob Hill as the site for a dream home for his wife, Mary. The Mark Hopkins mansion survived the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, however, it was destroyed in the three-day fire that followed the earthquake and is now the site of the present day hotel.

Happy Christmas from the Agnew family!

Found a box of negatives (including both 120 and 135) and as I began scanning them I was shocked finding these pictures of my parents and his friends during the time they were dating.

After spending almost two weeks on the massive mountain I descended to the valley and found myself in a large tea plantation. The surprised Dutch expatriate plantation manager adopted me for a week or so in my recovery from the rigors of my alpine adventures. Having a hot bath was the nearest thing to paradise that I had experienced in quite a while!

Rodin's Thinker is perhaps his best known monumental work, first conceived circa 1880–1881 as a depiction of poet Dante. The image evolved until it no longer represented Dante, but all poets or creators.

Bronze casts of the large Thinker were not made by Rodin himself, but by a professional reducteur, Henri Lebosse, under the artist's supervision. The first large bronze (University of Louisville) was cast by A. A. Hebrard in 1904 for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in Saint Louis, but was rejected by the artist. Rodin turned principally to the founder Alexis Rudier for subsequent casts, and the Legion's example is one of several commissioned during Rodin's lifetime. Mrs. Alma de Bretteville Spreckels purchased it through their mutual friend, Loie Fuller. The Thinker is one of the earliest acquisitions of the more than seventy Rodin sculptures that Mrs. Spreckels purchased and later donated to the Legion of Honor. Source: Wikipedia

Padang was my first stop in Sumatra, arriving by Pelni Line ship from Java. Later, on route towards Toba I made a brief stop to change buses and took this photo. Traveling overland in Sumatra had it's challenges as I boarded a tiny bus bound for Toba Lake (a 14 hour trip over terrible roads).

Many an overland traveler such as myself arrived at this port city via Pelni Lines passenger freighter (deck class) from Jakarta.

Want to travel south, up the Nile? The choices are a short flight, an excruciating 10 day train and bus journey or a boat which can take 7-10 days, Kosti to Juba. By boat, I mean an old steam paddle craft with several barges lashed to it's side. That sounded fine to me!

I joined a small group of like-minded overland travelers and purchased a deck class ticket. We scoured the village and bought supplies to cook en route. We were set for the journey.

Anyone who visits Bali today will find Kuta overrun by tourists and vendors, The entire shoreline is a mass of hotels, nightclubs and souvenir shops. It almost seems to be an Australian Balinese theme park. When this image was captured some 37 years ago it was quite a different world--peaceful, serene and tropical. It was the first and last stop on the Australia to London overland trek, a common journey for young adventurers of the day.

Some people would call this eerie manifestation a burl growth, common to the coastal redwoods of California.

I was not so certain - - it appeared to be that legendary and mythical creature which is said to emerge from ancient sequoias seeking revenge upon the humans that have desecrated these pristine stands of old growth redwoods.

Wait, did you hear that low pitched groan?? - - - or was that the wind moving the trunks and branches back and forth??

I had better take this photo and retreat!

The Russian River empties into the Pacific Ocean on the Sonoma coastline. Typically the winter flow is strong and creates a wide breach through the sand beach dam. This year has been extraordinarily dry with the water flow barely breaking through to the ocean.
