A minor crossing of the Mekong River from Laos to Thailand in the Golden Triangle. I flew Royal Laotian Airways (consisting of a single DC3 aircraft) into Ban Hat Tai from Luang Prabang. Travelers continued into Thailand crossing the Mekong River by small wooden boats and then bus to the nearest major town, Chiang Rai. It was a grand adventure.

I took four shots at the last meetup. This is the last one I took and the first I am posting.
It is always a challenge lining up the camera for a wide angle shot like this. Doing it in the dark, through a lens with maximum aperture of f8 on the ground glass with a black pickup is just a little more challenging than normal, however.

During the last year of the war of liberation Troutbeck Inn in Nyanga was virtually deserted. This was Cecil Rhodes favorite place in the country named after him. Soon after this photo was shot there were dramatic changes in the new country of Zimbabwe. The beauty of this countryside will always remain, however.

-A chance meeting with some local boys (a spear toting adult was watching attentively nearby). I was on an over-ladened truck driven by an Arab trader accompanied by a small group of fellow foreigners, enduring a five day, grueling cross-country journey through wild country from Juba, Sudan to Lake Turkana, Kenya. We were digging the truck out of a sand spit where it had been stuck when the local boys came over from seemingly nowhere to look us over.

Want to travel south, up the Nile? The choices are a short flight, an excruciating 10-day train and bus journey or a boat which can take 7-10 days, Kosti to Juba. By boat, I mean an old steam paddle craft with several barges lashed to it's side. That sounded fine to me, a dedicated overland traveler!

frame #11 Synagoga at Trier Cathedral in Germany.
Synagoga is a historical representation of the Jews refusing to accept Jesus as their Messiah. Often portrayed as a blindfolded young woman with her crown falling from her head, a broken staff, and tablets from the Torah slipping out of her hand, she is found in Christian imagery as far back as the 9th century and (along with her counterpart Ecclesia) adorns several other cathedrals including Notre Dame in Paris.

The Rhodesian National Tourist Board produced a series of maps for motorists printed in 1976. These documents are archives of a country which, although no longer exists, still remains in the memory of many around the world who once lived in this beautiful country.

I can now confess that on the night of the full moon I joined a small group of mochileros and entered the ruins. We spent the night in the Grand Plaza in the upper chambers of the pyramids. As dawn broke there was a gradual crescendo of bird calls. The vantage point gave a view of Tikal rising above the canopy of the thick forest and was an extraordinary experience.

Across the narrow bay from the town of Golfito was a backpacker (mochilero) destination run by an old American expatriate amputee, simply referred to as Captain Tom. He lived with a pretty young Costarican woman and their baby in this colorful trailer. "The office" was surrounded by a haphazard group of buildings and cottages situated in a tropical forest that this area is so well known for.
The area was also known for it's magic mushrooms--thus the constantly arriving mochilero population.
The community had an honor system. Rent was $1.00 a day and when travelers departed they shoved an envelope under the door of the trailer.

When my girlfriend and I went to NYC, I brought along my trusty Vivitar PN2011 and some rolls of expired film I found heading for the dumpster at the newspaper where I work. I'm quite impressed with how the film turned out, since I had no clue when it had expired.
I met up with my friend Chaz Kangas, who took us on a tour of Harlem, where I snapped this shot of the famous Apollo Theater. I love the expression of the dude at the bottom of the frame.
